    God, how I wish Jim was here to see how his labor of love turned into one of the greatest cult classics of all time. He was devastated when it did so poorly in theaters. If he only knew what was to come. My favorite movie of all time! RIP Jim & David 💗😭

      Don't worry, his wife Jane said that he lived long enough to see how the cult adoration was growing before he died. Not as much as it is today but it did begin quite early after release.

      Yes ! IMDB "Michael Jackson, Prince, and Mick Jagger were considered to play Goblin King Jareth. Jim Henson preferred Sting, until his kids convinced him that David Bowie (who had reached his peak of mainstream popularity with the "Let's Dance" album) would be best suited to it. Bowie wanted to make a children's movie, liked the concept, and found the script funnier and more amusing than many other contemporary special effects movies."

      @martineshamzin7535 6 років тому +13

      That isn't true. Movie makers love their craft no less now. I think the sad thing is how the entertainment industry is so ugly and political right now( I don't mean like politics like Democrats and Republicans, although certainly that is there too. I mean more like people trying to push each other out of the way, and manipulating each other. Plus too much of who you know and not what you know.) People who work on CGI are every bit as artistic and detail oriented. Visual artists will always love details. Compuer or not; Its still all coming from a human sketching.

It happened at a party, and I'd sneaked away from my mother to find out what the older kids were watching in the den. When my mom found me and pulled me away, I asked her, "Why is that man talking funny?" She had to explain to me where England was on a globe owned by the family, throwing the party.

    Sad that budgets are so bloated in the industry that movies aren't made like this collaboration was anymore. Thank Glob the late Jim, David, Terry and company made this brilliant work of classic storytelling no longer available due to studios unwilling to take the risks on practical effects and original world building in service of creators' vision.
    Sadder yet that this doc was only released in clips by The Jim Henson Company channel, still sadder that this and the latter doesn't have captions for those who need them for accessibility sake.

    Wow, it's very interesting to hear Bowie's raw recorded voice in "Magic Dance"... If you listen to the movie full mix you can hear a little of his screeching here, but they also blended a 2nd take with reverb, compression, all that.
    Edit - HOLY those sets!!!!

    14:45 it sounds like Jennifer Connelly was influenced by all the Brits around her in the way that she speaks. Just listen to the way she says "actually".

    Absolutely amazing movie, one of my favorites of the 80s. So many creative geniuses involved; the first starring role in a major film for future Oscar winner, Jennifer Connelly; and the soon-to-be Dr. Beverly Crusher of Star Trek:TNG, Cheryl "Gates" McFadden, as the movement choreographer. Monty Python's Terry Jones writes the script, George Lucas co-produces, Jim's son Brian is the voice for Hoggle, and of course... David Bowie. Amazing.

    43:38 Here comes David Bowie and Jennifer Connelly. (Both amazing, Jennifer doing all the actions in the movie. Wow!) Speedily dancing by. Having fun, imagine being in her place. It would be wonderful to act in this movie. Jim said "We all had a lot of fun doing it." Perfect timing here.

    The Bog of Eternal Stench is Jim's hat's off to Mel Brooks, whose classic Blazing Saddles made that scene possible.
