Bass player (John Myung) & guitarist (John Petrucci) are TRUE original members. Lead Singer (James LaBrie) came on board after their first album. Basically he is an original player. Their keyboard player ( Jordan Rudress) has been on board since the mid 90's is their 3rd keyboard player and is absolutely fantastic. Their drummer Mike Mangini is the last to come on board & is one of the top 5 drummers in the world. Problem is for many of their fans is he is he replaced probably the greatest drummer EVER in Mike Portnoy. Portnoy to many was the heart & soul of Dream Theater.
To your question at 14:00 mark, The former drummer Mike Portnoy is pretty much in the top 5 of drummers alive today. Also he was a creative force in terms of lyrics and concepts of albums. The current drummer Mangini while very good musically, is less of a creative force within the band. Post 2011, lot of the songs & albums have had their guitarist Petrucci driving the lyrical themes and concepts. That being said, Mangini is no slouch. He taught for about 6 years Berkelee college of music (where the band originally formed in 85) before joining the band (prior to which he has had extensive experience playing with a multitude of groups and also at one point held the speed drumming record for about 1200 beats per minute). I don't want to start a Portnoy vs Mangini fan thread here, but if you watch the Drummer auditions videos online, you will know more as to why the band chose him to replace Portnoy
These guys are top tier musicians at their respective instruments. Obviously they have long instrumental sections and some shredding sections which turn a lot of people off, but they're very diverse and have many melodic songs/solos. They pretty much span from super technical/heavy songs to slow, melodic and borderline poppy songs. The two you've done so far are in the "new" era. The drummer in the video joined the band in 2011 and this song is off the first album he was on. The other song is from their most recent album in 2019. Definitely recommend checking out some of their older stuff since most will agree it's their best material. Tried to separate the categories depending on what you want to listen to. Generally the only good live versions are from this fourth wall concert, Budokan, or from the Boston Opera House. All the others are mixed poorly or weren't recorded for DVD purposes and the quality is bad. Heavy: Honor Thy Father This Dying Soul The Dark Eternal Night The Mirror Panic Attack Technical: Dance of Eternity Metropolis Part 1 Erotomania Melodic/moodier: Hollow Years (Live at Budokan version) The Best of Times Another Day All of the above: The Glass Prison Pull Me Under As I Am Home A Nightmare To Remember Epics (15+ minutes) A Change of Seasons Octavarium Illumination Theory Count of Tuscany Pick your poison
Mike the drummer not original joined in 2011 I think James the singer wasn’t original either but he came in the band in 91’ and Jordan the keyboard player joined in 99’
check whole LTE albums nad John Petrucci solo albums , pick your fav and make video plz , also haw to reviw a change of seasons by dt and the glass prison !! plz
21:20 was this on purpose? =) the original name of the band was Majesty, also the singer definitely breaks out a tambourine now and then so you were spot on
Bassist and Guitarist are only original members. Singer was replaced before their second album long ago. This is their 3rd keyboardist, and the drummer joined about 10 years ago.
James goes behind Petrucci’s speaker cabinets when not needed on stage

It's all the same song. Breaking all Illusions is the song name, and Breaking the Fourth Wall is the live tour name. But it's common to find some of the longer pieces from Dream Theater coming in "movements" like classic music, since prog rock is very different in structure to conventional songs... there is no "verse-chorus-verse-breakdown-chorus" structure like in most of the music today. Progressive normally never repeats the same phase of a song, but it evolves it by making a crescendo till they bring you to the climax of the song and then down to the end. They will reuse some "patterns" used in another parts but changed, maybe in instruments, maybe in tone or speed. A perfect example of this is the song "Illumination Theory" from this same tour. You can find it live as well in UA-cam and there's even one including the lyrics (where you will be able to see as well the names of the "movements" in the song). There is a lyrics video as well of this one you just reviewed ;) Hope it helps! PS: If you want to see the (for me) best Dream Theater has done in their entire life, check the album "Metropolis PT 2: Scenes from a Memory". It's a "concept" album (something very common in progressive as well (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Concept_album) where all the songs are linked together with a common topic or history that is carried from one song to another to explain a whole tale or history... If you can listen to it with the lyrics by your side, even better... this way you can see the history behind and see how they model their music according to the history itself.
I totally agree. Even though I love some other DT albums, I think Metropolis PT 2 is the peak of their career. It is a whole impressive musical adventure. I recommend it hands down.
The original members of them left are the Guitar & Bass player man. They both form the band on the Boston's Berklee music school with the drummer they met there, which left the band on 2010. As the vocal and keyboard player changes too since the first line up. The current vocalist once did a Got Talent audition back then before joined the band. The keyboard player is a Julliard music school alumni. And the current drummer is once a professor on the Berklee before He joined the band. Great musicians. Vocal : James Labrie Guitar : John Petrucci Bass : John Myung Keyboard : Jordan Rudess Drum : Mike Mangini
I see a reaction video to my favourite band I click like and subscribe! It is nice to see you giving them a go as progressive metal is not the easiest genre to get into. However I like to think that subsequent listens reveals the beauty and artistry of the music. I suggest As I Am for an example of their heavier side or Untethered Angel for their more straight forward side. I would also suggest checking outside a band called Nightwish. Within the metal universe they are one of the most reacted to groups on UA-cam and the go to song of choice is Ghost Love Score Live at Wacken 2013.
I suggest you react to their Instrumental song "The dance of eternity live" which has a 108 time signature changes! Its quite overwhelming at first listen.. Will be waiting! The rest ill leave it to you😂 will you be shocked? 😲
I always look for Dream Theater reactions. Big fan for 21 years here. Each new reaction is a way to listen to them in a new perspective. Thanks! PS>Listen to Liquid Tension Experiment too (Dream Theater side project) Especially When the Water breaks. You will love it.
the drummer, Mike Mangini broke the world record in 2005 for World's Fastest Drummer by being the first drummer to break 1,200 single drum strokes in 60 seconds (1,203)
how am I supposed to know if its a solo if its my first time hearing it lol. I wont do it again tho.. promise haha. Thanks for watching and for the feedback.
Dream Theater has been my absolute favorite band since I was in High School in the 90s. Its crazy been going along for the ride over these almost 30 years! Now I'm really enjoying watching the discovery people are having with the band here with the reactions. Your reaction on Pale Blue dot made me watch this one. I am so excited to go watch your experience, learning who the greatest band in the world is... Over the upcoming weeks, will have lots of watching your videos, can't wait!!
Most talented band in the history of rock. Thanks so much for showing this. Boy did you nail this PERFECTLY. Bassist is UNREAL ,the ENTIRE band is an ALL STAR TEAM. Dream Theater is INCREDIBLE!!! Fantastic job!! Thank you
Mike Mangini was DT’s first pick for auditions after Portnoy left. He would have been in the top 3 rock drummers with Neil Peart and Mike Portnoy. They only auditioned 4 drummers
Hi there from Brazil!. They are all among the most technical and skilled. If possible, you should react to Dream Theater - Illumination Theory ( Live From The Boston Opera House ).A masterpiece. It is difficult to describe the musicality and perfect timing an transitions in it.
You asked where the singer goes during the song. He has a little tent set up behind the guitar cabinets. This band, as you noticed, are very instrumental heavy in their songs. He just chills in his little tent area until it's his time to sing for 20 seconds of a 30 minute song lol. Great video, I would suggest something like Octavarium. It's long as hell with lots of changes, but it's a truly beautiful song.
Thanks for the reaction. DT is a life experience. You won't regret it. I've been a fan since '92. So much to explore. I look forward to seeing more reactions.
The bass player is the same age as these guys as far as I know. The drummer was replaced 10 years ago but he’s just as good as the original in my opinion and the keyboard player yes I believe the third one they had. Their first album was when they were called majesty and they had a different singer but James has been with them ever since
Not looking at the base player to see if he was on time, looking at him just to get a little personality into it but he is very serious into what he does. But I understand trying to make sense of all of this greatness
The drummer is very technical and fast (held the single stroke roll record for a long time if he doesn't still hold it.) Taught at Berkley. He is a beast, but not as emotive as the original drummer Mike Portnoy, even if he is higher in skill level.
I don't know what you're talking about concerning having no emotion factor. You should say that THEY HAVE DIFFERENT WAY OF DELIVERY OF EMOTIONS. *mic drop
@@smittycal I suggested a song that was not reacted so much plus it's a very different sound by them. It also comes from one of the most acclaimed concept albums of entire metal.
Hi Marvin Most of their songs are long. Try Illumination Theory (Live from the Boston Opera house) It's about 19 minutes long and is less technical and shows their versatility. Excellent song. Thanks and keep it up. The guitarist and the bassist are the only original members. The singer came on in the early 90's, the keyboardist came on in the late nineties and the drummer came on in 2011. All these musicians rank near the top of their classes. John Petrucci-guitar, John Myung-bass, Jordan Rudess - keys, and Mike Mangini drums. Petrucci, Myung and their 1st Drummer Mike Portnoy met at Berklee in Boston and all quit to form this band. Singer is James La Brie.
Mike Portnoy is a legend in drumming and when they switched with Mike Mangini I was worried since I didn't know him... but he's top notch as well!! (well what can you expect, the level for the auditions wouldn't be for anyone)

The original members met at Berkeley school of music in Boston I believe!

Guitarist just dropped a solo album with the original drummer playing the drums for him. John Petrucci - Terminal Velocity (Total Ear Candy!)
The most talented people in the most talented band. Please never stop the video during a solo again.. you watch and enjoy :D
John Petrucci guitarist. John Myung bass, Jordan Rudess keyboard, James LaBrie vocals, Mike Mangini drums.
one of my fave solos!
”In awe of your MAJESTY” nice call back ;)
Btw, the guitar and bass hookup is showmanship. They could play it from the green room
As far as "technical ability", this drummer Mike Mangini, is about as good as anyone can be.
As far as Dream Theater drummers go, I like Mike better than Mike.
Lmao
Basist same age as guitarist. Born 1967. New drummer 11 years ago.

Liquid tension experiment!
I love James LaBrie's voice also!
Audio and video seemed to be out of sync near the end...
I read that Jordan was accepted at Julliard at age 9 as a piano prodigy
In the hierarchy of drummers, he stacks way high.
Common criticism is he's too good to play nice. I'm not on that
Bassist and Guitarist are only original members. Singer was replaced before their second album long ago. This is their 3rd keyboardist, and the drummer joined about 10 years ago.

John Myung, the bassist, looks youthful probably because of Asian genes. He doesn't look that much different since the 90s
And he's a fucking beast!!! Always was, always will...
