      It's actually the same thing Neil Gaiman talked about in an interview: The method of sitting down and allowing yourself ONLY to either do nothing or start working.
      As he put it, "staring out of the window becomes boring after a while, and ideas start coming"

      When you think about it, all those workout/walk/run advices are basically that aswell. Do something that let your brain free to think, free from the overstimulation of whatever media you'd isten to or watch "to take a break" and it will start thinking on the solutions. It's just like how some people "only have ideas when they wake up from sleeping" like if they miraculously had an inspiration. No, it's just that for most of them it's the only time they allow themselves to give some free space to their brain and "do nothing", so of course they start thinking while getting asleep and resume thinking when they wake up.

    I feel like for a lot of us low motivation is not about energy levels, laziness or lack of inspiration but because of fear. The act of drawing poses so many microscopic choices and choosing incorrectly could end in failure. Oftentimes I would have a colored thumbnail sketch I had decided on but I would immediately start procrastinating when I had to begin the "final" piece. A useful trick I found when I was afraid of drawing was to create a new layer called "Test Layer" or "Attempt 1" and just draw on that while giving myself no pressure to make anything good. Since quality no longer mattered, there was no longer any reason to be afraid. Sometimes I would delete it and that would be fine but more often than not I would end up renaming that layer to "sketch", and there wouldn't even be an attempt 2.

    My mentor would kill me for admitting this, but I actually like not feeling motivated all the time. I don't like the idea of becoming a conveyor belt who does nothing but draw, I want to watch movies on occasion and go out for some coffee bread, or just lean back and listen to the rain falling on the roof. I struggle through it, but I feel good knowing my body simply won't let me become that kind of person who locks himself up and never does anything but work.

      I think yours is a good attitude to have though. I really despise how people idolize someone who does nothing but sit alone all day, usually at the cost of their mental and physical health, have no friends, never see their family, just to produce art. Then they go on about how they would never be this good at art if they never destroyed their wrist and have carpal tunnel syndrome.
      These people generally have very bad social skills too even if their art is amazing. I think its a good way to produce really generic content if you never go outside or live some kind of life beyond just drawing.
      I feel like really interesting characters and stories are usually based upon someones life experience, and if someones life experience is doing nothing but being an anti social hermit, how interesting of content can they possibly produce.

    • @BloodyGir7
      @BloodyGir7 5 років тому +4

      I think it depends on what each person enjoys doing. If a person enjoys drawing a lot. Then go ahead. Work on your art all the time you want. But if for you there are more things you want to invest your time on and you can do it go ahead too. But I don't see anything wrong with both ways to do things. It's more about how each person is

    • @Merahki3863

      As you said it complicates it, your situation is unique to you and some generic advice intended to try and be relevant to a variety of situations is unlikely to be effective. Ultimately it's a trial and error thing, you have to find a solution that suits you. Generally solutions fall into 3 approaches though.
      Approach 1: change your environment. Generally something in your environment is causing your mood to constantly flatline. Lets say you have a massive crush on your best friend, but theyre in a relationship. You hang out and chat as much as possible, you stare at pics with the 2 of you together at night. You need to either become a couple or get them out of your life. Naturally not an easy decision but a necissary one.
      Approach 2: change your perception. Whether you see a glass as half empty, half full or full of crap, fundamentally they're all describing the same thing, but evoking a different feeling. Some people have everything but appreciate nothing, while others have nothing and appreciate everything. The real difference between those people isn't personality but habit. They've refined their viewpoints over a lifetime and now automatically have those thoughts. This applies to the things you can't change, like being disfigured, losing a loved one or your art not getting the recognition you want.
      Approach 3: change your biology. Some people have abnormalities which affects their ability to function correctly. Having depression is functional when there is a cause as it's part of your design. You're not mean't to be overjoyed when you lose an arm. This could be related to your nutrition, medication and drug abuse, other illnesses. So check your nutrition, side effects of drugs, take blood tests, brain scans to rule out abnormalities.

      Working on 2-3 projects works great for me. Only caveat I would add is not to have too many unfinished projects, 'cause then you can become overwhelmed or feel uninspired to finish them. I find it works best when you keep things fresh; don't leave an art piece standing too long, come back to it often. As long as some progress is made often, then personally it keeps me motivated to continue and finish those pieces.

    Something I didn't hear anyone talk about is that it can be helpful to find out WHY you're de-motivated or discouraged. I've found that when I'm disinterested in a project it's usually one of three reasons 1) I'm stressed out about some other part of my life, in which case the solution is often to solve that other problem first. If I can't solve that problem, it can be helpful to by kind to myself by acknowledging that I'm just going to be less productive for a little while, and that's okay (if I've built it into my schedule) 2) The rest of my life has been too busy, and I'm really tired, in which case the best solution is to take some time to be very still and very quiet, without trying to distract myself with more activity 3) The problem is intimidating, in which case I try to fond some small part of it that I can actually do. Just start with the framework, or just start organizing the desk, or just start with the obvious thing, and then it becomes easier to see the problem/project as lots of smaller pieces that are less intimidating.... or can become less intimidating as you get each on finished.

    I think Eliza has it right on, and extra props to her for manning her table at a con with a new baby! She's absolutely right, though: if you want to draw for a living, you have to clock in, draw, and clock out. You have to just do it, whether or not you're inspired...you'll get inspired once you get the pencil moving. Or sometimes, you won't, and you'll end up creating something that you won't want to show anyone, and that's okay. The important thing is that you showed up and did some work.

    I haven't drawn a picture in 4 years and just picked it up a couple days ago. How I keep my motivation to get back to my past level and continue to rise is not comparing my art to other people and drawing for myself. I don't follow artist on Instagram and I only watch youtube videos of drawing for educational purposes. When I went to art school, it was a real cut-throat industry and it killed my passion for drawing, so when I draw a picture, I really don't share it and if somebody comes across it and likes it, it's a bonus. I'm glad I got back into drawing.

    Setting yourself for a better tomorrow is a way I'd like to think of when I'm trying to get work done. The more I get done today, the more ahead I'll be tomorrow. The more work I put off, the more "debt" I'll accumulate. "Debt" being the consequences I'll have to face for not working, be it a lack of reward, grinding time, losing out on potential work, or not growing as an artist. I believe in rewards though, so once the task is complete I give myself time to do whatever I want. Be it a day trip downtown, a night of gaming or drawing something I actually wanna do.

    It seems like most of the advice is aimed at the problems of feeling burned out because you’ve gotten passed the point where the subject was novel, or just generally tired or exertion avoidant, and the solutions mostly boil down to either taking a break, switching projects, or powering through because your obligations don’t allow you the luxury to procrastinate. This is all good, but I think it would also be nice to hear some advice more specifically aimed at people between the levels of student and professional for when you’re trying to decide on what to commit a lot of time to and all your choices feel equally arbitrary.
    For example, one thing I like to do sometimes to get past choice paralysis is to make a word grid, something like a large Punnett square with a list of random words across the top and down the left side, and then I pick a square and have to draw something that combines the two words for that square’s row and column. Really there isn’t necessarily a reason you’d need to make the grid, you could get to random words from anywhere, but I like the grid as it makes it feel more like a game with. Another thing you could do if you have a friend is play a game of exquisite corpse and afterwards try to draw a fully fleshed out rendering of the resulting chimera.

    I struggle a lot with it. One of the things that motivate and inspire me so much is learning. Watch a tutorial or a course from a good artist, about a topic that interest me and wich porpose exercises or/and a final project. For example some years ago I had not any idea about 3D, and I have watch a lot of tutorials and courses about it, now I know quite a bit about it and I ended with multiple finished projects. Trying different ways to make images is very inspiring to me, like 3D, photobash, custom shapes, line drawing... Some thing that I want to start making more is reading, I guess it is a good inspiration because while you do it, a lot of images comes to your mind, thats so good for visual artists like us.

      @Atlas Ryan Man its rough when illness & pain effects you. I have psoriatic arthritis, which affects everything from my spine to my hands, It also makes you fatigued which zaps your energy too & the medication fucks with your head.. My career in Graffiti stopped. I can't physically do it no more. But I've begun painting in Oil, I sketch every day too. I also began making underground electronic house-Techno when I lack motivation in logic pro X. Lastly joining life drawing/painting classes add Motivation, & looking at other artists work too.

      @Vinicius Barros and @Atlas Ryan This may not help but I tried to start back drawing early last year but horrible pain from tendinitis forced me to stop. I had given up but I started back a few months ago and realized the cause was just overall bad ergonomics at work (software dev.) and home. Using splints at night for wrist and elbow and having a decent set up at work and home, I can now draw for a few hours a day without pain. Hopefully it'll continue to improve.

    Bobby Chiu had something there. Especially for beginner artists, it’s the voices in your head that drain your motivation and make you give up. You have to learn how to tune those negative thoughts and feelings out so you can maintain focus and keep going, even when Netflix and your couch seem much more appealing.

    Here is the thing, when you are a young artist training to maybe make a life from your art you struggle with motivation because it feels less about making something you like and more about like take a really difficult and important test. For me that's is the where lives the frustration. So, asking a bunch of pros how they tackle motivation problems is kinda pointless because most of them already have established jobs and lives. The pressure of taking this test does not applies anymore to them.

    • @NihongoWakannai
      @NihongoWakannai 5 років тому +2

      Yeah, this is true. For a student, not improving and doing better than before is a failure. Whilst for a pro, if they do the same art it's fine, they still get paid. It's not ideal, but for them it's not a complete failure just to do something average.

    I'm surprised only one person said looking at art that inspires them. When I feel unmotivated, I get the juices and inspiration pumping by looking at artist's works that fascinate me and make me want to draw. Looking at character designs really helps too. They make me want to take my favourite parts of a bunch of different characters and create a whole new one.

    I used to struggle hard with motivation when I first started drawing (5+ years ago). When the drawings would never come out like I wanted them to. Nothing made sense and it was difficult. I was too hard on myself. I was comparing myself to artists who had been drawing for years. I recently had a big break through where I began to learn the fundamentals and it’s been hard to not be motivated since. Now I feel like there is not enough time in the day to draw as much as I want and I get so excited and the ideas are flowing like a river

    I've been struggling with my own blocks which motivates me to seek ways to overcome them. Recently I started the book by Barbara Oakley "A mind for numbers". Even though in can seem contreintuitive (as it speaks about her experience switching from "math-phobia" to "math-filia") but i see the resemblance between the advices given by many artists in this video and the ones the author describes in her book introducing us to FOCUSED and DIFFUSE MODES.
    As a way to overcome the straggle with one piece the artist switches his/her activity (go runing, take a shower, or even work on a different piece that inspires them) and then the solution to the first comes to them like if by magic. It's exactly like switching from focused mode to diffused mode that author describes very well in the book I mentioned earlier. It's targeted to a wide audience and really narrows down to efficiently solve problems and learning how to learn. I recommend it!
    BTW love your chanel! Greetings from Spain :)

    I don't remember who it was who said this line but i remember hearing once someone say the the best authors read more books than they write. Whenever you feel as though you lack motivation it's best to actually sit down and read comics, sometimes you might want to analyze how they do specific things, but it's best to remind yourself why you're doing this and it's for the love of the art

    Well...I have a mental illness that impairs concentration. if I can't concentrate, I get discouraged, if I get discouraged, I lose motivation and it can be a vicious cycle. Not being in charge of one's environment can also be an issue... Most of the time, though, I am thinking about how much time and energy I have devoted to my projects and that it would be a waste not to share what I was finally able to come up with. I also agree with the shower and music thing. Even if all I accomplish is some scribbling, at least pencil touched paper or stylus touched tablet.

    If I struggle with motivation I first try to identify the reason to why I feel unmotivated. Usually it is a fear of failure and/or lack of confidence. Then I either:
    1. Watch Prokos "Asking Pros", because it reminds me that even the pros struggle with the same kinds of things even the non-pros are struggling with.
    2. Look at my old art and realize that I have become so much better since then, and that motivates and inspires me to keep going.
    3. Look at art that inspires me and makes me feel "Wow! I want to be that fucking awesome too!" and that sets me off to work immediately. Before, that had the pposite effect on me, because I felt like I could never become that good. But something has changed and now I KNOW I can become that good (or almost, at least).
    I also resonate a lot with what Vanessa Lemen said, since I too was in a pretty bad car accident recently, and that has made me realize that I can die or get maimed or be permanently handicapped at any point. Life is so damn short, so damn fragile and so damn precious because of that, and that is a huge motivator for me.

    Part of it is people lose motivation when they are short on ideas. So you need to continually add ideas to your creative "well" so you can draw from it later when needed. Sean Andrew Murray kinda hints at that. He goes back through his sketchbooks from time to time and finds an old idea that maybe wasn't ready yet, but it inspires him to either pick it up or do something new. So even if you have a half-baked, 10-30% idea, you should still get it out onto a page so it can nudge you later on. People wait for the "perfect idea" too often.

    • @JeezJeezy
      @JeezJeezy 5 років тому

      A fun game you can play is "Yes And" which is typically reserved for brainstorming solutions to business problems. But you can use it creatively like "I am going to draw a bird. Yes, and it's going to have magnificent blue feathers. Yes, and it's going to have horns. Yes, and it's going to be in a desert oasis. Yes, and it's going to have a djinn in its claws." So, you have a Djinn-hunting bird. That could be a cool thing to draw. Maybe it belongs to a bedouin tribe, and they use this magical bird to keep Djinni away. "Yes And" gives you the affirmation that your ideas are good and urges you to add another interesting element.

    Personally I try to surround myself with other artists who are still motivated themselves. I reach out and talk to them, hold conversations about what they're working on, and suddenly my own brain says, "Hey! I wanna do that too!~" and then usually the motivation and excitement returns. It also works the other way around, when my friends and fellow artists reach out and hear the creative things I'm doing, I get to be their motivation to help get them re-excited to create. :)
