- Short demo of MXR Bass Preamp with the MXR bass compressor.
Direct output from the MXR preamp into soundcard.
No amp, other outboard gear or plugins were hurt in this video;-)
Im playing my Sandberg California MarloweDK signature 5 string bass strung with the new awesome Dunlop Super Bright bass strings ( nickel, gauge 45-125)

When I was 11 I picked up the bass and watched your videos to get better and learn new things. Now I’m 22 and I’m so thankful for your channel! 🙏🏻
Sounds wonderful to me! Great job as usual, MarloweDK. You inspire a lot of people.
Sound is awesome on all three but, the best part is the tee shirt!
That Preamp tone is fantastic
Marlowe Marlowe..
I remember when I first saw your videos when I was 15 years old.
Years have gone by, I am now 22 years old.
You still kick ass.
So much talent you have.
I love this video so much. I've been known to put this on as background music at parties now and then !
love listening to you play bass..makes me happy :D
Seriously awesome sound and tone!
Absolutely fantastic
The preamp tone is outstanding!
Great vid.Nice sound and great playing
marlowedk they all sound amazing. even without any boxes it sounded great. in fact you can lose the bass itself and would still sound amazing. u r just that good
Very helpful video. Thanks a lot for showing your comp settings. I watched the Dunlop MXR demo of this pedal and tried all their suggestions. I like this better. Rock On!
Sweet tone!
This sounds so satisfying. that tone, the way you play. it's so tight. I like aggressive slapping, but the way you play is so cool that it makes me want to slow down and make sure everything is played correctly first. (like I've been advised before). thank you for this ;)
The longer you play you'll realize the dopest slap playing is actually when players use it super minimally. For the dudes who are doing nothing but slapping it's like "alright we get it" now play something tasteful lol
If you keep it tight it makes alot of room for skill and speed
Love the bass line
Great playing with a great Sandberg california bass
Definitely vibing the MXR Bass Preamp.
It doesnt take away anything from the crisp and near perfect original DI tone at all.
It just enhances it with some extra punch and some low end fullness to the sound which i find very pleasing to my ears.
It is a bass guitar after all!
Contemporary 2 ... love this beat on the dr 880 ! And your bass playing of course !
Man you are my go to teacher when i need ideas on grooves ... why did you stop doing videos
Ill be back soon thank you:)
Yes, there's not much out there beyond the beginner slap content. Lessons or not, your videos teach a lot & offer so much new material. Hope to see you back!
haha your name is so funny, just have to say :)
One can really hear the difference in clarity one the preamp has been engaged :) good stuff.
Une vibration merveilleuse:) mille merci pour ton énergie.Grosse bise d'âme
the perfect slap sound is the sound you love not a idea but a reality !!
Thats a sick bass too man,
Very good!!
CRAZY TONE
pretty cool tone ! i love that shirt ! greetings from tj mexico
Don't overlook the greatness of the guys shirt.
The bass is such a great instrument.
Awesome !
Nice groove and i love your T-shirt man!
Pops and mutes are clarified and normalized after comp. If an unskilled bassist play, we can hear the difference easily. Marlowe is a pro, and his tension is perfect, he dont need any compressor and also the rig is awesome.
My favorite bass strings.
Love the way he smiles when his wife catches him filming.
Thanks! Great comparison in the slap, but the dunlop strings make a lot of difference!
I think the 3rd one sounded the coolest. (Prob cause its the loudest lol) It sounded like an 8bit mario game. Thats bad ass keep it up
Compressor part is the best for sure
Awesome.
I like your sound.
KOOL AND THE GANG MY FRIEND!!!
Awesome playing... but I had to give the thumbs up just because of how your head moves when you groove. :)
actually quite liked the 'no effect' sound, there, but would probably appreciate the merits of the full sound if I heard it in a musical mix.
OH MAN YOU'RE SOO GROOVY
hahaha amazing just pure Slap Bass nice.
Interesting video. I'ts a little difficult to tell whether the added effects actually improve the sound or if it's just the added volume gives the illusion of a better sound. I think I like the compressor but I wonder if the preamp isn't redundant. I have a Eden amp and it's EQ has the same setup as the MXR. Bass treble and sweepable mids. Unless I wanted to switch between two settings, I can't see any reason to add another preamp. Especially since I already have a preamp on my bass.
Awesome t-shirt
Sounds good Marlowe , you're the Sandberg bass rescue dude like Pet Rescue.
I use a lighter string 45 - 105 D'addario , no 5th string for me , they seem to do me good. Maybe I'll try Dunlop next. There is a big difference in the 45 and 50 G string I found that out and won't ever go back to 50 , there is no pop or muted sound to the 50.
Definitely tightens everything up a bit and adds some nice sustain.
que buen ritmo amigo!!!
We miss you Mr. DK of funk bass.
I have crappy ears, it's hard for me to tell a major difference in tone between the two. I did hear a demo of the MXR bass envelope filter, which i quite liked. I have to say that i like the way you bob your head to the beat. Also, I have to say that I really like your slap bass lessons app for Ipad.
I'm still looking for the perfeca all-around tone... I think I may have found it with the MXR Blowtorch. All I need to complete it is with a bass compressor. Any suggestions?
Do you know how it would sound if I put the preamp between bass and compressor? I know that comp wouldn't effect the DI signal of the preamp though. I'm just curious about switching the effect order. I have a DI box that I could put after the comp.
Your T-shirt is so cool man, where did you bought it? I want one badly. Nice playing by the way, tremendously clean slap, that bass and preamp sounds awesome.
I initially bought the Dunlop lights (40.60.80.100) and the tone was dead. However I bought the Medium today (45 - 105), totally different string both in tone and feel. Much better! The lights are almost smooth-wound.
I can't seem to find the Dunlop Super Bright Nickel strings anymore??
Any advise? I'm in the Netherlands
Thanks!
hey man that would help thanks but i ve got a question how can i remove that buzz sound of my guitar when ever i turn it on was it grounded on amp or its the guitar?
I like "no FX" best as a vintage Jazz basssound. I think *if* you want a preamp sound you should go with a 1073 clone, but with the tone blend closed like that you wouldn't benefit from it either. Nice slap lick BTW! Also take a look at the DBX 160 A compressors! But you have some quite good periphials in your rack, so is that one of these ironic endorsment videos?!
Was there too much of a difference? I couldn't be bothered with a bunch of boxes, I just plug the bass into an amp and off I go.
Marlowe is a top man for demoing this stuff but I agree, the differences are so subtle I wouldn't bother with the 'FX'. Great bass, good amp, decent strings, maybe a comp + eq but most of all that which Marlowe has in spades - great technique and a love of music 🙂🎸🎸🇬🇧🙂
Seems to be a slight volume increase on the mrx comp + preamp wich will fool most into thinking it sounds better.
Btw. You should go with the maple fretboards those dark fretboards have an aweful clangy peak at the 2k-4k mark!
Nice Slappin man!! :-)
Nice! What are these like for pick/fingerstyle playing?
Very cool as always...how do you route the Avalon with the pedals???
Very nice demo. Any particular reason why the pre-amp/EQ is behind the compressor and not the other way around?
I have the Compressor. I need that pre amp and that shirt!
Please use the low-B string with your fantastic play.
Great video! Marlowe, is that an alder "bodied" jazz bass?
is it bad that i prefferred it without the effects? :p
Can you get a similar sound with any of the presets on the Avalon?
how they compare to Mmiller super brights?
to me it sound ok without the pedals. my issue is a hartke 100 adn I can;t get no signal close to your initial one. strings are such a major topic? thanks.
5 shades of grey !!!!!
sounds good like the riff you were slapping out.
I really wanna learn how to play that riff
was that something you just put together? or did you learn it from a song?
Nice Pulp Fiction t-shirt!
The only question left unanswered is what difference the strings and bass make.
It would be nice to hear you compare this to a cheap bass with whatever strings come on it so we can see whether it is your playing that makes the difference or teh equipment.
Shitty bass makes a shitty sound, shitty strings make a shitty sound.
Shitty EQ makes a shitty sound.
Shitty player makes a shitty sound.
It's not difficult.
PROGrapeSmuggler3000
With that language you need a good slap . . . sound .
Dayum
I want to try that hand pose but my plucking finger always stucked. And then i chose the rock slap hand pose xD
what was that lick
I would love an honest opinion from you Marlowe. I was thinking of investing in a compressor and just using it for slap. I used one before and I thought accents and certain things weren't as noticeable with a compressor as they were without(could have just been a bad compressor, but it put me off them) do use compressors much? Do you find it makes that extra difference for harder to hear notes?
I dont think it as life or dead neccessity, but i generally use a bit of compression. as it glues the sound together. I often use the built in compressor of my tc electronic RH450 amp. But i use it as a subtle general effect not only for slap
MarloweDK - PlayBassNow.com cool I'll take that into consideration. Thanks for your reply.
+1 compression subtle effect - Keeley Bassist pedal for me. Excellent Gain control as well.
Hmm... sounds killer raw and only gets better...
What about sound on stingraycwith this strings ? I always curious how you eq your rays on amp and onboard preamp for solo and sectuon mix situation... Best! Btw. Dunlop nickels rocks ! Great sound, long live overall price/quality range is imo the best on the market ;)
Havent tried them on my Stingray yet. Normally when playing live i dont use the onboard EQ on my Stingrays, but some times when recording i boost bass/treble a bit . On the amp i actually cut the treble a bit when playing live
MarloweDK - PlayBassNow.com
Thanks ! :) And I've got one more question - do you use tweeters on your cabinets ? If yes how much volume you set ?
When you add the compressor I can hear the low volume notes way better. And the pre amp seems to add volume across the board. Is that what's going on?
Are there any tabs for the riff? awsome base line!
Is a 95 gauge sound wise better then a 105 in order to have a clear E string?
Do you have tabs for that bass line? I could really use this line in my playing.
What position are the pots? Thank you
Hey Thomas! Thanks for another funky demo! Quick question: what were the settings on your bass? Bridge pickup maxed?
on the bass, pickups and tone are maxed
Awesome video. Why on both pedals do you have the input volume raised past 12 but then the output below it? Wouldn't these counteract eachother or is that just the secret to your tone?
it just sounded better to me:-)
to simply put, gain drives the signal in the electronic path more hot, that hot signal make part of these processing(like capacitors) react differently than avg signal. Volume get louder as well since gain is up, So he lowered the output to reduce the level down so it wont just overdrive the amp/input
I'm too stupid to find the difference when adding a compressor >_> ..
Can anyone please describe to me what it changes? I kinda "feel" that the bass is gaining "volume" (as in acoustic size) but I'm still far away from naming the exact differences
Fucking badass
choice Marlow where you been bro
can we please have a tutorial on those riffs?
Nice shirt!
What pickups? So crisp
Let's show some love for the Dunlop Super Bright Strings! It is not all effects.
I really need to invest in a compressor...
Question. When ever I slap a open note it sounds good, but then a I fret a note and slap and it sounds dead, only when I slap tho. Is this a string adjustment issue or what? I tried it on the same bass at guitar center and didn't have this issue
+Patrick Littlefield Make sure your right forearm is not muting strings! Often when players slap they change the angle of right forearm to be more in line with or over the strings by wearing the bass higher or lower your rt. elbow, either of which brings your rt forearm over the strings. It's actually a great way to mute, esp B, E and A strings, but you've got to learn how to let it up to let notes ring. Hope this makes sense.
Wow du helt vild til slap og så på en five string! synes det er mega svært at gå fra 4 string til five string bass slap. har du nogle tips?
So you should not be able to hear the "clicking" of strings against the board when you slap? Or am I wrong?
Hi Marlow. When you use the MXR pre-amp do you even use the parametric EQ of your RH450? Is the MXR so much better in the way of shaping your basic bass sound? I´m asking because I also own a 450 and now thinking of getting me this lovely sounding MXR pre-amp. Cheers, Jan.
crip665 I can roughly get the same result with the rh450 eq, but this was a demo without amp - nice to have either recording in studio or playing on monitors/borrowed rigs
MarloweDK - PlayBassNow.com Thank you for your reply! So when you play with your own rig do you use the eq of the 450 or do you shape your tone mostly with the mxr?
