Yeah. It never a flop. Brits television shows, notorious for short seasons and episodes. Extremely long seasons shows like Dr. Who is a rare feat. Unless it's a soap. For a comedy show. On average 3 or 4 seasons long is about right. Nevermind how popular the show is. WatchMojo unfortunately viewing it from the American perspective. When tv shows can run for 6 seasons on average, and popular sitcom can run like forever. Or at least it used to prior the streaming era.
Yeah, Spaced is not a flop though? It's often held up as one of the greatest British sitcoms ever made and basically launched the careers of Simon Pegg, Nick Frost and Edgar Wright! You wouldn't have had Shaun of the Dead or Hot Fuzz without Spaced.
And knowing British television quirks. Long lasting shows like Dr. Who is an extremely rare creature with dozens of seasons, and still counting. Only soap shows run matching out. 3-4 seasons long shows are the average spans over there. So Spaced seasons is about right.
@@manchesterunitedno7 Yeah, in England we don't even refer to them as 'seasons', we refer to them as 'series', and they're usually only 6 half-hour long episodes, rather than 20-odd, near hour long episodes. I always thought 'seasons' were labelled as such because they drag on for so long that the seasons in real life change multiple times before the end of one lol. 2 series is the usual for British sitcoms, but occasionally 3 or 4 are made. Spaced only had 2 series, Fawlty Towers only had 2 series, The UK Office only had 2 series, The Young Ones had 2, but then things like Bottom and Mighty Boosh had 3. Monty Python and The Fast Show got 4, but they are more sketch comedy shows rather than sitcoms.
Didn't realise Freakazoid was a flop. Loved it when it aired and honestly thought that when it was airing that it was as popular as the other shows from the same team as it seems to be now.
SPACED! Really? British series don’t need to have 20 seasons. Father Ted 3, black books 3 spaced 2 green wing 2. yet just these 4 are a who’s who of British comedy.
Freaks and Geeks deserves a legacy greater than its 12 episodes. 18 were planned, but the creators canned the last six because they couldn’t agree with NBC and because its episode release dates were unpredictable.
I was in my teens when Freakazoid was on. My girlfriend at the time came over and said "why are you watching this stupid show" but she watched it anyway. After about 3 weeks she came over and I asked what she wanted to do. She said "Let's watch Freakazoid!" lol The show is great.
I had never heard of Brisco County Jr. until my dad bought the DVD set of the whole show. Now it's a favorite. I love the jokes about looking for the next big thing in technology or whatever and having little nods like a boy named Duncan giving somebody a donut.
Yeah I love it too and apparently, people at Fox said ratings were decent and the show should have been renewed. Only part I didn’t like was Kelly Rutherford and I’m not the only one.
Sadly I've never seen any of these shows and I grew up in the '90s. I was always glued to Nickelodeon and then when it was 6:00 I would go to UPN to watch reruns of The Simpsons. I'd also watch the new Star Trek shows that were out at the time as well as reruns. Definitely a lot of stuff I missed out on
Sports Night deserved so much more. It was such an incredible show. ABC just didn't know what it had with it. Thankfully we got the West Wing by Sorkin, which NBC definitely knew what to do with.
Thank you for the update, WatchMojo..!! I thought 'Parker Lewis' (1990) was a cool show to watch. I think the show only lasted for 3 seasons. In 2000s, there was a show called 'Dead Like Me' (2003) that was pretty cool to watch, but only lasted for 2 seasons. :(
@@dakkuri1 going to be honest, I’ve never watched twilight zone but if it is like it, I wouldn’t call it a knock off. More like a kid version. Like how Goosebump’s Slappy, is a kid version of Chucky.
@@renatoandwill That's not even slightly true. This was never intended for commercial success, as many comedies British telly puts out aren't, they're aimed at niche audiences and they can do that because they're low cost in almost every way. Spaced was highly successful with the niche aka 'cult' audience it aimed at, whilst also exceeding that and gaining popularity outside of that target audience.
Some of these are so obvious. Like freaks and geeks for SURE. Or sports night … criminal how short they got cut. But… entries like the critic (which I embarrassingly forgot that show and how funny it was).. but EERIE INDIANA !!! Omg that was the best show that other kids weren’t watching ! So stoked to see it here!
I have Freaks and Geeks on a DVD I bought when Hollywood Video went out of business. Freaks and Geeks and My So Called Life were essential teen shows!! They definitely deserve a rewatch.
Not sure Spaced would qualify as a flop. That said, if you haven't watched it, do. Amazing ensemble cast. Dry as a bone humour, amazing direction, brilliant slow burn storytelling, and that episode in the nightclub is just fantastic.
This was a list of some of my fondest memories of the 90s. I own box sets of Freakazoid, Spaced, Sports Night, and The Adventures of Brisco County Jr. I still want to rewatch Eerie, Indiana and The Critic. If you do one of these for the 2000s Freakylinks and Titus better be on that list.
In the late 80’s through the mid 90’s there was definitely a great sketch comedy wave. The State and the Ben Stiller show were definitely big contributors to that era.

"Brisco County" was a true gem. It was available on DVD Netflix. When I had that account I was so glad to have seen it. I'm not sure if you can stream it anywhere.
Kirk is a The WB sitcom from the 90s, that bombed after two years, it was ahead of its time, second is All-American Girl starring Margaret Cho lasted for one season and was ahead of its time, honorable mention The Net the TV adaption of the 1995 movie, never got a second season, Eerie Indiana the NBC television series that was ahead of its time, Models Inc. that ill-fated spinoff that bombed after one season.
The State actually tanked itself (looking right at you Porcupine Race Track) because a lot of the core group was ready to go on to different creative ventures. SPACED was on for three seasons, which in British TV terms is a "full run" for most of their television shows.
Freaks and Geeks and My So Called Life. And, no, I remember My So Called Life was only one season and then cancelled and how heartbroken I was that it wasn’t renewed.
Another 90's show that should b watched is Animorphs. Based on the book series, 5 high school kids r given the ability to transform into animals, and telepathiclly talk to each other when in beast form, even if the others aren't. To stop an alien invasion. If that show gets rebooted, it better b epic and good. With an opening like in the 90's and 2000's. I miss those, now its just the title appearing, unless the series r that old and still going (ex. NCIS and Law & Order).
"Action!" starring Jay Mohr was criminally overlooked, but understandable as Hollywood hates TV or movies that make fun of Hollywood. tons of guest appearances by Keanu Reeves, Sandra Bullock and others as themselves, it was merciless in its take on horrible studio execs and stab-in-the-back culture.
Brimstone and Opposite Sex. Outside of the decades constraints Colony definitely needs at least two more seasons to wrap things up and The Orville could continue.

Freakazoid was a flop, sure, but the zaniness of the show never lacked, especially the protagonist himself. Oh, yeah. I enjoyed The Critic as well. Jay Sherman had to be a one-man wrecking crew with his outlandish criticism of every freaking movie. It was a riot!
Freakazoid! should've been bigger than it was. 2 seasons is too short for any series. My sister and I used to laugh so hard at this show! Some of these I haven't heard of, like Sports Night, but then again, I'm not a big sports fan. Some of these I didn't even watch, like Freaks and Geeks. Eerie, Indiana I haven't seen, but it definitely gave off Goosebumps or Are You Afraid of the Dark vibes, I can tell. I don't remember watching My So-Called Life, but I have seen Claire Danes in other things, and she's pretty talented. I liked her performance in Shop Girl, which was based off of a novella, written by Steve Martin, who also starred in the movie, which pretty much followed the book. Her performance in Temple Grandin was amazing (Emmy winner!). As a woman on the Autism Spectrum, I found the movie to be pretty inspiring. Does anyone remember Herman's Head? For a sitcom, it was pretty unconventional. Definitely predated Inside Out by about 30 years! Airport sitcoms aren't discussed anymore, either, like Wings, or The Crew. Anyone remember those? He was a starring role there and went on to have prominent spots in other shows like Bones and has written major features including an enjoyable, let alone watchable, Dungeon & Dragons film -an epic feat no one thought possible.
