TEMP FIX THAT WORKED FOR ME: Unlock the steering column and raise, lower, pull, push the column hard. Did this two times and it worked. This is a temp fix. I'm not sure how long it will last. It got me home.
Thank you so much for this very thorough and informative video. I have a 2011 CC and my vehicle over this past hot summer here in Florida has not started if parked out in the sun for too long. I had a bad cell in my AGM battery and replaced it a couple days ago and thought that was the culprit but yesterday the issue of no start and immobilizer error appeared back on the dash. I was able to start the car after the temp came down inside the car but its getting worse so time to dig in and repair. I have purchased a new steering column lock and because of your video I am going to remove my column and desolder the 2 new mico switches from the new circuit board and resolder them onto my old board as well as use the entire mechanics of the new module as to retain the immobilizer settings so I do not have to visit the dealer to reprogram the key. Again thank you for the awesome video.
IMPORTANT. Super video. I did all this but found nothing wrong with the switch. While putting it back I sprayed the proper contact cleaner unto the push-together connector at the base of the column. And also VERY IMPORTANT, I cleared the alarms that had developed because of this failing to start (due to immobilizer). Result perfect for the past 5 weeks. I waited before posting. So try just the contact cleaner on the opened connector at the immobilizer switch first, AND CLEAR THE ALARM. The fault will come back if the alarm is not cleared. Hope this might help some. Great video, gave me the confidence to do it. Best wishes to UA-cam also, magic.
Hi David, to my memory(4 years now), the connector should be near the bottom of bar going to the steering wheel. So it is low down near the foot pedals. I remove the keys, and wait for all the light to go off (2 to 3 minutes), then try to start again as normal. Usually works.
i have soldered those pins on the board to make sure it makes good contact, for the past 2 weeks the B6 of the costumer car did again not start this 1 time unless u shake the steering a bit, but that is because if you are adjusting the steering wheel back and forth and a chance is going to happen that the pins are not making good contact so the car won't start. well it's ok tho. better then nothing i guess, someday i take the parts out again and do a proper soldering and some tweak so the pins are making good contact with the connector. thanks for the upload! u helped big time here.

This is how I did mine, around 4 years ago. I didn't remove the switches, I eased off the green boot and sprayed contact cleaner in there. A multimeter is essential for testing for implausible readings. It should either be zero Ohms or Infinity. the failure is having a high resistance in the position the switch sits at when operated, not the zero Ohms it should be. It's just gummed up contacts, as per the video. Clean them until it's completely binary. Infinity or zero - nothing else.

Question here.. Passat, same problem, locking and unlocking not working. I got everything out and I tried to measure microswitches. One is reading kiloohms while not pressed, press it and it shows 0.00 Ohm. The bottom one shows infinite ohms resistance just like yours when you have it out of the board. But mine is still there.. after click it shows 0.00 Ohm. Different fault than you have, but I think the board is not able to detect this microswitch if it has infinte resistance "OL" right? Or any other ideas what could be wrong? Thank you @LM Auto Repairs
Hi I can't remember if they are also connected on the other pin... Check that, as they can fail in one of the contacts only, or in both... Hope that helps... Thank you for watching and for your comment!
@@LMAutoRepairs So I checked it properly.. Pin 1 and pin 3 are connected when microswitch is active (pressed) and it shows 0.1 Ohms and it beeps when it is pressed. Pin 1 and middle 2 is open switch and it beeps together. Also shows 0.1 Ohms. When pressed circuit is OL.. For me it looks like microswitches are completely okey..
@@LMAutoRepairs Yes sir. They are Today I tried it in car. It worked and after a few attempts it shows Steering lock problem on maxidot again and stopped working again. I do not know what to do. Microswitches seems to be all right, mechanical part also (checked) and relays probably too. I will try to change them even though it is not necessary..
Are these steering faults same on Porsche cayenne/tourag .... Have one no start . Battery was weak and it activated steering fault . My basic scan tool will not work to clear it... ? Thanks
Hello Liam, hello guys, mine lock doesn’t work when ambient temperature is highter,if I disconnect battery and connect again it work after, can it be relay or switch?! Thanks
Hi Could you advise me, I have the same problem with a wolkswagen passat b6 but only when the weather is hot or the car has been under the sun for a long time.
Here's how I have a problem with the 2007 Passat b6, so the tires on the car were replaced with nozzles, and then he somehow turned on the radio for 5 minutes, and then we washed his engine, because then the car won't start, the diagnostics show a crankshaft sensor error, but that put new and nothing, I really do not know what can happen if someone knows let him help, Could it be that the steering wheel is locked and why would that happen if you can help me
Hi iam having the same error, the problem only started after I got a new key fob programmed to my b6 passat 2006 iam not sure if the new key had caused this issue or the switches need cleaning as in you video,my car wont start or even try too,the car was down for about 7 months..
Great job but if changed the column electrical luck do we need to program the new one on the car againe and do we need to make new coding for the both of remote controls?
+Yervant Khachadorian Hi A new column would most likely need to be programmed... (I never done that...) At second hand column, probably would need to be virginized first... and then programmed... I am saying this with no previous research... so it might be that is not exactly like this...
there is no chance to virginized an used one...no solution available for public... yet only brand new possible ,very simple...all you need is a PIn code, VCDS or similar device and good battery back up/support.
Thank you for the clarification... as I said I never that that... But perhaps you can transfer the data from the old column into the second hand one??....
transfer the data only via swapping both ELMOS(you can NOT read those) mcus from ori into new(for me with brand new in hand, does not make any sense as programming wont take longer then 5mins,once you got a pin code ) and brand new cost only £80 at dealer...only does make sense when, new not available or you have a spur one at your workshop... hope that does make sense
Great video! It helped with one Passat for a while after I changed both microswitchs but still I have the problem when outdoor temperature drops around 0'C. It can be hear that lock&motor are slow when it's cold. Then I got situation when it unlock-lock-unlock. If I tried to take out the key fob and put it back to key hole, lock&motor can be hear to move faster. Questions, can the lock be dirty which lead to this slowness or could it be slow because of cold lubrication in sleeves in lock..? In the other hand, I have a old battery in car, but it's strange that lock&motor works faster in second attemp.
kupukka Hi Definitely dirt can obviously slow down the moving parts... Then motor can also be the culprit... open the lock clean and lubricate it... Changing the motor would be also something to consider... Hope that helps...
kupukka I have exact same problem as you described. System will function just fine all spring and summer but comes fall or worse yet winter and it starts to fuck up. It’s been doing that for two years now and I know for a fact that cold temps are causing that. First I thought that perhaps bad soldering is the issue but now after reading all that I started to doubt myself. Probably just bad micro switch just as the video describes. I am going to have to just dive in and try to fix it myself as the replacement will cost me close to 1000$ here in Canada. Have you figured out the exact cause of your issue by chance?
Can confirm. Nordic country. Car works fine all (short) Spring and Summer, no issues. Temperatures start dropping and the warnings come in. For me, it is solved by taking out the key fob, turning the steering wheel as far left as I can, then put the key fob back in. Unlocks every time, no warning. Been doing that for a few years now but I'm worried that one day it will just lock up. I haven't performed any fix as it does mean messing with a tamper proof part and I don't want to find myself in a situation where I need to pay a large amount for reprogramming the car for new parts. I don't like that practice at all. A car should be serviceable. Good to know these micro switches can be easily fixed or swapped out without the need for reprogramming, should it come that far.
Hi. did this on my car but have the same problem and no ignition. the steering wheel lock goes on and off all the time. any suggestions on what it might be?
Hello! I have a 2011 B7 Passat that sometimes throws the "Steering Lock Defective" message I suspect it's the same issue as the B6, it's intermittent, sometimes it works fine, sometimes the ignition lights take a while to light up as the steering lock does 2 or 3 tries until they light up, sometimes the error shows up. For now I just remove the key and try again and it works fine but this situation is only going to get worse over time. Is the removal of the steering column easy? I can't for the life of me find a video or photos as to the actual removal of the column. I don't really want to mess with it without making some research first. Would hate to pay a fortune at the VW dealer for a steering lock replacement just because of two stupid oxidized microswitches...
Hi The steering is secured with 4 bolts/nuts under the cluster, and 1 bolt that secures the shaft right by the pedals... I know you can easily do it without the need of any video or photos...😉
passat b6 2010 model vehicle has an immobilizer active problem in hot weather, the ignition does not turn on, the vehicle does not work, there is no problem when the door is opened for 10-15 minutes and the temperature decreases. What is the solution for this case?
Hi mate, this is good video, I was hoping it will solve my issue (have a same model passat) however it seems something else is preventing engine startup. I don't have any alarms on dash board. When I plug the key in to first position I can see amber LED small steering wheel light coming on and can hear the steering lock unlocking. When I proceed further with the key to ignition start the small steering wheel LED turns red and there is no start not even trying to crank. Have you come across this issue before? I'm thinking I have issue with immobiliser but not sure at this stage. Thanks mate
Autostop The steering column is not that complicated... more is to take out the steering lock from the column, as this is secured with security bolts...
great video, very detailed explainings. Now see, the problem is with my b6 that i have replaced the whole mechanical part of the steering lock module, both switches, and i still get the beautifull "Steering lock module defective" message after few kilometers every time i erase the DTC's from all modules. what do you think the next step will be? Thank you!
Great Video!! This is what I looking for, I have the Steering Column Lock defective message on my Passat B6 since 8 months ago. Now became worst that when insert the key, it will not unlock. It need reinsert the key many times in order it will unlock. While it unlock, it can start the engine for 1 sec and it will off. Do you think the culprit also the micro switch in the ESCL? Thank you.
Imsvvavr, great video. Thank you. Please explain why we should remove the spring loaded lock? Do you mean when we put steering lock back , we dont need it?
Ravi kumar Hi Thank you for watching and for your comment. No, you don't need it... That's just a tamper mechanism... So you can't put is back once opened... Remove it and you will be just fine...
Sounds like a faulty steering lock, which might or might not be possible to repair and requires replacing. But, you need to perhaps remove it and inspect... 👍👍👍
@@LMAutoRepairs I have no idea what it could be. The symptoms that I have is that the car won't start but this happens like two times in a year. And it starts in like the fifth time but it's very random. Thank you for your answer👍
Good question... Don't quote me on this... The immobiliser is not on this module, although is part of it... the immobiliser needs to recognise and exchange information with it... such as steering locked and unlocked position...
lmsvvavr. Thanks for reply. Actually I have changed or put reconditioned steering column lock fitted in Passat 2009, but car has still starting problem, when I press key nothing happened and has no fault code safed related to steering lock issue. Can't understand where's the problem. Could you help me. Kind regards
Hi I really appreciate your comment and your interest... but to be honest, I have already too much in my hands... Too busy to take any more... But if you are having this problem, this video surely can help, and you are more than welcome to post any questions... Thank you
I can't really remember how much I have charged for this one...This is a part time for me, a business would obviously charge differently. I would say is takes a good 5 to 6 hours, if not more... just multiply that by the hour rate and you should roughly get an idea... hope that helps...
Its a bad design, I assume this part is Valeo made crap. I've had this problem in passat CC 2010 every winter started from 30k miles on the clock. Easy way to start the engine is spin the steering wheel when throws an error , pull the key out and start the engine again, been doing this past 7years.
I have only put the link for the place where I found similar switches... you might need to search further for the correct model, or adapt one to your needs...

Hi For no special reason... the car started just fine, and you can see the steering locks and unlocks every single time!... I should have done it, to avoid suspicions... my bad.

Robert Badea Hi I do this repairs on a part time basis... and I have enough to do at the moment... I would however, advise you to get it sorted rather soon than later... because that will fail, and you will be left stranded.... Hope that helps...

I can't remember now exactly how that one is... I usually figure out things as I go along... but you have 4 bolts or nuts on the under side, and then one bolt at the bottom of the shaft...
Thank you for watching!
Thanks for replying. Do you recall that you start with removing the airbag? I am trying to figure out how to remove the column cover.

If I recall correctly, you can do it without removing the steering wheel...

Can I pay you to fix my identical problem? I'm in London and I can't seem to find any garages that can be bothered to do this.
Could it ever be the spring that is stuck for the mechanical side of it as I’ve got the same problem and steering wheel is stuck open
Possibly...
But can fail either open or closed...

Yes... new one will need programming...

Hi
I can't remember if they are also connected on the other pin...
@@MarkTheEye
Are they always making contact independent of the pressure you put into it?
@@LMAutoRepairs Yes sir. They are
Today I tried it in car. It worked and after a few attempts it shows Steering lock problem on maxidot again and stopped working again. I do not know what to do. Microswitches seems to be all right, mechanical part also (checked) and relays probably too. I will try to change them even though it is not necessary..
Check also the electric motor... could be a weak motor, not always moving the lock to the end position... seen it in the past...
Are these steering faults same on Porsche cayenne/tourag .... Have one no start . Battery was weak and it activated steering fault . My basic scan tool will not work to clear it... ? Thanks

Here's how I have a problem with the 2007 Passat b6, so the tires on the car were replaced with nozzles, and then he somehow turned on the radio for 5 minutes, and then we washed his engine, because then the car won't start, the diagnostics show a crankshaft sensor error, but that put new and nothing, I really do not know what can happen if someone knows let him help,
Could it be that the steering wheel is locked and why would that happen if you can help me
Does it need to be coded if you replaced this with a new one? Or can you clear the faults with vcds after and that's it?
Hi
I never done it, but most likely will have to be coded...
Thank you for watching!
Hi iam having the same error, the problem only started after I got a new key fob programmed to my b6 passat 2006
iam not sure if the new key had caused this issue or the switches need cleaning as in you video,my car wont start or even try too,the car was down for about 7 months..
Great job but if changed the column electrical luck do we need to program the new one on the car againe and do we need to make new coding for the both of remote controls?
+Yervant Khachadorian
Hi
A new column would most likely need to be programmed... (I never done that...)
At second hand column, probably would need to be virginized first... and then programmed...
I am saying this with no previous research... so it might be that is not exactly like this...
there is no chance to virginized an used one...no solution available for public... yet
only brand new possible ,very simple...all you need is a PIn code, VCDS or similar device and good battery back up/support.
Shemek Best
It does make sense... Thank you for the info! Hopefully that will help others...
In the other hand, I have a old battery in car, but it's strange that lock&motor works faster in second attemp.
kupukka
Hi
Definitely dirt can obviously slow down the moving parts...
Do you have to put back the black slide lock thing with the springt that youre taking off ?? thx for answering :)
Hi
The anti-tampering mechanism, no...
Thank you for watching!
The black lock and the little spring is for safety yes? if taken out would it cause locking when driving? Please help.
No...
It is a tampering system...
Remove it makes no difference really...

How do you reset the fob after doing this
There is no need to reset the fobs...

Hi
Thank you for watching and for your comment!
Hi
The steering is secured with 4 bolts/nuts under the cluster, and 1 bolt that secures the shaft right by the pedals...
I know you can easily do it without the need of any video or photos...😉

where are the terminals/relays located in a passat?
Hi mate,
this is good video, I was hoping it will solve my issue (have a same model passat) however it seems something else is preventing engine startup.
