Minelab $4000 Garret $2150 big difference in price and not too far apart in performance.

(thought it would work as normal due to it being water proof within certain parts of the detector), on dry land and sand worked well. My first one, so still have lots to learn
Thanks for your video. In wet areas like New Zealand the ATX being water proof to 10 feet adds an advantage to the ATX.
Yeah, I am very curious to know how the ATX would do with the 20 x 15 coil as well.

Bearkat....a big thanks for all your fine videos on the ATX. In my opinion your videos are unbiased and accurately show how the GPX compares to the ATX. It is pretty clear that the ATX with the DD coil is perhaps equal or better at finding fine gold than the GPX and only slightly less so at finding large nuggets. I like the simplicity of the ATX. Yes, I understand that the GPX can match the ATX and exceed it by changing coils and settings but the fact is no one ever knows for sure what is under their coil! My ATX will arrive this Friday and I can hardly wait. Your videos helped me make the decision on which detector to purchase.....an easy decision really......thanks.....jim

I have both machines. The atx is my go to machine. Where as the more expensive minelab I think was way to much money for what it is.

What i find interesting is all the coils and settings you have to have with the 5000 to find the same thing with a single dd coil and the press of a couple of buttons and the atx is waterproof. The atx also doesn't require a harness to carry the battery.
And the atx has pin point where the 5000 doesn't.

No...size, shape, and orientation are all factors, which will change how the detector reacts/sounds. There is no detector that says gold or silver is down there.

My SD2100 Minelab could have detected that big nugget easy with my 18 inch mono coil. It all depends on the soil on well it detects for any machine. I have manual ground balance on my detector which I think is the best for deep nuggets or anything deep enough for the coil to pickup. Thanks for the video. That GPX is a nice machine, but 5000 dollars buys a lot of beer.

Need the same kind of coil.if the ground is full of iron you have to use a concentric coil not a mono.gpx will punch way deeper.

If you would have used the mono coil on the ATX, it would have sounded on that nugget at 22+ inches. Good comparison and thanks, but maybe next time use the same type of coil on each unit. Mono coils always detect deeper than dual coils.
I am a beginner and I'm going to buy a detector in the next month. I'm not worried about saving money but I am deeply concerned with the highest quality and not missing anything large or small. What do you suggest? I live in Arizona. The ground is pretty hard, rocky and sandy in parts which is where I'll use it. I'd also like to take it to the lake from time to time. I will be out treasure hunting several days a week.
I own a 5000. I find half ounce nuggets that is deep as he's banging on that great big one. If you shop around you can pick one up for about $2,000 that's all I paid for mine with four extra heads.
After watching your video, I think I'll go for a Garrett. I am hunting for gold nuggets in the Jimi Valley of Jiwaka Province, PNG. My problem is how do I buy that machine in PNG. Am also looking at buying online option but not sure if I'll get the actual model and if it will work exactly as it is intended. Appreciate Some ideas on where and how to get that machine into my country.

That gold has had some serious battering, hasn't it? I like a metal detector with the control box attached to my waist belt. It remove the extra weight when the box is attached to the sweeping pole and it is easier to see all switches and LCD screen or needle gauge. This way you can sweep the ground longer before you tire your arm. I have a 1976 Whites Coinmaster 6000D converted to hip belt mount. Sweeping the coil is much lighter, plus I can read and pin point a target better than when the control box was on the sweeping pole.

Keep at it man! I run my ATX on full power! Threshold at 9. For max depth and if it stable enough area, I run mine in non-motion mode - gets a bit more depth, say about 5-10% more. But usually the motion mode on max is good enough. It will get 92% of what the GPX 5000 will hear in motion mode.

I mean that's a good test but if I had the garrets I would've not dug it it seems the minelab is quicker but if your swing speed is fast would the Garrett's still hit the signal
Get the NEL Coil for the Garrett or the Minelab and you will get another 3-4 inches . Then you will have to go back and do all your old spots . Type in NEL Coil on You-Tube . Lot of demonstrations . NEL Attack Coil I think might be the best .

The gpx range are copied from a GFX originally made for prospectors in Dubai and made in Guangdong province in China I had one 13 years ago when I was teaching there. At least the Garret was made in the USA and Not technology developed in China. You got to give the Chinese credit for that. They are tech savvy

About 1400 an ounce depending on when ya check, it varies alot from year to year. Usually around 40 a gram. This is us currency BTW.
That was a great test you did for us punters I see you dont bother to ground balance the Garrett is this not nessecary for the cheaper machines
Air test should be air test not in hole air test. Why ground balance on the ground then run the detector over a 18inch deep hole? Most detectors would react to just the hole anyway.

It seems the ATX is a bit better finding small gold than the Minelab gpx/ gp detectors w/ DD coils.... but it takes an awful lot of fine gold to make 5.4oz's. It also seems to me that if you had been searching for hours or even days in noisy ground, you may have missed that big slug with the ATX, where only a deaf person would have missed it with the Minelab.
You must remember the GPX has a mono coil on it...BIG difference in depth...because I put the ATX 8" mono on the ATX and it hit that big nugget better than the stock ATX DD coil. Mono's are just better at that big stuff. I'm trying to get Garrett to make a 10"x12" mono coil for the ATX to get closer to the GPX Mono coil depth. That's all it was...
Bearkat4160 Ah! sorry I missed the fact the GPX was running a mono! I'm not trying to down play the ATX.. in fact I've been hearing really good reports from people in the field. I Just personally feel that the minelabs with there extensive line of coils, aftermarket included, you get a solid machine with lots of options, and with years and years of testing behind it. And lets not forget you can pick up a GP extreme, SD or GP 3500 maybe even a GPX 4000 for less than a ATX. I've got a GP extreme and 4 coils including a NF 20" mono that I'm in for no more than a ATX. And FWIW I've found 5 gram nuggets @ 18" with the big 20" coil no problem! Good Vids BTW!!
golfnstuf Yep the GPX stuff is the KIng of the hill...no doubt about it. I'm just trying to give people another more affordale option that should still find 90% of the gold a GPX might find. The ATX is a high end machine for less cost. But like you said some people might want an old SD or Extreme for still less and more coil selection than the ATX...theres room for all these machines!
