Get Your Life Together Challenge: Sleep Schedule 😴

  • Starting the Get Your Life Together Challenge Series! This week, I'm focusing on fixing my sleep schedule, waking up and going to bed earlier. This is my biggest weakness, so bear with me lol. I'm a total night owl & have never been a morning person. For me, this challenge isn't about perfection, but about incremental progress! Any tips would also be appreciated 😸
    The reason I wanted to start this series is bc there are a lot of "get your life together" videos out there, but they all seem to pack everything into one video/day, making it seem easy or that it's possible to get your entire life together that quickly. In reality, changing your life takes effort, consistency, willpower, patience, and time. This series is my live attempt to take a slower method and focus on a different area of my life each week.
    Though I'm focusing on one area a week, I'm going to work on continuing and building all the improvements as we go. Hope you join me in this challenge! :) #GYLT #GYLTchallenge

      @@eiaeheh For me, its because I love mornings. Waking up early and have sometime to sit down and reset myself through morning pages helps me be more happy and productive throughout the day, especially if its a long one or when I have to meet up with a lot of people. Plus, I sleep a bit early so my body just wakes up at that time. Oh and also its prayer time for us Muslims(winter time). My day does not flow well if I did not have that time to just sit down and be with myself before interacting with others.

    I once heard someone say, "get up earlier. not early, just earlier". I think that's the key. No matter what time you want to start your day, waking up just an hour earlier or so allows you to start it better. and you know what? you just showed us that you can live your dream life and be successful without having to wake up early :)

    🌟 Hey Aileen, something that helped me waking up early without snoozing my alarm is the 5 seconds rule by Mel Robbins. The alarm sounds, I count 5, 4, 3, 2, 1 and I get out of bed with full force... then I turn off my alarm. Don't touch your phone until you're out of bed. It really helps.

    Wow, thanks for your kindness & tips in the comments! I was afraid of uploading this video bc it didn't show a major improvement, I was disappointed and afraid of being judged. But I'm glad I still posted it. I realized I had a lot more to say about this topic:
    1️⃣ There's this societal belief that you have to wake up early and be a morning person to be a responsible, successful person. I wanted to show that it's not necessary - you can sleep in, wake up late, and still get things done and succeed. I've had this sleep schedule all my life (except for school, when I really struggled to wake up at 6am everyday). My natural sleep cycle might be genetic/influenced, as my dad is a night owl and wakes up very late too. He's been waking up at 2-4pm all my life (when I was a kid, and still to this day) and he still manages to succeed in a big way. I owe it to him for showing me that you don't have to wake up early to succeed, run multiple businesses, and support your family. The sad thing is being shamed for having a different sleep schedule than most people - I still deal with a little shame and guilt about that from society & the people around me.
    2️⃣"If you now work a job where you don't have to wake up early, why try to force your natural sleep cycle to wake up earlier?" The reality is, the rest of the world functions on a morning person's schedule, so it's harder to get some things done outside of business hours, when people get off work. I still have to work with others so our work times need to overlap, even if for a couple hours. Also, I mentioned that sunlight is important for filming videos, and in the fall/winter the sun sets earlier ~4:30pm. That's why I have to wake up earlier these seasons, so I can get more sunlight in. In the summer I can sleep in and still film videos til 8pm (when the sun sets), I love it so much. I would love if the sun could set at 8pm all year round 😋
    3️⃣ I'm so glad I didn't choose to do a 5am wake up challenge because that's not realistic or desirable for me at all. Even though my schedule is outside of the ordinary, it's not about the time you wake up, it's about the quality of rest you get and how amazing it makes you feel in your life. Let your sleep support your mental & physical health and find a schedule that makes you feel the best! Good luck!
    P.S. A lot of you mentioned the book that explains our internal body clock: Why We Sleep by Matthew Walker - thank you! Just wanted to share it again here for anyone who needs it.

    I believe the key is consistency- you need to go to bed and get up at the same time every day. And don’t take a nap for the first week. It is tough, but letting yourself sleep in at the beginning makes the process take longer. I have a son and 2 dogs so sleeping in doesn’t really happen but having a better sleep schedule does make me feel better and be more productive overall.

      I am on that Vampire night owl schedule and have been on it for over a year. I need to reverse this in the next couple weeks and I don’t know how I’m gonna break this habit. It’s just so hard for me to wind down at night and my boyfriend gets off work at 12:30 AM so I’m naturally up late at night because that’s when I see him. But if I want to go to my parents house for Christmas and see my niece and nephew and my sister whom I have not seen in four years they all go to bed at 10 PM and are up by 7 AM. They are not OK with me sleeping in past 10 AM.

    This was so honest that it's very refreshing! I think one thing that sabotages you is the fact that you put multiple alarms. I did this exact same thing before, but when I decided to change it to just one alarm, it really made a change, mostly because at some point you freak out you're going to sleep in if you don't move right with that single alarm. I admit at first it was tough, but at the long term it was the only thing that worked for me to make it a consistent habit :) *Good luck*

    So, I'm also a nightowl. I used to think this was something people made up as an excuse as to why they stayed up late and got up late. However, I read a book called "why we sleep" by Matthew Walker and it taught me so much! Being a nightowl is a real, scientific thing! We have an internal bodyclock, and for nightowls it's basically impossible to go to sleep before midnight. I won't go into the detailed science of it but we basically don't have the right chemicals in our body before that telling us to go to sleep. For us, going to bed around 1am or 2am and getting up at 9 or 10am is the best! So, your idea of getting up at 9.30 is great!
    Ever since reading this book I've really focused more on getting the right amount of sleep and it feels really good when I get it right!

    Lately I’ve been feeling really depressed about how late I sleep in. Daylight savings time makes it worse because the sun sets so early. This vlog makes me feel less alone. Also, I’ve strangely been more productive since I’m trying to cram so much into the hours that I’m awake and the sun is out. Thanks for normalizing my night owl tendencies 🙏🏼

    Wow, this made me think about how it is all about the mindset and also, how important it really is to just focus on YOUR own best.
    When I wake up at 10 am, I seriously want to die haha. It feels so late for me, and I'm feeling that guilt throughout the entire day. Waking at 7-8 is ideal for me and what I always aim for. Yet, for you, 10 am would be ideal and much better than 1pm.
    So although it is great to collect inspiration and motivation from one another, it really shows how the most important thing is to focus on yourself and listen to your body and gut feeling and do what's right for you.

    Gosh, girl, I love how real you are (first saw you on Matt D'avella's podcast) . Sleeping and waking early has been my lifelong challenge to the point of never having been to university lectures or work on time, so I can totally relate to you, except I don't even give myself seven hours of sleep daily. Thanks for your honesty..no one else seems to be willing to admit they sleep after 2am and rise close to noon. I believe the secret to waking up early is to remove the negative mental blocks that we can't or that we're still tired..but each their own method. Anyway, I've just subscribed. Cheers!

    I really get where you are coming from. I’ve been a night owl all my life and have been surrounded by morning people and have felt bad about myself. In the last 5 years I’ve decided to embrace it, though work means I have to get up early at times. Indeed tomorrow I’ve a 7am flight to Glasgow so will need to get up at 4.30am , so I’ve lots of alarms set. Like you I’ve thought I must be lazy, but I’m not as I get so much done later in the week. It’s about working with your rhythms and powering through when I have to get up early. Once I started to give myself an easier time I’ve felt better and carer wise I’m a Director for a large business so it’s not really held me back....it’s just meant there are times I’ve had to play against type. Thank you for such a real video. Love your content 🤗😴

  • @HeatherCutright
    @HeatherCutright 5 років тому

    I relate to this on so many levels! This video came at a time when I really needed it. Just reading the title resonated with me and made me click right away. My sleep schedule has been extremely messed up for the past two months and it's stressing me out. I am a night owl as well, but lately I've been going to bed around, like, 10pm and it has thrown my whole life off because I don't get anything done that I used to do at night.
    I appreciate you talking about the stigma that comes with being a night owl. If you wake up around 1pm or so, people assume that you are a lazy person. There definitely is a societal belief that successful people wake up early in the morning.

    Wow! Feeling like a weirdo now. Aileen, I believe I'm your opposite. I really enjoy waking up at 5 am and if I wake after 10 I feel like I wasted half of my day. • @LivyBennet

      @Brittany FFF True. What bothers me is that I can't sleep in even when I need to. Like when I go to bed around 2 am and I automatically wake up at 7 am and can't fall asleep anymore. It's really annoying. I go through the day already exhausted because I didn't sleep well.

    • @Inekane
      @Inekane 5 років тому +7

      I started to wake up at 4am just because I have zero energy after work and I can’t focus on my passions so I shifted my schedule to do things I love before work and sleep after work & gym. I wake up usually happy and motivated because I start the day with things I choose to do and than I go to work to pay the bills, go home exhausted and I can go straight to bed without guilt.

    Get your life together challenge : I love the idea! There are a number of these areas in which I'll happily follow along :)
    Regarding sleep, I thought I'd give you something to be grateful for ;-) Have you considered that being able to sleep late could actually be a bonus?
    I know it sounds like a great problem to have, but I *cannot* sleep after 6 AM. I trained myself to wake up early at some point in my 20s, and now, no matter how late I go to bed or fall asleep, I wake up at 6 regardless of anything else. And then I can't sleep again until the night. So if I'm lacking sleep, I just have to slug through the day, typically very unproductively and hope that I will sleep better the next night.
    So right now my sleep challenge is to 1) be in bed at 10:30 no matter what - and 2) try to read something that doesn't excite me so I do fall asleep early enough.

    The thing that has helped me the most is being strict with my routine which means going to bed at the exact same time every night and waking up at the same time each morning.
