    I own the Nikki Sixx Gibson Blackbird and I adore it! I love that the minimalism of the instrument just on or off. All the tone/volume comes at the amp. The Maltese cross inlays are cool and it plays great! Good to see you touch on it in this video. I have no idea how many of them were made.

      I bought one of those back in late 02/early 03. It was a beast, played and sounded great. The weight and neck dive kind of sucked, but it was worth it. I wish I had kept it.

    I'm surprised the master volume/tone knobs aren't individual master volumes for each pickup given that there is no position switch, but it sounds great! Great review and demo, Trogly!

      I am no expert,but there is a reason Gibson was in receivership-over priced and poorly designed instruments.

    • @henrygvidonas9573
      @henrygvidonas9573 2 роки тому

      @@cahg3871 Yes - and that reason had nothing to do with guitars and basses. "Gibson"-branded instruments was pretty much the only financially healthy business in Henry Juszkiewicz' house of cards, despite all the moronic design decisions, ridiculous labour conditons, and constant QC issues.
      Taking out loans to avoid defaulting on other loans is not a sustainable business model. Same with buying brand after brand - only to do absolutely nothing constructive with most of them. Then again, allegedly, all those brands were only acquired as fronts to get overfinanced loans to keep prior loans from collapsing.
      Funny how Mr. Harvard Business School's personal Wikipedia page has magically disappeared and redirects to the page for Gibson now, innit?

    I'm an old school bassist and not a fan of gimmick bands like Motley Crue. I do love Firebird basses but I wouldn't pay more for a signature Firebird bass just because it says Nikki Sixx on it. Thanks for the bass content, always appreciated.

    A really quick and very light pass with a damp Mr Clean magic eraser takes all of the gloss out of the finish and restores the satin really close to factory finish. I have an absolute beater of a 2000 SG Gothic that was nearly completely gloss everywhere except under the pick guard, but now is back to a really nice satin with the transition at the pickguard nearly unnoticeable.

  • @nicandknacksandseans
    @nicandknacksandseans 2 роки тому +9

    Y'know with a deep-colored flame finish like that, I think the satin almost looks better than a gloss. You can see more movement without the glare.

    Hey, Trogly, I have a pre- 2010 Epiphone Blackbird like the second one you covered with nothing but an on/off toggle for controls. Looks just like the on you showed, all satin or matte black with the cross fret markers, except mine is a set neck and the pickups have "Six Pack" on them. Though you would find this interesting.

      There's also my solution. I bought a DigiTech BP355 digital bass processor. Tons of sounds and processing power, an expression pedal and cheap as dirt because they're old. They can make a bass sound GREAT!
      I liked the tone Nikki's bass gave out, even though I would probably put in a stacked pot so as to have 2 volume controls without spoiling the look. That basic tone could be retrieved just by running both volumes full out. Mixing would be just like the Fender Jazz Bass. But that's just what I'D do!

    GIBSON PLEASE make a Sixx6String LesPaul Standard with this exact 3 piece flame-maple top color/finish with the stepped-out pronounced neck through body sandwiched by 2 flame maple wingtips pointing outward at 90*. THE EXACT wood grain patterns and color/finish as the Gibson Nikki Sixx signature bass guitar reviewed here at 1:07 on Trogly’s guitar show. This is a beautiful color/finish, with a stunning non-traditional accented neck through body, I would love to have this in a 6 string…🙂

    I went to 2nd and Main today and they had a nice looking Epiphone Thunderbird. You think a lot of people have different views on what mint means but I've heard to many calling new guitars vintage. Granted the may have looked at something that had the same style Qs as a true vintage. Possibly a reissue or something. Your supposed to be able to play a bass through a spark amp and a Fender Mustang IV. I have both and a bass bit haven't tried it though.

    Man so much I dislike in that wiring harness 😞 Personally I have only bad experience with the barrel output jack's. Both pickups always on!?? Mini togle switch I dislike to and used like that. And pickups on the wiper? Asking for trouble. All live points on same level ask for noise. Like antenna when volume on the pickups is set to low. Plus modern tone wiring. If this was my player I would change the mini together to switchcraft one and use it to switch pickups and use master volume and tone with 50's tone wiring. If you need killswitch I would use better one maybe even buckethead like one. Then I would use two volume pots with zero load to be able to mix in pickups. Or do first wiring and drill new hole and install killswitch in it.

      below the bridge? that's a grip, nikki sixx uses it to hold the bass in place. a lot of gibson models are known for having a heavy headstock that pulls the instrument out of playing position when using a strap. the long neck of a bass makes it especially likely to be unbalanced

    As far as your comments on the 3-point being adjustable in angle, that is simply not true. If they are too flat or forward angled they will pull their body posts out over time. They are notoriously terrible bridges, some of the worst that exist. The only reason they are on Gibsons still are because of their love for tradition.

Bought a record from 1981 last month, sleeve described as Mint. I get it, record was stored in the sleeve so there was mild ring wear, and the record itself ripped through the bottom of the sleeve. Dude fought me saying it was Mint when I messaged him. Everyone thinks they got fucking gold these days.

    I dig the look of a Thunderbird, but neck through basses gain sustain at the expense of funk-gurgle attack IMHO. If you need that sound (for slap bass for example) bolt on neck basses just do it better. BTW, Austin, for a better slap sound, play right below where the neck joins the body.

    • @ArchieOnEarth
      @ArchieOnEarth 2 роки тому

      @@SgtPnkks I preach about the neck joint because I once had two Kramer Forum basses, one neck-through and one bolt-on, both with Spector P-J pickups. The neck-through could sing for days and felt smooth as butter, but the bolt-on’s slap/pick tone was a notch better (and preferred by studio engineers). The neck-through was not “bad” at slap by any means, but having lived with both neck joints in otherwise identical instruments convinced me that it creates a difference in tone.

    I just don't understand the Richlite hatred. I'd much rather have a Richlite fretboard, than know that 19 trees were cut down and thrown away, just to find the one that had the jet black ebony that the manufacturer demanded. I won't use ebony in my builds anymore. If someone wants black, it's going to be either Richlite or Royal Blackwood. Well, that or someone else can build it for them.

      Most of the time they’ll use a (kind of nasty) black dye on an ebony board (I think it’s from the violin industry) that isn’t jet black. But streaky Ebony can be beautiful too.

    In my opinion I think it might look better with a black pickguard,but still keep his signature and XX.

    Richlite fretboards are really cheap I’ve never played one but if your building a guitar on a budget the fretboards area only about $25 which is very affordable if you don’t mind the feeling of richlite.

    That three post bridge is the reason I refuse to buy a Gibson bass. They did it right for one year in 2015 the SG basses got a modern bridge that individual saddle hight adjustment. And they went bad to this piece of crap. Oh you want to properly set your radius easily, have a nice low action, and not have to re intonate every time you change strings? Too bad. That three post bridge is the bigsby of the bass world.
