    The Samyang 85mm F1.2 XP is Samyang's most telephoto lens in their XP lineup that is made for DSLR cameras. This lens is manual focus and is only available in the Canon EF mount but I am able to use this lens on my Sony a7 III with my lens adapter. If you have a mirrorless body and want to adapt this lens to your body, you will just need to get the correct adapter for your body and is able to accept the Canon EF mount.
    This is a lens that is primarily targeted towards portrait photography but I have used it for several other aspects like cityscape. With it's wide aperture of F1.2, this is going to be versatile for low light conditions as well as helping you get a smooth and out of focus background from your subject in focus, otherwise known as bokeh.

    I have this lens. this is a great lens. use it on my a7III and GFX. my only complaint is its flaring and weather sealing. You can set it to 1.2, just go to the settings, change exposure steps to .5 and exposure compensation dial must be always at 0.

    Regarding the f1.3 vs f1.2 situation. Yes you can go to exposure steps and change it from 0.3 to 0.5 and it will display f1.2 on screen. However I carefully observed the aperture blades whilst changing this and noted changing from 1.3 to 1.2 does not make any difference to the actual aperture, only what appears on the screen. And yes it is a massive aperture so my feeling that even when it shows f1.3 it is really a true f1.2.

    What's the point of a manual focus 85mm lens? This is obviously for portraits and crazy bokeh, but with manual focus and that huge aperture it's going to be almost impossible to get a sharp picture.

    • @JohnSisonPhotography
      @JohnSisonPhotography  3 роки тому +2

      It can take a bit of practice but when you nail the shots, it can look pretty amazing. If you think MF on this lens is crazy, there is also a Samyang 135mm F2 lens hehe

    • @oasean

      I had this lens, if branded Rokinon's XP series, on my Canon 6D, whose stock focusing screen I switched to the matte focusing screen, better for manual focusing. By chance, I did only one session with the lens-environmental portraiture on busy urban sidewalks-and generally missed focus only at headshot framing. The rest was mostly reliable.
      Yet even at headshot framing, by shooting bursts, which is my custom anyhow for portraits, I obtained perhaps my favorite portrait ever. That photo's only flaw-that the farther eye, rather than the nearer eye, is in sharpest focus-is negligible to most viewers. And in fact, the occasion was too hectic for me to even notice the lens' focus confirmation.
      Once I switched to Sony, the α7R II, a few months later, the speedbooster than I had as my only Canon EF adapter returned an error with, of all my lenses, only this lens. By the time I got Sigma's MC-11 adapter, I had already sold this lens. Yet I figure that focusing it on mirrorless would be fairly easy, given focus peaking or especially Canon RF's focusing aid.

    • @oasean

      I think that there's no straightforward, universal fact of the matter. I think that the camera reports F stop by reading the EXIF data and perhaps gauging optic input. Meanwhile, the lens manifests significant focus breathing, and so its focal length is not a constant 85mm. This entails that the literal F stop-focal length divided by pupil diameter-is not constantly f/1.2 truly.

  • @maxrogers9639

    I have the Rokinon version. My setup is the Sony A711 and the Sigma MC-11 adapter. I did a photoshoot with this lens and had mixed results. I think using a tripod would have improved my capture rate. Nonetheless, the in focused captures are beautiful with creamy Bokeh and that is the reason why I bought this lens.

    • @JohnSisonPhotography
      @JohnSisonPhotography  4 роки тому

      Using a tripod definitely helps, if possible, set your shutter speed faster as well to avoid any blur. Were you able to shoot at F1.2?

    • @maxrogers9639
      @maxrogers9639 4 роки тому

      John Sison I too see the shift to f1.3 but during the shoot the camera showed f1.2. Today the camera and lens combo shows f1.3. Not sure if this makes a difference but while the lens is attached put your camera in memory mode and see what the aperture is. My camera shows f1.2 in memory mode 1 and 2. Hope this helps.

      If there is a filter on the front of the lens, this should solve the issue of the lens sucking up dust while focusing in and out.
