I graduated last August, and I recall myself wanting to give up many times, especially when I transitioned to my grad school, and the first semester was a nightmare. I did my degree fully in Korean and as you know, the one year language course is not enough to understand the lectures, and sitting in the class not understanding what your professors say is depressing. I just wanna cheer you up, and please remember as you go forward in the journey that YOU WILL MAKE IT AT THE END no matter what comes your way. I am rooting for you 🎉

Hello I want to ask a question. After your graduation the scholarship ends right so after that we have to work there or we can come to our country to work here, I've seen many scholarships like the govt keep to work there

Hi, yes. You can choose to work there as long as you secure a job. I chose to come back for personal reasons.

Do we need to write our exams in korean language in grad school or gks students write the exams in English or this entirely depends on the professors choice?

Waahh, I admire your courage to speak about your struggles and your honesty for how you truly feel about them 🤍 Not a lot of students, I guess, have these in them. Thanks for showing as a glimpse of how it's like to work in labs. I think my takeaway from your vid is that when you apply to GKS, you have to be prepared to accept that your expectation for your Masters could be very different from reality but always find the beauty in the difference. Glad that you're still fighting there! I hope there's a way that you can still learn a lot and come off better than you were yesterday. Happy for you makakauwi ka rin ng Pinas soon. 화이팅! 🤍

Hey, I'm also a student of nutrition and when i first saw your GKS video, i was so happy to finally see a nutritionist getting GKS, I've took knowledge and motivation from your videos, but when you told me in my comment to find scholarship in another English speaking country i was wondering why , but now i have totally understand,
Don't loose courage, you have come this far, you can also do better than this, and yes you should prioritize your mental health if lab work is draining your energy.
More power to you, good luck

Maybe the anxiety has a lot to do with the fact that you're new and still getting acquainted with the people, culture, language, etc. It's normal to feel insecure in that kind of unfamiliar situation but know that many others are experiencing it and that you are not alone. My unsolicited advice is to reach out to people. Surround yourself with supportive people or people who'd understand your struggle, who would encourage you and help you cope. Befriend previous gks scholars and learn from their experience. Try to make friends with koreans or your korean classmates or find a professor that you're comfortable with, who you can build a good working relationship with and who can be your mentor. Keep in mind though that it might take some time for them to warm up to you but don't be shy to reach out to them. Eat healthy and on time, get enough sleep, establish a daily routine just so your nervous system is running well. Pray or meditate if that helps. Also go back to what motivated you to study in Korea and pursue that degree, and what outcome you were expecting from the experience. I hope that helps you find your purpose again and give you the drive to pursue your goals. I am sure many gks scholars have gone through and survived the same ordeal and have now found their place. You can do it too. Also I heard graduate schools rarely fail students so you can just wing it till you make it (?). Hang in there and good luck!

Hey bro. I have been there, too. If you are still in the first or second semester, my advice would be making friends with the seniors (PhD/Postdocs). Help them in anyways in exchange for lab skills. For instance, ask him/her to teach you how to isolate DNA and you'll help him/her in DNA isolation for the next experiment. One more critical thing is you need to make a solid research plan (do not overcomplicated-if you're a master student) ASAP so that you know what lab techniques should you learn and what chemical reagents your prof needs to buy.
lab life, indeed, is not easy particularly for those with minimum lab skills. It will take up 50% to 75% of your social life and you'll need to master those lab techniques. hang in there, buddy! you can make it. it is just temporary. learning new things are not easy. graduate school is not just about being smart, but it requires communication skills, patience, bargaining, etc. I wish ya good luck, bro!!

I am amazed with your honesty and I really really appreciate. It takes a lot of strength to tell what's on your mind and how you are feeling.
There is no gks scholar who actually tells the reality. I have been in contact with few scholars and trust me barely few of them are ready to talk about the struggles and reality and the regrets and rest are too scared to admit even any good things about south korea let alone bad things.
NIIED makes sure that they select best of the best applicants worthy for the scholarship but unfortunately the potential of those applicants is compromised on a high level because of the lack of opportunities for the international students and untold struggles.
Language for communication in general is not the only barrier. I was a ug applicant and was delusional that even though my lectures would be in korean, I would have the opportunity to take my exams in english. But I was a fool. I spent a lot of time on the application but in the end I had to back out amidst of the various rounds as I realised my exams would be in korean too. Having studied in english throughout my school life and all of a sudden learning technical subjects in korean? Nah
If master students who get the opportunity to learn material in English suffer so much then I am wondering how ug student survives.
You are absolutely right. There are so many applicants who know what subject they want to pursue and have a lot of potential but their liking for South Korea and desire to go there push them into applying for the scholarship and they even get it.
I never wanted to get settled down in SK. I just wanted an exposure. But I had to take a decision of backing out from it. I was even shocked after knowing the drop out rate in gks.
All I wanna say to the future applicants that you all deserve the scholarship because you work hard for it. But is it worth applying for? Gks is not for everyone if you aren't through with all the pros and cons.
And last few words for the video creator, I can't imagine what you are going through. But having come so far and left with an year or so of studies, I would recommend you to do your best and not worry about things which are not in your control. Rather than investing your energy on things which are not in your hands, I recommend you to invest that energy into keeping your mental and physical health good. As you said, what's the point of scholarship if your mental health is compromised? I know there are warnings for not performing academically well in the scholarship and it's indeed a burden. But why not just focus on enjoying a particular subject that you like and work hard only much which gets you through it and actually not stress over being an all rounder. I know it's easier said than done but considering I am unaware of how long you can survive in south korea on your own after gks period ends as the funding will stop, I really want you to enjoy the rest of your time left there.
I wish you all the best. And have safe journey while you go back to your country. Also please keep making videos 😊

I think this should be a lesson or insight to GKS applicants to really research the department or major that they will be applying, especially for STEM majors since its mostly lab for graduate students. and thats the importance of why the BS should be somehow related to your MS.

I hope you can talk more about things like this since it's really eye-opening, from one Filipino to another.
I've read about how lab work in Korea is really tough and can depend a lot on the professor's attitude, causing people to quit, but in denial pa ako before.
I'm in the middle or preparing for the 2024 GKS-G Scholarship and this is one of the things holding me back kasi I'm a fresh MedTech grad, but my planned Master's is in Bioinformatics which I don't have a lot of background on (yet, am planning to study in advance while preparing). I don't have experience in an experimental lab din especially dahil na sa pandemic.
I still want to apply since ang tagal ko nang gusto... sana kayanin niyo po para kayanin ko rin! Hahaha Would love to hear more about your journey.
