We have encountered separation anxiety with both Copper and Skye since we brought them home. We've tried a number of different things to tackle the problem without completely solving it. We're now at the point where Skye is usually quiet and Copper will only bark for the first 5-10 minutes, then sporadically on and off for a couple of hours. In an attempt to learn more about the canine disorder, I spoke to separation anxiety expert Malena DeMartini. She's been working exclusively with separation anxiety dogs for nearly 20 years. You can check out the interview in the link below. But in this clip, I share two of the big separation anxiety myths that Malena debunked for me.

All dogs have separation anxiety, as a pup they leave the nest, brothers, sisters and mom. And then end up alone in say a crate, they need to learn and trust that nothing will happen and that it's not bad at all. All dogs need this training.

I would also be interested in any thoughts you might have on good mental stimulation for Klee Kai! I have a 4 1/2 month old Klee Kai, and it’s very evident to me that mental stimulation is what wears him out even more than anything physical but I have a hard time finding products or ideas to satisfy his needs! If you have experience with this, I think your videos are very helpful!

Megan Matheson i do find mental stimulation helps to tire them out. Speaking in general terms (not with regards to separation anxiety), when we walk them, if we get them to do lots of commands, when they come back, they sleep a lot longer! What mental stimulation do you use?

My previous dog was a westie. He slept in my bed all the time but he never had any problem with separation anxiety. I would go to work every day, all day long, and he had no problems whatsoever. No crying, no destroying things, nothing. He would sleep all the time.
Now, the current dog, a Husky, is a whole different matter. You cannot leave him alone, not even for 5 minutes. He would howl and cry and it sounds like somebody is torturing him. Lucky for both me and him, I work from home now so he doesn't have to be alone. But it is a problem when/if we want to go out for a dinner, for example. He doesn't care who stays with him actually, but he needs someone to be with him all the time.

Think of the poor dogs and cats, that are in the pound. My dog left with a big male dog. Rover was a black pit and some sort of terrier. It's 2 peas in a pod. They love running wild, and their fast as lightning!
