  • This is a demo of the correct tuning for the Fender Electric XII electric twelve string on the fourth album version of “When the Levee Breaks” which is C-F-C-F-A-C to help my pal JB Eckels understand what is actually going on in the original recording. This is a direct response to this video: • Zeppelin 'When the Lev...
I used my 1965 Fender Electric XII for this demo. According to Jimmy, the final track on the fourth album also featured slide lead overdubs from Jimmy’s Danelectro 3021 six string electric guitar.
It was long supposed that the track was slowed to change the pitch of the guitars to around one whole step down. I’ve proven that the original track was only slowed down by 5 bpm and the pitch did not change…I did this by comparing the original track with the final track. It was slowed down, but only barely. It is a myth that the track was slowed down significantly. The only way to achieve the final pitch on the album would have been for the entire band to play at “Chipmunk” speed to then to slow the tape down to arrive at this pitch. It’s just not physically possible for the technology of the time to come anywhere close to doing this in the mythological and uninformed way that many have supposed.

Thanks! As the title suggests, I made this to prove to JB Eckls that there were no strings removed and nothing unusual in the tuning-it is just open F. He seemed to have trouble with exactly how to play the riffs as well so I demoed the very simple straight barre chords and open strings that make up all of the song. I think he over-thought everything and got lost in his “breakdown” video that got tons of views but unfortunately ended up spreading misinformation: ua-cam.com/video/PmVCdBaif78/v-deo.html

@@Twobarpsi Thanks! While I appreciate that, I just recognized that JB found the most complex and convoluted way to play something that was ultimately extremely simple. My friend Brad Tolinski said that Jimmy told him that whenever someone is playing something he played in a complex way, they are always doing it wrong because he always finds ways to play things simply, or words to that effect. That’s certainly true in this case!
