      Good info on the video I was looking for something like that, it was nice if you could also explain what function had each antenna from each gen, also I was wondering if this should also fit Evoque models, I got the same low-level antenna that you upgraded in the video.

    Please make one with the defenders Quality Camera integratet for the L405. MY L405 Camrea sits next tot he plate and gets dirty in no time, while the new defenders camera on the roof stays clean for very long

    Looking forward to seeing what you can produce with the new camera, I don't suppose you ordered some clip on radio microphones to go with it? Would make the sound quality a bit more consistent. Not a complaint mind, more an observation 😀

    My L405 model just arrived to Canada in lighting fast time. Thank you. Question I have is; Silcone was supplied within the box and the instructions referred back to this video. But no Silcone shown here. Any suggestions on application of the sealant/adhesive? I would think a thin bead around the inner edge of the dummy fin before clipping it would be the cleanest on or run a bead after its clipped on around the fin? or both? Thanks in advance.

      Hi - some silicone around the sides of the original roof antenna will ensure extra grip. Not too much as you do not want excess showing at the bottom.
      Any excess silicone can be removed with baby wipes !

    Hi how i can remuve the original antenna off l494. Thx

    The simple way to test if something is going to affect RF performance is to put it in the microwave for 30 seconds, if it gets warm then it's absorbing RF and will affect the performance. If it doesn't, then it's "transparent" to the RF. Microwaves are using RF to heat food, really.
    The square thing which is ceramic is the GPS antenna. The DVB antennas for the TV are in the side windows on an L322, it's unlikely they're in the top pod. I think the other antennas on top won't be GSM any more as most modern cars just have a bluetooth connection to the phone - unless the L405 has it's own internet connection, not sure... I'm curious about whether there's any spare antennas exposed on those roof pods as I'd like to upgrade mine and add in some additional antennas (868mhz for LoraWan and 433mhz for home automation reasons, opening the gate etc).
    Are the connectors all interchangeable? ie: could I swap an L322 roof pod for an L405 and not have to swap any of the wiring?

      Hi - interesting and I get the impression you are an RF engineer ! I think there may be a wifi antenna. The antenna use FAKRA connector and there a series of colour coded FAKRA connectors - you cannot plug a BLUE plug into a yellow socket etc.. needs to be blue into blue. the 433mhz transmitters are available in the rear view mirror - these have some buttons underneath and are used on the Evoque / L405 / L494
      What is LoraWan - I need to google that !

    • @JohnBaxendale
      @JohnBaxendale 3 роки тому

      @@L663 Far from it, just an enthusiastic amateur who likes to play around! The 433mhz in the mirror is similar to what I want to do, but I'd like to get an antenna up on the roof for some extra range (basically the gate takes a few minutes to open, so I need to trigger it from quite a distance away).
      LoraWan is a very low power but long range wireless system, which can be used for free globally and get messages back to the internet, for my usage, I'll be using it for a discreet tracker type system, which hopefully would be a bit more unknown to any criminal types and hence, less likely to be found and removed :)
      Wifi seems an odd thing to have on a roof pod as most usage for Wifi would presumably come from inside the car, so I'd expect to see the Wifi antenna internal to the vehicle. When you consider the car body is essentially a big faraday cage, any antenna for external communications (GPS, TV/Radio, GSM etc) is much better placed externally and anything for use inside the car (Bluetooth for phone, Wifi for data) is better inside the car.
      There's obviously some other considerations coming into it though, so for example the 433mhz for garage door opening is generally fine in the front mirror as it's conveniently placed and usually has line of sight to the garage door - so it's not too much of a compromise.
      The other antennas these cars seem to have lots of is the antenna for the keyfob, as far as I can tell there's a lot of these placed around the car, which is probably needed to know when the key is inside the car (to allow starting) or whether it's outside of the car (to know not to let the engine start). I've had problems digging up any details to confirm exactly what's in the roof pod though and some of the modules are difficult to identify, the fact they all have similar looking FAKRA's on them doesn't help matters, but good tip with the colour coding that will help me trace the different cables! :)

    A tip from the top…
    GSM ended with 2G as I understand it. 3G 4G and the new 5G are not GSM standards. I could be wrong but I really don't think those aerials are GSM. How many people still run 2G? I only know of one of my employees who refuses to move from just a voice mobile phone which isn't 3G compatible. I'm amazed it can still transmit.

      I should ask the boss about these things.... she used to work for Motorola on mobile comms base station design / production.

    • @JohnBaxendale
      @JohnBaxendale 3 роки тому

      The original non-digital mobile phone systems used 150mhz or so, then with the move to "2G" or GSM which was digital, they moved to freququencies around 800mhz (I think from 700 to 900 or so) and that's where it's stayed pretty much right up to 4G. 5G systems will still use some of those frequencies but also add in higher frequencies in the 2.5Ghz range (above the frequency of even wifi).
