Darren put his heart and fucking soul into this game. He's the lead composer, the singing voice of Orpheus, voices the main character and a major side character (neither of these actually BEING Orpheus, who's speaking voice is someone else), and held the office record for fastest clear time of the game. Absolute weapon

I do find it odd that he wasn't voicing Orpheus. Like I get that voice acting and singing are 2 different skills, but since he's voicing anyway, why wouldn't the singing voice and speaking voice be the same person? I don't hate it, just found it odd because he's canonically singing in game.

@@TarundiMCI would guess his speaking voice sounded too similar to Zagreus's speaking voice. He sings all in head voice so it isn't noticeable in that case.

@@hieronymushumble5716 Yeah, that's true. Could have someone else voice Zag, but he probably wanted to do it (and did a great job!).

Once you start to get into the game you'll piece together why there's three separate versions. This game's progression and exposition is easily one of the most impressive parts about it, and songs/moments like this one are a big reason why

To date there still hasn't been a roguelike that ties all the runs together in such a coherent way. It's so good.

What I love is that they're not singing the same notes, and Orpheus is singing counter melody to Eurydice and they pair so well together. It's definitely more impactful in context than as a standalone listen.

*Not a spoiler for the game itself, but some backstory of who Orpheus and Eurydice are in greek mythology.
"The most famous story in which Orpheus figures is that of his wife Eurydice. While walking among her people, the Cicones, in tall grass at her wedding, Eurydice was set upon by a satyr. In her efforts to escape the satyr, Eurydice fell into a nest of vipers and suffered a fatal bite on her heel. Her body was discovered by Orpheus who, overcome with grief, played such sad and mournful songs that all the nymphs and gods wept. On their advice, Orpheus traveled to the underworld. His music softened the hearts of Hades and Persephone, who agreed to allow Eurydice to return with him to earth on one condition: he should walk in front of her and not look back until they both had reached the upper world. Orpheus set off with Eurydice following; however, as soon as he had reached the upper world, he immediately turned to look at her, forgetting in his eagerness that both of them needed to be in the upper world for the condition to be met. As Eurydice had not yet crossed into the upper world, she vanished for the second time, this time forever." - Wikipedia, Orpheus

Don't forget that Hades was not entirely benevolent - part of the deal, was that he made Eurydice's footsteps silent, meaning Orpheus was forced to walk ahead of her, never turning, trusting that she was right behind him. Right at the final step, doubt overtook him, causing him to turn and be sure. She was not yet over the threshold, and thus was she whisked away, as Orpheus had failed his task.

Let's not forget the other part.
Orpheus, afterward, apparently sang a song so sad that it was ruining everyone's vibes, so they murdered him.
This is the Lament of Orpheus, in-game.

Honestly, "Good Riddance" is a complex phrase when taken into context with the relationship with these characters. It'll mean more and make you think more when you meet and get to know each of them. I hope you have fun!

I love how, Both of the versions, Orpheus and Eurydice, Have legs to stand on their own, But after hearing the duet, and listening back you can feel the sadness, The belonging they have with one another. Whereas the duet feels like a couple, free to live their lives, still sad, but more of a bittersweetness than pure sadness. at least i feel.

Oh yesss, I'm so glad this came up here. Though I realized it's been a while since I heard the just Orpheus version; it almost felt odd. I kept expecting Eurdydice to be intertwined in there which is very fitting. I just stopped the first time hearing each version in game. Love Darren Korb and Ashley Barret.
Supergiant had an orchestral concert a few years ago at PAX (it's on the supergiant games channel) and this was so haunting live.

Euridice is more pronounced like “Yur” (like your but with a U instead of an O) “id” (like the ego and id) “is” and finally just “e”
So all together Euridice = Yur-id-is-e
Also it’s 3 songs because in game lore and “history” stuff Orpheus went to Hades to get his beloved muse back but failed at the last step separating him from Euridice for so long and in this game you reunite them so they have the same song but each song is missing the other half to become the true song

For further amazing music and another version of the story of Orpheus and Eurydice, I highly recommend Hadestown.
    "Cause here's the thing
    To know how it ends
And still begin to sing it again
As if it might turn out this time"

Pro tip for pronouncing Greek names: there are no silent vowels (e.g. Euridice is 4 syllables).

I hope you didn't use "Good Riddance" as a goodbye ?
As it means something like "Fuckin' hell, you're finally leaving", it's like goodbye said aggressively.
