I'm glad you made this video, more people need to realize that you cant paint them with one song. They have an amazing discography and personally I was never bothered with Labies studio vocals, actually I like them very much (up until a recent few albums). It is also fascinating how anyone can claim John Petrucci's playing is soulless, I am conviced they have also only listened to one fast technical solo of his and thought thats it
So happy to see you talking about one of my all time favourite bands. Yes, I discovered them with Dance of Eternity, but I listened to the whole Metropolis Pt2 album and I inmediatly fell in love with the sound. I watched them live with Devin Townsend last year, a dream come true!
Metallica is my favorite band of all time, and at the same time I go through periods of time I listen to Count of Tuscany, Surrounded, Another Day, and endless others for weeks at a time. I love trying to play John Petrucci’s tunes on guitar as well. I think Dream Theater is one of the greatest bands in the past 30 years.
James Labrie's vocals have always been the most polarizing part of DT's music. I have tolerated them, for the most part. But the vocals are the reason why I'm not a daily listener of their stuff.
@@beinmetal IDK, maybe someone with Devin Townsend's sense of aggression and melody would have better suited them than Labrie's soft power metal chops. Like it would be cool to hear someone like John Bush sing Pull Me Under.
I started listen DT purely because of drumming and vocals for sure were big factor for me liking the songs but the more I listened and fell in love with the band you start looking at the stuff you didn't like first as complete opposite. So it has become my favorite band and hearing Portnoy returning was something unbelievable, I don't have to die without seeing the perfect lineup live
Train of Thought is what got me into DT and I gotta say it's gives me vibes of 80s Metallica. Their biggest influence in the writing of the album was actually Master of Puppets, and at that time they would play shows with the encore being the entirety of MoP. It was insane.
I think LaBrie's vocals have been quite hit and miss with their older stuff, but I think most of us can agree his voice is kinda unlistenable these days. But A Change of Seasons is probably my favourite of his vocal performances
@@theguyof360 they could have been communicated with any other vocalist, I'm just saying that I personally think his vocals were sometimes great, sometimes odd, thats my opinion
@@progfox He was a really good vocalist at one point, but I don't understand how he can honestly hear his own voice now and be proud of that, I'd just retire at that point.
There's a typical middle range singing part in the last few albums which I really don't like. It feels like the same boring thing and in those songs I feel the same that the vocals could be removed. However, in the older albums there are pretty good ones. Scenes from a memory album is good as it is for example. On the last few albums there are only a very few good vocal parts though. But Petrucci is a pretty good lyricsist still. I recommend listening to Space dye vest from the live album breaking the fourth wall, that's just great.
I think you're being too harsh towards the vocals. James's voice is an iconic part of the band's sound, I really don't agree with saying they're "redundant", the songs would not be the same without his voice. If you really want to just hear Dream Theater without vocals, just listen to Liquid Tension Experiment, 3 members of Dream Theater write and compose the music for it and it's purely instrumental.
Good to see you talking about DT. One of my favortie bands, along with Maiden and Metallica! I really like James' vocals, but I agree is polarizing as hell. Anyway, I'm happy that you listened to them all! Any favorites?
James' vocals are very hit or miss for me. I don't think the band would work as well without him personally, but a lot of the time his voice irritates me. Still love them though.
For some reason, I cannot be happy that Mike Portnoy returned, because Mangini is on a different level of being. Like, Portnoy is a great drummer, but Mangini was just so much better. Mangini could play anything that Portnoy could, but is that true vica-versa? (also great video!)
I agree Mangini has better technique but Portnoy is still a very good drummer and what is often overlooked, a huge creative power in DT music. I mean since Portnoy left, everything they did was just repetitive and boring. Technically great but uninspired. And I’ve been their fan since 6DOIT came out.
@@rabomarc My Dad has been a huge DT fan since I&W, and even listened to Winter Rose before DT. When Portnoy left, we became very skeptical of the writing power of DT, because we knew that Portnoy had huge creativity. But when they released DOT and AVFTTOTW, our perception of the new DT took a 180 turn. I still think to this day, that writing-wise and technique-wise, Mangini is a more well-rounded drummer. He might not be everybody's can of beans, but I love him, and I'm looking forward to listening to his solo stuff.
I'm not super familiar with Dream Theater but I've always gotten a really self-serving pretentious vibe from them. I might just be typecasting them as a bunch of nerds who met at music school, but I get the impression they are more concerned with impressing people than making art.
For all the metallica fans out there you can look up videos of dream theater covering Metallica songs. They absolutely nail them, it's clear as day Metallica had a huge influence on them
Just another bash on james video and comments.,.,their just not a 4/4 band so I don't know what you're talking about there. James is the face of DT and always will be. He was perfectly tailored for the band. I assume that before the other members picked James to be their front man they auditioned several singers at yet for some reason these virtuoso musicians picked the shittiest singer they could find to represent there music.
It took me a long time to enjoy Dream Theater. Why? Hmmm... I wonder. Labrie's vocals. When I listened to Metropolis Pt 2 it all clicked. Regardless vocals, which I've come to tolerate- and even occasionally really enjoy, the instrumentation is so amazing it doesn't matter. And then I heard Train of Thought. Wow! Some really well written and heartfelt lyrics helps the vocals to be more palatable as well. Second favorite metal band, after Metallica of course.
I've tried a lot to like them, but for the most part this band just lacks seasoning, for my ears. I liked some riffs here, some solos there, but overrall they just sound like "meh" to me.
The vocals have always been my problem with DT. I'm just not a fan of his delivery. He's a great singer, but much like Myles Kennedy, I just don't like him.
OK, here we go: Images and Words is their best album - the band didn't release a good album in decades. Kevin Moore was by far the best musician ever to play in Dream Theater.
bro what are you saying. Kevin Moore was barely a musician compared to the other members, he was a keyboardist unlike Jordan Rudess. Really John Mike and Jordan was by far the best trio the band had and wrote their most beautiful music with that lineup. Scenes from a memory, Six Degrees of Inner turbulence, Systematic Chaos, Octavarium. Kevin moore only accented and was a very good accent but he never couldve written a song like Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence or consistently practically single handedly written such a beautiful song like disappear or the ministry of lost souls, vacant etc.
I find them musically boring (seriously), despite their high level of musicianship and skills. Their vocalists are by far the weakest part of the band.
Just in time for MP's return
