Very nice. Many frequency separation tutorials are disconcerting because using their technique to process the images makes the clients feel that the only way to create a pleasing image of them is to do a major Vogue cover facial reconstruction. Crushing ones self-image doesn’t make for happy clients. You show that clients can retain their realistic special characteristics and still create portraits that they are proud of having displayed.
I'm late to this video but it was very helpful for someone who is trying to understand and learn photoshop techniques! Thank you for the free action download!

Nice job, I appreciated you making scripts available, saved me some time. Not sure if you suggested this already, but I added a dark grey layer behind the texture layer so I could edit texture easily. I have long used High Pass/Hard Light sharpening method for similar effect and this makes it easier to work on textures for me.
Hi Jeff, Thanks for the informative tutorial. By the way, for the 16 bit image don't we use add as blending mode, Invert checked and Scale 2 , Offset 0, Thanks again for your time.
THANKS man! One of the best videos I've ever seen on this subject! One question though...Should the image just be flattened when done? I notice the color layer takes away some sharpness from the original image when flattened.
This is a great video. thank you so much! I tried to go to the site for your action and it takes me to the page but the action isn't there. It says there is a problem with your page. Did you remove it or do I just need continue checking back?
Jeffrey, do you Dodge / Burn luminance (as opposed to colour) irregularities away while retouching? I hear, some people use FS to remove them, as opposed to D&B. I personally tend to use D&B for that (and, should it wreak havoc on colours), use an empty layer in Colour blending mode to correct for colour inconsistencies. Takes quite a bit of work - I don't mind. The problem, rather, is - that I end up doing a number of passes (and adding a slight blur to most of them, as the stroke is mostly sharper than the blemishes - else I risk adding a Dodge / Burn to surrounding areas that don't need it). Another issue is - a D/B with a wide brush tends to give a soft appearance (some would call it "dreamy", but unnatural and amateurish - not dreamy in Sue Bryce's style) to the image. Would be nice if there was some sort of a very detailed skin tone luminance -based masking / selection method to Dodge the darker blemishes and Burn the lighter ones and thus even out skin tones (except, obviously, for shadows / highlights where they do belong).
I love this:) I am not quite understanding the "airbrush" part. What brush am I choosing for this? It looks like you are only using a regular soft brush. Is it something else specifically? The behavior of the brush looked different. If I have an airbrush that is named that...I don't know where it is. Thank you so much for your time and generosity.
Hi Shayre, Thanks so much for watching and for the kind words! :D The specific brush that I'm using is the standard featured brush that Photoshop comes with default. If you are currently using Cloud, it is the first brush in your set marked 30. :) Jeff

Hi Jeff, if this was a "model" shoot rather than a "portrait", would you remove more pores? Likewise, if the subject was female, would you be more aggressive with your smoothing or do you apply the same philosophy for all portraits?

HI Jeff, Great Video. I've downloaded the your FS Actions, which work fine but I have a question. When the Gaussion Blur is applied, which is at a very low rate, the whole image loses its sharpness due to the blur? Is this correct, as id like to keep the eyes sharp??? Thanks Jeff
Hi Other photographers who have produced a FS technique tutorial have used different values in Apply Image depending on whether they are using a 8 or 16 bit image. The values you showed seemed to be the 8 bit image values but you were using a 16 bit image - do you change the values in these circumstances ?
Thank you for sharing. I've been using frequency separation for a long time now, but there is one point where I find this tecnique challenging to use: When dealing with mature women or dealing with young people with enlarged pores, that you want to make less visible. What I've done so far is to use Frequency Separation for the majority part, and then use a surface blur to deal with the pores. But is there a better way that doesn't involve erasing every single enlarged pore?
That's a great question! Would you be willing to send me a photo of the clients that your work with and I'd be happy to demo on one. :) Shoot me an email at info@sajorffej.com:D
I'd love to, but I can't at the moment as I don't have permission to post original files of my clients on the internet. If I can get a permission from one of them I'll send it to you. Thank you for your quick response. :)
Would it be any difference if you just put the layer called color over the original image and then change its blending mode to color? I mean, repacing the colors of the blemishes in such layer doesnt alter the luminance of the picture either. That makes a third layer unnessecary.
Thank you for the great video! I've downloaded the action, AND followed the video step by step, but I feel I'm missing something. When I put the picture to "linear light" it does not allow both images to be visible like shown in the video. I'm left with an all white image. I also noticed I don't end up with the grey, as shown in the video, but the white. IS this something that is an easy fix, something I've forgotten? Any help is appreciated. I don't exactly know how to take a screenshot, but if I need to, let me know and I'll figure it out :P

I always have the problem that it looks fake. It just looks fake. No matter how subtle I approach it. If I take the healing brush for the colors I sample a brigher area to remove a darker area but instead the area becomes even darker. I'm doing something wrong.

Arsene Wenger It's an action. Good work takes elbow grease. ;) By definition an action is "a series of steps that have been recorded by their creator. This sequence of steps can then be reapplied at any time, which allows you to recreate the end result without having to go through each individual step every time."

Amazing teaching. I’ve watched other tutorials on frequency separation but this one is the best.
This was the easiest way I learn from a photographer to obtain really a good portrait edition, thanks for sharing your knowledge with us.

Terrific, you do make it simple. LOVED all of them. You are very generous with your knowledge. Thank you Plus your portfolio is "BELISSIMO"!
OMG, it is so simple than the other tutorials.
Great technique! Once I wrapped my brain around it, it is invaluable for all kinds of photo retouching from portraits to architecture!

more handsome Jeff
please you are very quick its hard to follow you thanks
Try the pause button. :)
you should have got rid of the mole on his cheek.
Why? He was born with it. Should I remove his eyes and nose in post production to?
Jeff Rojas Yeah but its distracting. if it was not their no one would notice. the perfect skin makes his mole more noticeable.
That's your PERSONAL view. While I don't agree with it... you can choose to do as you please. :)
Jeff Rojas i guess it would all depend on what the client wants.
