- Welcome to the Africa History series. Today we tackle the question "Were Ancient Egypt Black or White". This is Part 1 of the episode and here we look at evidence that answers the question.
one thing about truth is it was always going to come out.
I chuckled when you said, “wait for it.”
;)
Dramatic liar, eh?
Remember the Rwanda Genocyde? One of the underlying factors was that the colonial powers had classed the Tutsis as belonging to the "Hamitic" group and thus related to them as fellow "Caucasians" and as a result put them in positions of power, privilege and advantage over the Twa and Hutu who they classed as "Negr0id" and thus inferior. This messed up a fluid but stable societal structure that had held for centuries and led to deep seated resentments that reached a peak in 1994.
Afroasiatic language speakers Africans and Niger-congo language speakers Africans appear to have noticeably different body mass and structure

Since the earliest dynasties, Egyptians made sure to portrait their southern neighbors (Nubians) different than themselves. If the ancient Egyptians were black, why are most females depicted as yellowish?
@@EGYPT.ATREES Maybe their natural skin color was light to medium and they got sunburned. They portrayed themselves differently from the whit skinned caucasians to the north

@@sharonbartley808
And why would they lie if they were black, they would be proud of that when they were also not white, they look like the peoples of the Middle East. If you search, you will find that they used to paint men darker than women, to indicate that they trained in the sun, and colors women in their true color, and this indicates the absence of racial racism because they did not draw themselves super-white, as in the European civilizations, but in their true colors. Most Egyptians are like wheat. The pharaonic civilization was an African civilization, but it was not built by the blacks
@@82leegary They portrait the Libyans as yellowish as well. But you claim that native Africans can be only black, lmao. Delusional. Little Sub-Saharans... so desperate for an identity to claim.

Thank you.
To speak for myself, I'm very African,😶 born by two Nigerian parents and very light skinned. The question of whether ancient Egyptians were "white" or "black" is a stupid question to me. What is white and black? That needs to be defined first and what are the outliers?
true, this is too much of an anglo-saxon pov, which people like you and me that are not from the anglo-sphere don't even understand. They were mixed, mostly close middle easterners and north africans of today (MENA) with also mix with sub saharan africans and mediterenneans. In short they were North Africans and yes also Africans. White or black? It doesn't really work for them because they aren't Americans or northern European Britts.
This question appears to be asked for an obviously broader audience than the simply the perspective and population seem to volunteer to represent. You are only looking at the question solely through your own narrowly defined lens. When the question is a global one that most people will understand. That is why it doesn't make sense. However, the added context you provided is helpful.
Who told you that you were light skinned ?
Even the Greeks described Ancient Egyptians as being tall, thin, and dark skinned just like Nilotic Africans in the Nile Valley today.
Ronald Mugo Theres actually several ethnic groups in Western Africa who in the stories of their origin claim to have come from Ancient Egypt and Nubia. The Songhai for example claim to have come from Ancient Nubia. The language they speak isn’t even classified as a Niger Congo language but a Nilo Saharan language. Also if you read Cheik Anta Diop’s books he talks a lot about similarities between Western Africa and the Nile Valley in language, culture, and religion.
@Ronald Mugo the bantus are the blacksmiths and traders that sourced all that wealth from central Africa. Bantus succeeded greatly in farming due to the tools they made. I wouldnt be surprised if they were commisioned to carve out some of Egypt's sculptures. Bantus r pretty good with their hands because they focused more on creation and negotiation for prosperity than conquering and warfare for the same ends
You mean the Cushites. Herodotus mentioned the Cushites. Who were Nomadic Herders and fearless warriors. Are you Bantu 😄
@Donnell Okafor Egypt was invaded by the Persians, Assyrians, Sumerians, Greeks and lastly by the Arabians These DNA results your talking about that prove they weren't black are more than likely from one of the conquerors above. We're not talking about invaders here, we are talking about the descendants of Ham who is the father of the land of KMT, the ones who built the pyramids and they were all black.
@Donnell Okafor Just look at the people of Eritrean, Somalia and Ethiopian decent. They are the true ancient Egyptians.
I am grateful they carved themselves in stones. It’s interesting because it’s like they knew race and skin color was a big problem we would face.
@Brownsugar M Thank you.

No matter whether black or white. They lived and made the great history and it is enough. Even today, it is more important to think about the purity of mind than the color of the skin.
The attitude you have about the race of ancient Kemites is the reason why invaders still claim the history inspite of evidence inscribed on stone

It was going well until she said "they borrowed"... NO, they stole! Normally, when someone borrows an idea, they give credit to the source. But people who steal ideas,, do so with the intent of taking ALL the credit for that idea by saying it came from them.
I love smart people 🖤 You got it EXACTLY RIGHT.
@@allen1584, you're basing your argument predicated upon modern concepts of legality. Stealing is stealing, and each era had its own understanding of the concept.
That's why nobody likes American blacks, because they're always trying to steal other peoples' identity, history, and achievements. It's the lowest of the low. West African Negroes were still in Middle Stone Age less than 11,000 years ago. They were not yet modern humans, they were archaic hominids. The oldest modern human fossil with Negroid features is only 6,400 years old. The ancient Egyptians were in place long before then. People who were Caucasian biologically and Eurasian genetically were the first modern humans to people and settle North, Central, and East Africa. Negroes came in the last 5-6,000 years ago.
Negroes, Australoids, Melenesians, etc., evolved separately from everyone else. Negroes are the most recent modern humans to arise and no other human groups descended from them.
I remember being confused as a kid when I see ancient egyptians look largely dark-skinned in ancient paintings yet almost all-white in movies... I love everything egyptain since an early age and that really drives me mad
@Michaelle Mcgill you mad now hater
@Michaelle Mcgill It is upsetting. I realized how awful the lies regarding Egypt were when I took a Geography class in college. We're in COLLEGE btw and had to look up given coordinates and label them on a map as a group. We were given the coordinates to Cairo. Mind you we're in COLLEGE. I told my partner we need a map of Africa and she asked, "are you sure?". A 20-something year old college student had no clue Egpyt was on the continent of Africa. This what the whitewashing of ancient Egypt has done.
Egyptians depicted themselves as reddish/light brown (with the exception of females, mostly depicted as yellowish). They depicted Nubians as black and dark brown.
@MAYAH ATCHISON When was Egypt black?
@@EGYPT.ATREES Yeah thank you for telling the truth, these people dont know sh*t.

This is no debate. Cheik Anta Diop proved it scientifically three decades ago by examining the melanin level under the skin of all the major mummies at European museums.
Ancient Kemtians (let's call them by their own appellation by respect) were BLACK!
BTW, the newest British Black Month manifesto (published by the British Government) has acknowledged this fact (finally!).
That is great news.
@Amy Paps well that's how the UK Government named it. Racism is not about words, just like sexism. Otherwise no one would be allow to utter anything with so many racist or sexist words and names: blacklist, Indians, human, mankind, etc.
@Amy Paps any nation, any race, is supremacist. The Black History Month is not the only such cultural celebration in the UK. The UK is a democracy (at least in its form). if the people didn't like it, they can sack their leaders. Im not British. That's their choice. Anything else is speculation.
@Amy Paps ha ha. Again, you're embracing the common, yet false understanding of racism. For most people (hence its dictionary's mention), racism is about antagonism, or discrimination of some sort. While it's NOT! Racism (sharing its root with the word Race) is about "The Competition of Nations (meaning races) for the control of resources". If you think some group is pushing you or people like you aside, it's your Divine Right to push back. And that's what Black people in England (and the rest of the World are doing). You call it (reverse) racism. I call it natural evolution.
Egyptians are brown.

In this day this should not even be a discussion. Those early Egyptologist saturated the field with bias and racism. This is not worth a debate. If Nubians do not know their own history and rely on non Nubians to rewrite their history then so be it. Even the Torah and the Bible ole history documentation tell you who the early Nubians were and in the breakdown of nation they are the children of Ham the father of the dark race of hammitic peoples. All of history is on one accord until invaders and colonialist decided the majesty was too grand and thier slave race can never be a master race of people.
SnugglePass Precisely and this illustrates the point. Pseudo historical to whom? And why Afrocenticism? whenever the lies of colonialist are exposed they claim expertise, and there is no one else who can enter a field black scientists and anthropologist or historians cannot exists in their world. However the blatant lies in history are taught daily as truth. Diop was one of the first black historians including Ivan van sertima they came before Columbus I read as a teen. @ThinkBefore YouType your crazy
@ThinkBefore YouType does that mean Egyptians today have some sort of Greek descents in them?
I'm confused as to why are we even discussing this? I have a college degree, love ancient history , have read about and watch several documentaries on ancient Egypt, but I have never heard one person say that the ancient Egyptians were white. Why would anyone even think that was true? The Egyptians left paintings and carvings that leave no question about what they looked like. According to what I have seen, the Egyptians appear to have been a brown skin people. Not dark like many of the African people who live in other countries like Kenya or Sudan.

BIG FACTS!
I'd read they were genetically and phenotypically middle eastern. You can see Egyptian art work depicting themselves with lighter skin tones than Nubians and Kishites , but darker than the Mycenae greeks. I also read there was a period where the Nubians conquered Egypt and there were Nubian Pharoes
Well yeah they were native north African but the thing is Egyptian are trying to deny that old Egyptians had any thing to do with black people when there was continuous people movement from north to south and vice versa and you can still find people that resembles old Egyptians in some parts of east Africa but they are darker
I'm referring to the ancient Egyptians, the old kingdom through the new kingdom. Genetic analysis concluded that they resemble peoples of the Levant and look substantially similar to modern day Egyptians (like the Egyptologist she's interviewing).
The Ancient Egyptians were, according to archaeological and genetic evidence, descended from Levantine migrants who migrated into the Nile valley. They had the most genetic affinity with Modern-day Egyptians and actually had 8% less Sub-Saharan African ancestry than their descendants. The Ancient Egyptians also had lighter skin, which had the most affinity with the Neolithic Anatolians (the ''Avgi'' girl is an example).

Records dated back to the first Humanoids skeletal remains was found in the central parts of Africa. The Nile River flows south to north. Which direction migration will take place? The fossils of early humans who lived between 6 and 2 million years ago come entirely from Africa.
They were black and people who ask such a question and make video of this type are confused or simply racist. They were all Africans and it is written in their stories, artifacts and status
What makes you think all of Africa wasn’t always connected. These people were brilliant and extremely sophisticated...why wouldn’t they sail up and down the Nile River for fun and leisure. Think about it.
They go with the sub-Saharan lie. It makes no sense.
They actually did. Somehow, East Africa was connected. It makes sense, people moved around the Nile Valley where Life was possible! So, for instance, agriculture flourished, or first elements of local production of, say. Cotton and papyrus were exchanged; fisheries existed, and more was done. Now, such settlements of people wouldn't be possible without ongoing developments and contacts with several groups and cultural influences, including the so beloved cushites, for example, and other peoples that may have been descendants! So, that might be ancients in south of the Nile, like in Uganda, Rwanda, Tanzania, where the Nile affluents flow, like Akagera (Rwanda/Tanzania), Nyabarongo river in Rwanda, and others less important that feed the Nile!!
Also, There are traditional physical facts: long-horn cows in Uganda and Rwanda can be found on the pyramids walls, left ou there thousands years ago! There also are identical physiological human traits around Sudanese (may be sncient Nubians), Ethiopid populations (the horn), Ugandans (,Near Lac Victoria. Hey! The source of Nile River!!!!l) and Rwandans (Hamitic/Niolotic-like features, darker-skinned and tall.people; maybe the tallest anywhere!) Clearly, some features are seen on pyramid drawings. It's just an observation! I'm not a historian, but I love it!
Conclusion: kemetic people were dark skins; they may be dispersed throughout Africa, due to various events: invasions (empire, kindoms weakened), declines of populations, migrations, or even the desire to resettle elsewhere; to reestablish the remnants of old kindoms. Anything goes!

Of course they were dark skinned, but it's also true that there were (and are) different shades of black. In many Egyptian depictions we can clearly see how the Nubians/Kush were painted with as very dark skinned, almost full black, while the Egyptian themselves were brownish.
Even in the West not all Caucasians are the same color and yet they are all white. It goes from very white white like in Sweden to tanned white like in Sicily! And this was already the case in Antiquity. In Africa from north to south before the invasions of Indo-Europeans and Asians it was the same. And yes, there is also a color palette in Africa. There are very dark Africans and others very light, sometimes within the same family.
Caucasians have many different shades of skin. Wait for it, I know this might freak you out, but Caucasians tan. Ancient Egyptians had different skin colors depending on what they did. Royals were white, workers dark.
Look at their artwork. Also, DNA don't lie.

As far as Nubia being the origin of Egyptian kingship. This info challenges that.
Many people view Nubia as where Egyptian kingship started. This idea is based on the Qustul incense burner found in Nubia.
This info is on a falcon figurine found in the Egyptian city of Hierakonpolis. It's dated to have been made around 3700 B.C. The falcon was associated with kingship in Egypt. So this figurine demonstrates that kingship was already present in Egypt before the Qustul burner(3200 B.C). That incense burner could likely be an Egyptian import into Nubia.

Accordingly, to the Greek philosopher Diodorus, states
how the Ethiopians and Egiptians are in fact the same people.
"and upon his return to Greece, they gathered around and
asked, "tell us about this great land of the blacks called
Ethiopia 'and Herodotus said, there are two great Ethiopian
nations, one is Sind (India) and the other in Egypt.Sir Richard Francis Burton, a 19th century English explorer, writer and linguist in 1883 wrote to Gerald Massey, "You are quite right about the "AFRICAN" origin of the Egyptians. I have 100 human skulls to prove it."
Ancient Egyptians were proven to have the same DNA as Somalis and Ethiopians, E1b1b. Modern day Egyptians have 50% of that DNA, the rest is Arab, and European ancestry. Greeks and Macedonians and Albanians have 50% of that same DNA. Hitler also had that DNA, which has been proven in recent genetic testing.
The Greek historian Herodotus says:
"the Colchian certainly appear to be of Egyptian origin, which indeed before I had conversed with any on the subject I had always believed. But I was desirous of being satisfied. I interrogated the people of both countries and the results were, it seems that Colchian had better remembrance of the Egyptian than the Egyptians had to Colchian. The Egyptians were of the opinion that the Colchians were descended from the troops of Sesostris' army, To this i
was also inclined, because they were black and their hair was short and curled."
The scientist Volney says:
"The ancient Egyptians were real Negroid of the same species with all the natives of Africa and though as it might be expected, after mixture
for many ages with the Greeks and Romans, they have lost their identity of their first color, yet they still retain
strong marks of their first conformation"
Rallingsons, in his book "History of Egypt" on page 24
states: "it is even conceivable that the Egyptians were produced by a gradual advance and amelioration from black roots peculiarities, the Egyptians were an African race, in the eastern and even in the central parts of Africa. We shall trace the existence of various groups in physical character, early resembling the Egyptians and it would be difficult to observe a gradual deviation among many African nations of thal continent from the physical type of the Egyptians to the strongly marked character of the Negro, without any very decided break of interruption"
As for the Origins of the Greece Civilization:
G.W. Parker (1917,1918) used anthropological, archaeological, historical and classical sources to prove that blacks once lived in the Aegean. Parker (1917,1918) used the Greek classics to prove that the Pelasgians were of African origin. He also discussed the origin stories about the Pelasgic founders of selected Grecian cities and proved that these men were blacks and not Indo-Europeans. Parker (1917, pp.341-42) also observed that “the great Grecian epics are epics of an African people and Helen, the cause of the Trojan war, must henceforth be conceived as a beautiful brown skin girl” . These Africans sailed to the Greece from North Africa. I have books and books of sources. Step into the arena

Egypt is at the nexus point between Africa and the Middle East. 1) So identities we use are modern and do not apply to the past.
2) I believe Egypt was a place where the black south and west met the returning white north and Indian & Arab east .
3) It would have had been a city started by mostly traveller who mixed and mingled, each Egyptian would have a totally different DNA make-up from the next.
4) Egypt is not a skin colour or certain DNA or biological traits. It is a culture, a mixture of culture, the centre where the world meet.
5) If there were ever locals they would have been few following the Nile from South of Africa and probably got outnumbered and their identity lost into the diversity that followed, from the he west, North and East.
6) No one at the time would have had ancestoral claim to Egypt as Everyone was mostly migrators, travellers, except those who got to be Born there.
7) We all know the Nile River was the main attraction. And the fertile black soils in the banks of the river.
8) The country would have been unique in it's mixed culture, everyone passing by would fit in in the diversity, should have been a very accepting city, were everyone had opportunity to be free and express themselves and thrive to their best.
9) Those who went back to their nations were impressed and tried to implement the Egyptian systems
10) The city was a Super power a hidden germ , where everyone who heard of Egypt wanted to visit the city at least once in their life time.
Ruler who heard of Egypt, I am sure had two thoughts come to their minds.
First that of fear, of thinking of a nation stronger than theirs, that could possibly challenge them. But I don't believe Egypt had any expansion ambitions beyond the Nile and the sea, it liked being what it was, until the power hungry came.
The second thought would have been that of wanting to conquer Egypt and rule over it.
Power struggles to take over Egypt could have been common, in a Land where Everyone was a foreigner. Changes in rulers could have been common.
11) But initially could have been a true non centralised democracy, where everyone was free to do whatever as long as they don't interfere with other in a negative way, and everyone respected each other regardless of their looks, origin, or standing. Their systems of leadership different from what we know today.
12) It is the wise, the confident, the strong, the outcasts, the criminal who usually would have made up most initial people of the Egypt.
13) In modern terms I can say the city was made up of smart people, it was the silicon valley of that time, home of science, technology and engineering
14) Ideas from all over the world were abundant, and people had the courage to work on them, some fail and others succeeded. Egypt was not just a place where people met it was a city where ideas met, mixed and expand.
15) Most of these ideas would have been denied and suppressed in their nations of origin because they would have been radical new ideas, but Egypt allowed them to flourish. Egypt was a World leader in ideas and new technology, Egypt became a source of inspiration influence for other nations, North, South, East and West.
16) Earliest use of numbers, writing and records keeping is from Egypt.
full writing, using the rebus principle → bookkeeping, instruction, commemoration, scripture, prayer, historical records, organic medicinal remedies from herbal wines (Egypt)
17) These nations that Egypt inspired are the Romans, the Indians, the Arabs, the Jews, the Greek, the Africans and more.
Nations which then shaped our modern values and systems today. Most of them directly and indirectly had their origin from Egypt.
18) All the modern principles of Government, Democracy, Freedom, justice, Human rights, economic, maths, science, medicine, architecture, astronomy, astrology, time, calendar, religion all should have had their origin from Egypt, because those principles, would not have been started or practiced anywhere else at the time other than Egypt. Egypt was an epicenter of human development.
19) Egypt is the mother of the modern world.
20) Egypt was the only first true diverse multicultural and racial city, to allow such principles to initiate and its survival should have been pinned in such values.
The Greek, Indians, Arabs, Romans, Jews, the Africans and other nations saw the benefits of these values and systems in Egypt and went and planted ideas in their nations, initiating debates, and challenges which influenced and changed those nations.
21) From there We are here were we are Now. Each of Us has some Egyptian DNA in us through the influence Egypt had and still have on us, whether we know it or not, some claimed advanced western concepts which are foundations of men are Egyptian. i.e Time, seasons, and calendar we use today is Egyptian in origin.
22) Those are my thoughts.
23) As always and as everyone else then and now, we still all at least want to visit Egypt once in our lifetime, that spirit still exists.
24) I am yet to make my visit to Egypt. I hope this Covid-19 pandemic that a almost two years now ends soon.
To see all its beauty, You wouldn't want to visit Egypt during a pandemic. Most of its beauty lies in its people.

They most likely were looking like modern-day Egyptians: from white to brown to dark to black. This fixation on what color they were never ceases to amaze me
The first line of evidence in favor of an African origin of Egyptian civilization comes from the Egyptians themselves. They called their land "Kamit," i.e., "the Black Land," and their own name for themselves was "Kamiu," which translates literally as "the Blacks." Their word for the African lands to the south of them was "Khenti" -- "Khentiu" denoting the Sudanic peoples who lived there -- and this is also their word for "first, foremost, beginning, origin, chief"
Moreover, whenever Egyptian inscriptions refer to Egyptian origins, the land of Punt -- present-day Somalia and northern Kenya -- is pointed to as the ancestral homeland. One word for inner Africa, "yau," is the same as their word for "old," making inner Africa "the old country" of immigration. Inner Africa also was Ta-Neter, "the Land of the Gods." Everything about the interior of Africa evoked in the Egyptians a sense of awe, reverence and nostalgia.
Additional evidence of Egypt's origins comes from the geneaology of Noah in Genesis. Noah's three sons are Ham, Shem and Japeth, the ancestors of the three main branches of humankind known to the biblical writers. Ham is indubitably the ancestor of the black race; his name comes from the Egyptian "kam" meaning "black." His sons are Misraim (Egypt), Cush (Ethiopia), Canaan (Palestine) and Phut (Punt or East Africa). Though allegorical on one level, the Old Testament writers were accurately reflecting known ethnic relationships of antiquity by placing the Egyptians in the black or African branch of humanity.
Finally, unequivocal statements on the subject come from the Greek writers of antiquity. Herodotus -- an eyewitness -- makes the most definitive statement when he compares the Egyptians, by virtue of their black skin and woolly hair, to the Colchians and Ethiopians. There are nearly a dozen other surviving references in Greek literature to the race and color of the Egyptians, from writers as diverse as Aeschylus, Aristotle and Strabo, and they unanimously confirm the remarks of Herodotus. The fact that the Egyptians were black and African was so completely self-evident to the ancient Greeks that it was a commonplace seldom worthy of special notice.
ln 1980 Bruce Williams, of the University of Chicago's Oriental Institute, discovered artifacts -- originally recovered in 1962 prior to the opening of the Aswan Dam -- from a pharoaonic kingship in Nubia (northeast Africa) 300 years before the first Egyptian dynasty. With that discovery, the Afrophobic Egyptology born of the 19th century has become a scholarship in retreat.
Sudan and Egypt was once one major Empire. The ancient artifacts explain it all and if one were to travel to Sudan today, would see the remnants of the Ancient Kemet culture
Apt!
This is ignorance
Kimet = Egypt
Kush = Sudan
Two separate kingdoms until the Kushites overthrew the Pharaohs and served as Pharaoh themselves for several Dynasties before being defeated by Assyrians and retreating back South to Kush. Then came the rise of Habrash; i.e., Abasynia and/or Ethiopia..which defeated Kush all together.
This was my response to @Binod Grg and it hits on your points you posit in your comments...
Yes it did... And they were all African. Its depicted in the hieroglyphs...you see Sudanese/Kushites....people of all different hues and shades of black and brown...none were White though. And take this. Have you ever thought that the current political boundaries of what we now know as Egypt were not the original political boundaries had you even thought or fathomed the idea that Kermit....not Egypt (that's so Eurocentric); Habash...not Ethiopia and Kush...not Sudan; all encompassed much more of the the continent then they do this present day. The current manmade political boundaries and the names we call them, have only been in existence since The Conference of Berlin of 1884...the Raking and Partitioning of Africa. The continent was nit even called Africa prior to this time.
Kimet being so mich larger than depicted today would male so much sense. Since there has never been any documentation of Kimet having any slaves....the ceremonies and acts of paying homage to the Pharaohs in hieroglyphs could reasonably imply those people with various concentrations of melanin in their skins we subjects of the Pharoahs...not slaves. In fact-the really dark and onyx colored person's in many hieroglyphs were Sub-Suharran and/or people from Kush (Kushites) who overthrew Pharoahs at one point and ruled Kimet in their own right for several Dynasties. Tutankhamun and Nefertiti two of said Kushites. Threw that in for Goode measure. The Assyrians were people from Habrash and/or Abyssinia (Ethiopia) who migrated out of Africa to start their own Kingdom and eventually created the Ottoman Empire who gave rise to those other famous bronze and onyx skin colored folks called the Moors.
Nevertheless; Kimet's borders and Kingdom span well into Sub-Saharan Africa. That is one of my theories.. Here is the second. On the continent of Africa, the only place where limestone is in abundance is in South Central Africa... Ancient people from Kimet commissioned this same limestone in the building of the Great Pyramids... They were able to freely source this limestone from the quarries in and around Lake Victoria to which the White and Blue Nile Rivers feed into and flow from. And due to the rapids in six places in the Nile, could only be navigable a few months out of the year so this took a lot of patience and time building those wonders of the world. So Kimet's Kingdom encompassed and they controlled the waterways if the mighty Nile which was their thoroughfare to transport such huge amounts of that limestone from South Central Africa to where the Pyramids remain today, in Giza.
