The Europeans came into Africa with their model of how society should be organised. Thus they were looking for kings, queens, palace jesters, noblemen, serfs, slaves etc. Where they found these structures, conquest was easy because all they had to do was defeat the king/queen and everything fell into place. But in Iboland, they found a very large area with completely differed king of organization and thy were stunned. They branded it "stateless" with the inherent assumption of racial superiority. At one stage, they even thought that the Obi of Aboh in the River Niger was the king of the Ibos! But they soon found out about the resilience of the Ibo system when the kingdoms/states fell under colonial rule like a pack of cards. But in Iboland, they had to fight one village after another and pacify them one by one and the fight continued until the Aro expedition of 1901-02, Ekumeku war of 1883-1914 and beyond. Some areas in present day Ebonyi State remained unconquered until after Nigeria's independence.
