As you showed, the better way to strike is to put the striker down near the tinder and pull the rod back. This not only protects the tinder from being scattered, it helps direct the sparks directly onto the tinder for better results.

so another way that I have found to strike with the knife spine is to turn the blade edge upwards towards you ( BEING VERY CAREFUL NOT TO CUT YOUR SELF!). Then pull the ferro rod backwards and towards you, this seems to throw very good sparks. Just a thought!
Cool looking rod! Two quick questions for anyone who might know the answers. 1) Is the ferrocerium makeup of these any different from any of the other Chinese made rods? I was under the impression that the Chinese rods were all the same since theres very little manufacturers for the materials and the Austrian rods were the harder type that you can strike slowly, like the Light My Fire ones. 2) Do they maintain their hexagonal shape well over time as long is you stay on the flats, or do they eventually turn into a round rod?
