These are brainless Democrat talking points to gaslight voters who don’t know anything about campaign finance laws or the precedent set in Boston v Bellotti that corporations had free speech rights when it comes to advocating for political casues and ballot initiatives and Buckley v Vallejo which ruled that limitations on independent expenditures are unconstitutional to begin with as corporations, unions and non-profits are made of people who have the right individually or collectively to use their money to excerise their First Amendment rights and limitations on contributions to counteract corruption is entirely justified but trying to stifle political speech to counteract corruption is totally unconstitutional.

There is one big exception to the oil producing countries: Norway. Norway was extremely poor till oil became important. But I agree with Fareed and Norway is really an exception
Norway was not as wealthy as their immediate neighbors but certainly not a 3rd world basket case, and they had a well established democratic form of government .... and they had Henrik Ibsen .... Edvard Grieg ..... Top talent, on par with the best of the rest of Europe
@@DarksideDave42but the others were also not that rich, except, Denmark. Norway is probably, the richest country in the world now and it's mostly because of oil
That’s not correct. “Dutch disease” refers to the revaluation of a country’s currency that occurs when it has large oil exports which result in its non-oil products becoming non-competitive and leading to deindustrialization. This happened to a degree in the Netherlands. However the Netherlands was already an advanced democracy with a successful market economy and highly developed human capital. What the panel was discussing is how primitive societies fail to develop human capital and modern civil and economic institutions when their elites can rely on oil exports.

To answer your question Bill, Bitcoin's value is in that it is fully decentralized not owned or manipulated by a power who then endlessly debases that currency by printing off more (USD). Bitcoin mining is the decentralized security of the network around the world mostly all run on excess grid loads which then turn off when those grid loads are in need. This stabilizes the local grids and helps the municipalities. Stranded green energy is the most attractive for btc because where other traditional sources can't take advantage of stranded energy, Bitcoin can enable growth in this field more than most industries and miners want it because it is the cheapest option.
Dont waste your time, Bill conflates crypto with his disgust of the younger generations. His "I was wrong about Bitcoin" speech is a few years off yet.

@@davidguelette7036 It’s not because once again Citizens United vs FEC did not decide that corporations were entitled to personhood or that money was equivalent to speech.
More money is raised with small dollar contributions than big doners. Small doners are causing more problems that big doners because they are less well informed and give money to the radical candidates of both parties. This is how we get the crackpots running who know nothing about running a government.
really liked the guests as individuals and as a collective. no dummy guest to provoke everyone's ire. thank you!
There is one big exception to the oil producing countries: Norway. Norway was extremely poor till oil became important. But I agree with Fareed and Norway is really an exception
Norway was not as wealthy as their immediate neighbors but certainly not a 3rd world basket case, and they had a well established democratic form of government .... and they had
Henrik Ibsen ....
Edvard Grieg .....
Top talent, on par with the best of the rest of Europe
@@DarksideDave42but the others were also not that rich, except, Denmark. Norway is probably, the richest country in the world now and it's mostly because of oil
We need to change the campaign laws where the rich guy does not pays to lecture himself
Answer to the first question is also colloquially referred to as Dutch Disease among the economics profession.
@@georgemiller151 Oil is secondary to the point of the term. "Dutch disease is a concept that describes an economic phenomenon where the rapid development of one sector of the economy (particularly natural resources) precipitates a decline in other sectors. It is also often characterized by a substantial appreciation of the domestic currency."

I think the concept of the "resource curse" is more relevant here.
@@themaskedman221 Dutch disease is simply the academic term for resource curse. Consider them synonymous and interchangeable.

Why is Canada never mentioned when discussing "oil rich countries"?
Indeed, the Alberta government is a textbook case of Dutch Disease.
Canada is never mentioned when discussing anything. That's a proper wake for the nation's last 9 years.
Neither is Norway but they are set for life (well maybe for the next generation). Also, both would be good examples of "doing it right" and investing into other industries.
No one cares about us because we're a small population of boring pushovers ruled by oligarchs. We're basically America's lap dog, the pseudo state in waiting. Whatever the U.S. does, Canada usually follows right behind them doing something very similar. So, there's no need to think of us as a separate entity.
@@yuriydee this is a good follow on point. Both Canada and Norway fit the mold that was mentioned when discussing the United States - countries that had stable government and systems, then discovered oil. Taking time to invest that oil income into something that helps the average citizen, putting in systems that also prevent mass corruption.
Great panel this week! New rules - everyone needs to watch.
Love this show.
Let Fareed know that Ronnie was forced out because she was part of the coup attempt, not because of her views.

"Pumping it full of garbage...all the time." Priceless insight.
Fareed is brilliant. Love hearing his insights.

There's an old term or saying regarding using swear words, something like how can/ should change the language use if aren't among friends, but are talking to your grandma or pastor.
Social Media has completely removed that need to filter

Stop manipulation cold. Learn to reflect and think for yourself, and question yourself often -- Why do I believe what I believe ? How can others use my own beliefs against me or to gain power over me ? What are my assumptions, presumptions, prejudices, fears, insecurities ? How can these be used to manipulate me ?
Now why would the people that insist Trump is a Russian agent want you to think for yourself in a calm and sensible manner.

Bill and his show, still knocking it out of the ballpark! Maher is loaded with talent and intellect and is right at the top of his game, and I love the diversity of the guests. Just keeps getting better and better. I always called it comedy with "nutrition" but I heard him use the term "edu-tainment" which is a perfect description. No entertainer has ever made me laugh - or think - so much. :)

From your reply I would surmise you consider all your sources and draw your own conclusions regarding CONTENT. I believe your compliment is meant for the particular STYLE of this host and show, and how comedy and topical content are combined.
That is your opinion, which I do not share. I am fully aware of the limitations of this genre of television program, and enjoy this program because it works hard to break out of those limitations.
