A thief definitely can. These thieves use a repeater device that capture the signal from the key fob to transmit it to the onboard receiver in the vehicle. It can definitely allow them to unlock and open the door, and take your vehicle while you’re sound asleep.
While this tip is practical, useful and a cheap way to stop the transmitter in your key fob to completely stop, if you prefer you can purchase a an RFID blocking case that covers the entire key fob and does the same in stopping any signal from emitting from within the cover. They’re about $11 to $20. it’s not that bad in pricing, but if you’re not looking to not spend any money then the tip on disabling the transmitter with a few simple clicks works just as well.

My daughter was with a friend and found the friend had to be well over 100 feet away, nearly 200 feet away, before the car was securely locked. Think about that in a crowded parking lot or especially your own driveway. They may not be able to steal your car by driving away, but they can wait in the back seat to attack you or steal whatever you have in the car.

Will have to try this on my 21 Jeep and my wifes 15 chevy. I ordered my Jeep with a built in theft deterrent... a 6 speed manual transmission. Went to get my oil changed the other day the kid came in and told the boss it had a manual. No one on staff knew how to operate a stick so i had to pull it in for them. Best investment i have made was gettting that Jeep with a stick.

Newer Toyota / Lexus keyless fobs have moved over to the motion detection type, they automatically stop transmitting the signal after a few minutes once they sense the keyless fob has stopped moving. This is one of the reasons the car thieves now use the CAN invader method instead of relay theft. AFAIK if it has Toyota / Lexus safety sense 3.0 then the CAN invader method shouldn't work as the CAN encryption hasn't been cracked - YET!

I just bought my first Toyota after a lifetime of Honda ownership. I love my new car but I was surprised by how basic Toyota’s key fob was. Honda fobs have a proximity sensor where you can set the doors to unlock or lock a set distance when you are walking to or away from the vehicle. The driver seat and mirror settings are activated when the corresponding key opens the door. You can start the car from your fob and the “real” secret key has the capability to actually start the car.

It's a great idea but it needs to be a toggle feature. Once you push any of the buttons to lock/unlock the car, it goes back to broadcasting the RFID signal and you have to do that process all over again. Instead, they should make it to where you do it once to turn off the broadcasting, and it stays off untill you repeat those steps with the buttons again and it turns back on.

I have replaced my batteries on the key fob and the key fob does work. From time to time I noticed that the car says the batteries I believe in the key fob are low but after pulling the battery out and checking it they are not low. I also noticed when I get into the car if it doesn't detect the key fob if I stay there for about 20 seconds it will finally see the keys. what do you think this problem could be?

If you've dropped it several times, it may have internal damge in the transmitter signal. I'g call the dealership to out what test can be done to confirm this in case you need a replacment.

@@NowYouKnow007 I will check to see if both fobs act the same way. One fob could be damaged but I think you would just lose communication altogether not report a weak battery condition. Let me dig into this a little more see what I can find out.

A little on/off switch on the fob would be better

thanks for showing that feature! if someone was close to your car, they could get in and start it when you were walking up

You would really have to be in the car to start it. The proximity needed to start the car is less.

I have a Dealer friend, and he has a concern that you may “brick” the remote if it’s not a built in normal option for that particular setup. Anyone experience that??

Very doubtful as that button combination could easily be done accidentally by a kid playing with them or being pressed in your pocket.

Does the deactivate option work if you store your deactivated key phob next to a second one close by that might still be sending a signal?

      Did I read it right,
      If one is ON,
      and one is OFF,
Do they Interact With Each Other???
      My Guess OFF,
      Would be the Clue?

When you deactivate a key fob, it is iff until you press a button again. It will not communicate at all, not with your car or another key fob.

Some stupid questions here: does this work on such and a car? If they own such car, why dont they go and try it out?
