    When this first came out, not many educated female Singaporeans were pleased at that time. Many of my friends were indignant. Years have passed and once again, the wisdom of our late prime minister had proven correct.

    LKY is so straightforward ... I lived in Singapore for some years during his time...and there was this debate about the salaries for ministers....he was so forceful and said he will hire the best surgeon in the country to be the health minister, the best engineer to be in charge of ports and so on and he will pay even more than what they can earn in private sector, he wants the country to be run by the best talents and they should not have any reasons to regret.... I was checking over the past years like LKY said in this interview 13 years ago, Singapore is still granting citizenship to 23K per year!!!!

    I respect the girl who asked that question. She's about 2 yrs younger than me. I almost forgotten the time since when Singaporeans started becoming aware of the rising immigrant population then this video reminded me. It was a valid question that many Singaporeans would ask. Yes Mr Lee did answer the question with the reason why we need immigrants, economically and statically. But the part of the question about how do we remain cohesive and sense of belonging, was quickly shot down with that he disagreed and cited the stagnancy of Japan's policy at that time.
    A bit embarrassing for the girl when the crowd laughed, but respect to her for taking it and answering the dare with true answers. She could have skirted around it with yes she had a BF.

      He answered the part about how to remain cohesive and have a sense of belonging while taking in foreigners. He said integration is important, a higher priority even than maintaining a young population, and we can integrate 25,000 per year at the most, so that's what we will do.

    • @CCEnt-lu9ko

    I think many missed the answer to the question which show lky is a statesman. He answered it immediately and the answer is we are not going to intergrete the foreign worker. Send send them home after they have slogged in Singapore for entire lifes when they are no longer econonically productive. But he cannot say this publicly. So he inferred it and gave 2 long reasons for this.

      Man everywhere the thought is the same , i'm genuinely asking.
      for example if the foreign worker is indian , so he should slog away his productive years to singapore and should be deported to his country.
      But people of chinese and other east asian descents can stay because they are from the same mongoloid group.
      Is that your assertion?
      and the guy who posted the video, I gather that he agrees with the statement made.

    • @nnaaeee
      @nnaaeee 2 дні тому +3

      While you are not wrong, your answer is just one part of the equation. You can integrate the foreign worker, but only certain groups. 60,000 applied each year, and out of that, the most 'integratable' 20,000 will be chosen. So, its not like we are not going to integrate the foreign worrker, its just that most are just not a good fit with the Singaporean society.

    He possessed a remarkable ability to offer guidance to others, skillfully navigating their dilemmas with wisdom and tact. Yet, when it came to his own children, he found himself at a loss, unable to extend the same clarity and counsel. Imagine being part of a renowned family-a name that commands admiration and respect. But what happens when the pillar of that family, the esteemed leader, is no longer there? The once-proud bonds begin to unravel, relationships deteriorate into fragments of what they once were, and the family becomes the subject of idle chatter in coffee shops, a cautionary tale for curious onlookers.

      Power corrupts absolutely and power made LKY so absolutely corrupt in the sense, he began thinking of himself in immortal terms, like no stranger can step into his 'hallowed' house after his death. Consequently, so high handed was he, he willed his home to PM LHL (elder), then probably give instruction both public but seems especially to LHY the younger.
      His own family if not the entire nation is divided with his offspring suffering serious internecine conflict as a result, hopefully, his greed for power doesn't leave a time bomb which will unravel Singapore society in the near future.

      Hi when we talk about LKY, i think we need to have respect for him. He would have sacrificed his own life and family for Singapore. And he has, and likely he has spent more time at work building Singapore rather than spending time building his family. It is sad that when he is gone, his children fought over his house and tried to destroy each other, that they value the idea of the house over the value of their relationship.

The traditional family model in which the young generations takes care of the elderly has existed for thousand years or even longer. Just because there are pensions and nursery houses now, it does not mean that elderly does not need the support from younger generation.
      Having kids looking after you at old age is a reasonable desire and action. There may be a lot of inequality, unfairness, lack of love in the past. Fast forward to 2024. Cost went through the roof. Locals are losing their ability to compete for good jobs. Social cohesiveness is now non-existent. The only thing that the citizens are holding out for are the regular handouts. Every day you hear people say to vote wisely. I think it is clear that the locals are voting for their future now unlike the past. Majulah LMW

      People who always blame the government loses. Look inwards before always complaining about the surrounding circumstances. People don’t want to work hard these days, that’s the problem. Having a child was NEVER cheap no matter which generation it was. So stop claiming and use the time to think about how to upgrade yrself. I can now hire a virtual employee in the Philippines and Indonesia for 700USD a month, and works harder, less privileged. People like u still thinking about waiting for the government to help u get a job. Wake up ur idea

    I don't think developed countries like Japan, S.Korea or Singapore have to worry about population collapse. People from developed countries think too much. They're scared of living in poverty. They're scared of not being able to provide for their children. They're scared that their children wouldn't have a good life and so on. Then they don't have kid and the population dwindle. However, people from underdeveloped countries like Vietnam for example. They're not afraid of anything. They'd get married and have lots of children eventhough they're poor and know full well they won't be able to provide for their children. The children grow up poor, usually uneducated, some would die along the way, some have to work to provide for themselves, but they eventually grow up regardless. The grown up children keeping the same mentality as their parents then migrate to developed countries as migrant workers working low paying jobs. There again they have many children despite poverty and the inability to provide for their children, but now in developed countries their children can live off welfare. Eventually, they'll replace the population pool of the host country. It's but natural.

    • @lex21727
      @lex21727 4 дні тому

      There’s always the chance that the children change their minds when they migrate to ‘advanced’ countries and adopt the more developed view about having birth because now they are more informed as to how that would affect their lives socioeconomically, not blindly following their parents’ way of life anymore. It is certainly true in my case.

    LKY avoided the question asked. Also, he assumed her sexual orientation, assumed that family and kids were what she wanted, and if the girl really wanted family and kids he did not ask what was holding her back. Instead of trying to understand why people were not having kids, he saw people as numbers and stats.

      The only thing he assumed was her sexual orientation. (Which is about a 90% likelihood but yeah I guess u got him on that).
      Whether she wanted to have kids or not doesn't matter. What matters to a leader is that a country does have a future. By bringing in migrants, he's allowing her to have a choice of having kids, or not to have kids, without facing the economic consequences of one choice or another, because someone else (who is statistically more likely to have kids) is having them.
      Their kids will pay back into the system decades later for her, and afford her the freedom to choose to have, or not have children.

      Yes, I don't understand how people think this is acceptable. A woman's worth (or anyone's for that matter) does not simply boil down to their ability to find a mate and reproduce. It's possible that she could be contributing much more to society as a researcher rather than as a baby-making device, and that very well may be what she finds personal value and enjoyment in. His comment of "(baby-making) is more important and more satisfying than your PhD" just came off as extremely condescending and ignorant, especially considering how reliant singapore is on its innovation & technology sectors. Singapore owes much of its prosperity to people like her who dedicate their lives to research.
