A legit athletic phenomenon. He wasn’t big, but that jumping, those reflexes, that hand-eye, and that SPEED. That’s that Miami speed, you can’t replicate Ed Reed. True legend.
The thing that always sticks out when watching Reed is his momentum after catching an interception. He could bait a bad throw better than any safety to play the game. Watching him get an interception and immediately be at full speed is a testament to his preparation, anticipation, and natural instincts at the position. It was a pleasure being a ravens fans when defense was an institution in Baltimore. Not to say we don't field great defenses anymore, but there was an electricity when Ray and Ed were on the field together. Those defenses always felt like they were greater than the sum of their parts, and Ray and Ed put average guys in position to make incredible plays they had no business making. Just look at how many defensive players left Baltimore to chase contracts during those years and the vast majority never could replicate the success they had in Baltimore. To be so talented those two were incredibly selfless players and I think that is what transcends them above equally talented players. I'm so glad we finally got Ed a ring.
@Frank Mclain For sure. I meant no disrespect to Suggs. I just don't believe he's as important to those mid-2000s defenses as they were. Suggs is a hall-of-famer no doubt, but he's not a generational talent.
Justin Bigger i agree with everything except for that last. Suggs is a generational talent, watch his 2011 season he was going against the best lineman while getting double teamed AND chipped, and still won DPOTY. Injuries slowed down suggs
@@Ryan.granneman I agree about Suggs as well and he was definitely the final leg of the triangle of leadership that existed on those units. He's still a great player at 36. Obviously his snaps are limited, but every team that prepares for the Ravens have to use time and resources game planning for him, and that's more precious than any further accolades he could receive. A FEW years ago I wasn't sure he was going to have the longevity to be a HOFer, but there's no doubt in my mind he gets in now.
Ronnie Lott was a little better at big hits and some shit you can’t do in today’s NFL but Reed had the hit stick too, along wit better coverage skills.

@@NganKriete Because we didn’t really need an offense 😂. That defense was absurd. Ray, Ed, Haloti, Trevor, McCallister, Suggs…. You didn’t have a choice but to try to throw it deep with Ray and the boys sniffing out runs and play action.
When Bill Belichick game plans for a safety and when he also says if he was on his team that he'd never take him off a certain phase of the game ever, that's saying something about a player.
Belichick has never had an athletic freak at safety like Reed, but he has still managed to produce damn good ones. Sure he has had HOF and pro bowlers at S, but they weren't athletic freaks like Ed Reed. They were hardworkers who listened and got the most out of their talent. Imagine if Belichick had a guy like Reed. Reed would have probably put up even bigger numbers.
@@faveology That athleticism was backed with breaking down reams of videos and note taking. As Yogi Berra said, which can be applied to life in general, " fifty percent of this game is ninety percent mental."
The defensive personnel on those early 2000s Ravens teams were just amazing. Looking back on it now you have to view them as being comparable to those old Steelers teams of the '70s. Ed Reed won one helluva talent.
If they had even a serviceable QB in the 2000s, they could have been the team of the decade instead of the Patriots. It sucks that so many great defenses were wasted because of garbage QB play.
Privilege and an honor to get to watch Ed Reed play every Sunday as a Ravens fan. That man is the best Free Safety I've ever seen personally with my two eyes. All others Safties can only be compared to him and his skills. My favorite Raven of all time, want to thank Ed Reed for all the great memories.
He'll be in next year. 2 years in a row that a raven great will be a first ballot headliner entry. As good as the ravens defense is today, they'll never be what they were from 2001-2012.
I loved seeing the brawls they got into but now as much as I want to see it I don't really wanna risk injuries for the Ravens players that we do have lol the rivalry this szn is non-existent tbh
A lot of football fans like to say Sean Taylor is the best but there we’ll never be anyone quite like Ed Reed ever again. He is the definition of “Playmaker” he changed the game. I’m so proud of this man for what he has done on and off the field. The GOAT of Safeties🙌
Ed Reed was at the U before Sean T. He also mentored him. S.T. not even in Ed Reeds category..And that includes hitting or ball hawking..Reed is the Michael Jordan of Safeties
Taylor was just about to hit God mode b4 his passing. He was bigger, stronger but had to learn the "game" and sharpen instinct. Even Ed said Taylor was the Him.

@@akthephantom4833 You're seriously banking on the few times Ed Reed returned punts? The others would be somewhat of an argument with the defensive player of the year being the only one with any merit. But let's compare. Ronnie Lott made two all decade teams vs Reed's one. Lott won four super bowls vs Reed's 2 Lott made 10 pro bowls to Reed's 9 Lott was a first team all pro 8 times to Reed's 5 Lott has an actual trophy given to the best college safety named after him. But no tell me about Reed the few times he returned a punt.
@@akthephantom4833 Its really not. You have one guy who's clearly better. Lott literally changed the way defenses are played. He allowed schemes like Nickel packages or 4-2-5 defenses to work. The guy award wise is better than Reed. I lived through both guys and Lott is better by far.
When he came back to Baltimore when he played for the Jets, the whole stadium erupted with “Reeeed” when he made a good play even though he was in green.
Interception Get Down ! Get Down ! *Breaks tackle, Keeps running Coach: Oh God , Dang it Ed 🤦🏿♂️ 50 yards, 60 yards, Still running Coach :: Go Ed ... Go Ed...👏🏿🗣🗣🗣
The Ravens are just mind blowing. Been in the league for only 25 years, and they have drafted the all time greats at several positions already: - Ogden, LT - R. Lewis, ILB - Reed, S - Tucker, K Not to mention all the other guys who will have to settle for HoF, instead of being the best ever at the position: Suggs, Ngata, Priest Holmes, Yanda, possibly Brandon Williams, and Marlon Humphrey, Andrews and Lamar Jackson well on their way. That doesn't even count guys like Flacco, Rice, Jamal Lewis, Heap, McAlister, etc tc etc. Unbelievable how much talent this organization has identified and developed in such a short time span.
Which is the real reason why Cleveland still despises Art Modell so much. The Ravens actually had good scouting and player development while the Browns didn't.
5:36 One of my best Ravens memories is that pick six against the Eagles. I was at the game with my dad. I was jumping on my seat. Loved watching him play. 🐐
Ed Reed had super human route jumping literally no one else in the NFL has come close to him at the safety position. His ability to steal the ball was super human
eighnasa If there are two qualities you want in a free safety, it’s ballhawking coverage skills and the ability to make tackles once they break second-level. There are arguably many safeties who could tackle as well or better than Reed, but NOBODY had better high-safety coverage skills than Reed. Dawkins did a lot for Philly (thanks in part to Jim Johnson’s diverse defense, blitzing anyone from anywhere), but lacked the freakish ballhawkish talent that Reed had. Reed played something like 50 games less than Weapon X, but ended up with almost double his interception total. But don’t take my word for it, instead look at the countless players and coaches, from Ronnie Lott to Troy Polamalu to Bill Belichick who said Reed was the GOAT.
As a Baltimore Native, and proud carrier of the Reed name; I miss watching the master at work. There was no better feeling that jumping out of your seat, screaming GO ED... GO ED....
Damn I even hate the comparison with this do with Polamalu. Everything Polamalu did this guy did better. And then he did everything else Polamalu couldn't do. The best all-time. Save it steeler fans. You had a great safety, be happy. But he didn't hold a candle to Ed Reed. Just the facts
only thing polamalu did better than reed was the ability to time the snap of the ball jump the line and get a big tackle other than that i agree reed was better, and imo the best safety ever
Timing the snap is still arguable if you take into account how Ed was used on special teams. Knowing that, if he was on the line of scrimmage like Troy he might have made similar plays. But what isn't arguable is troys marketability. That man could sell some shampoo!! 😂
3:15 What in the world was #47 doing? If he would have just paid attention and stuck the block instead of staring at Reed, that would have been an easy touchdown, and no flag.
What can I say about Ed Reed. Just the most dominant safety every (in my opinion). This guy was unbelievable. You would have had to see it for yourself. I've only seen a few defensive players who could impose their will whenever he wanted. I swear this man had a gps on the ball. He demanded attention. Let's not forget that this guy tackled with conviction. My favorite safety of all time. There will never be another.
This guy looked like a receiver most nights. Super fast and hands with grip but his timings on hits was perfect. He’d catch so many guys just at the right time when they were off balance. That is skill.
The GOAT! Do not try to talk no Polamalu shit to me, I respect the HELL outta Troy but he ain't Ed! Yes, if u are a Steelers fan I expect u to feel differently lol
Jewpac Shakur Ed has the INT numbers over Troy but honestly...all I see is great INT and amazing returns in meaningless games, Troy showed up come playoff time. Big games for the division and in the playoffs. Who showed up? Troy. Ed was was too busy getting whacked by Hines Ward on blocks. Both all time greats and played different positions. Ed played SS for a bit but was a better FS with his ball hawk skills. Troy was a beast in the box and could make plays anywhere and could tackle a hell of a lot better then Ed reed could. Watch Steelers and Ravens highlights and tell me who the better player was in this games....I’ll wait
Troy was the best tackler at the position and maybe the best athlete at his position...ever. The man had a 43" vert at 220 and ran a 4.4 forty. Go look at how fast he got to the ball carrier, he was like a bullet. You really can't compare both of them since they play different positions (they have different roles in their respective schemes) and they both have unique skill sets.
Wasn’t the biggest, the strongest, or the fastest but he sure made it look like he was all three.. Also the greatest open field runner I’ve ever seen with the exception of MAYBE Devin Hester. Looking back, it seems I haven’t watched much football since he retired. This guy really was a marvel to watch and is hands down my favorite player of all time..
In College too, at Miami, they were incredible, and Shawn Taylor also from Miami was even better, but his carrier was stopped by a bullet or he would have been right there with Ed as the two best safeties ever. Take a look at some Shawn Taylor highlights.
It wasn't just that he was a ballhawk, its that when he got the ball in his hand he had a nose for the endzone. It was a remarkable thing to watch, best safety i ever saw.
Gotta love the second guessing from everyone in this video 😂. The commentators. The coaches. Relax...he's special. He doesnt play by normal football player rules. Once in a lifetime instincts and the field vision of a RB. Shit was scary
Reeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeed ! Whenever I'm depressed about what John Harbaugh has done to my Ravens, I put on some Ed Reed or Ray Lewis highlights ! GOD I MISS MY OLD RAVENS....
@Yeshua Dean yeah, Im over here saying "didn't we make the playoffs 5 years straight with him as starting head coach, how many other coaches have that claim, and with Flacco as QB"
Ed had it all - the brains, the cold dedication, the instincts, the hands, the speed, the hard tackles, the slipperiness, the personality, everything. He would have revolutionized the FS position if anybody could even begin to do what he did. The idea of both him and Ray being on the same squad is ridiculous. Baltimore has always been my favorite non-home team and Ed was a big reason why.
He is also the only player to have a kickoff, punt return, field goal block, fumble recovery, INT, and punt block all go for a touchdown. this man could do it all
And considering how many players have played the game, and he is THE ONLY one to do that, shows more than anything that he is the greatest safety of all time.

A legit athletic phenomenon. He wasn’t big, but that jumping, those reflexes, that hand-eye, and that SPEED. That’s that Miami speed, you can’t replicate Ed Reed. True legend.
The safety version of Deion 💯🤷🏿♂️
He from louisiana not Miami
I feel so blessed to have been able to watch and support this ravens team with a defense full of GOATS for so many years.

"GOD DANG IT, ED!"
@@Ryan.granneman Suggs was great, but he's not reed or lewis, chill with that.
@Frank Mclain if you mention suggs you have to mention chris mccalister and ngata
very glad he was able to get a ring with the Ravens. He will be missed. Best safety in the history of the NFL.
Joshua Day ever heard of Ronnie Lott?
Ronnie Lott was a little better at big hits and some shit you can’t do in today’s NFL but Reed had the hit stick too, along wit better coverage skills.
Jesus mother of mary fuckin Christ..... Yes we all know who ronnie lot is. He was a great safety and one of the greatest of all time. In our opinion ed reed was the greatest safety of all time. Go comment on some lot videos please and get a fucking life.
They had the same amount of interceptions and Lott has way more tackles, ff and sacks
You dont know
The love that Ravens D had for one another is a small reason why they were as great as they were.
Suggs to Reed “You’re the greatest safety ever, pleasure to play beside you”..

My favorite safety of all time. I don't think there will ever be another one like him
"The rookie making a mistake" lol Ed until 2008 had no offense, the D was the O.
2006 ravens were savage
@@matthiaskirby7654 true story, McNair was so drunk for that playoff game against manning many in Baltimore think he was high throughout the game as well. Like he basically got high to not be hungover, for a home playoff game. Dude had some demons...
Well on that play he definitely should get down.. Going down wins the game up by 5 with seconds left. It’s actually quite selfish to chase a TD. Goat saftey though.
@@bjornwallberg-beutelrock4815 I disagree, that's just the way he plays. I guarantee that enitre locker room wasn't upset not going down
@@NganKriete Because we didn’t really need an offense 😂.
@@faveology if Belichick had Ed Reed Brady would've never had time to develop his qb skills as Reed would constantly be making pick 6's 😂
Agreed. So many quality players. Ray, Ed, Boulware, Adams, Suggs, Ngata, McAlister, Pryce, A.Thomas, Burnett, the list goes on.
If they had even a serviceable QB in the 2000s, they could have been the team of the decade instead of the Patriots. It sucks that so many great defenses were wasted because of garbage QB play.
goldenraven20 The early 2000s Dolphins come to mind.
2006 Ravens defense was LOADED that was the year all 3 levels had multiple pro bowl players
and we even had a good QB in McNair.
The original ball hawk. We love you Ed, thank you for all the great years you have gave us.
Not a Ravens fan but Ed Reed was a monster... One of the greatest defensive players of all time...

He should be going to the Hall soon
Lol, he's going to be first ballot.

First ballot too
He's eligible next year. Ray retired in 2012 but Ed played that one extra year that we'd all like to forget.
He'll be in next year.
2 years in a row that a raven great will be a first ballot headliner entry.
As good as the ravens defense is today, they'll never be what they were from 2001-2012.
Steelers ravens in the 2000s was such a great rivalry
My favorite as Ravens fan. Games were usually low scoring wars.
Best. 😂😂😂 Sean would of been great but not better
Taylor was just about to hit God mode b4 his passing. He was bigger, stronger but had to learn the "game" and sharpen instinct. Even Ed said Taylor was the Him.
Ed reed is one of my favorite safety's. I really look up to this man even if he's retired.
It was an honor and a privilege to have Ed on our team. I'm glad he got a ring, because by Unitas, did he ever deserve one.

Ed Reed, Brian Dawkins, Troy Polamalu, and Sean Taylor. I am truly grateful to see 4 HOF Safeties all play in my lifetime.
Nothing but Goosebumps watching this guy!
I think Ed reed being such a good safety made Ray Lewis' job much easier and vice versa. pretty symbiotic relationship there between 2 HOFers
The whole defense was great, which makes anyone's job easier.
3 HOFers Terrell Suggs too.
Bro the end of this video just hit my soul. I was at the ring of honor game for Ed Reed against the rams and this moment was so intense and I'll never forget it. Gave me chills
Greatest safety ever just because of his playmaking, game breaking ability. First ballot hall of famer
Watch Ronnie Lott. He literally changed the position.
@@osu5inarow ronnie lott didnt return punts for tds or hold records for longest defensive tds or won a dpoy. Correct me if im wrong
@@akthephantom4833 You're seriously banking on the few times Ed Reed returned punts? The others would be somewhat of an argument with the defensive player of the year being the only one with any merit. But let's compare.
Ronnie Lott made two all decade teams vs Reed's one.
Lott won four super bowls vs Reed's 2
Lott made 10 pro bowls to Reed's 9
Lott was a first team all pro 8 times to Reed's 5
Lott has an actual trophy given to the best college safety named after him.
But no tell me about Reed the few times he returned a punt.
@@osu5inarow i cant debate that. But i still stand by my opinion. LeBron vs jordan type shit
@@akthephantom4833 Its really not. You have one guy who's clearly better. Lott literally changed the way defenses are played. He allowed schemes like Nickel packages or 4-2-5 defenses to work. The guy award wise is better than Reed. I lived through both guys and Lott is better by far.
When he came back to Baltimore when he played for the Jets, the whole stadium erupted with “Reeeed” when he made a good play even though he was in green.
i have to admit that I feel lucky, REAL lucky to be a Raven fan during Ed's career. ANYTIME he was on the field I was on the edge of my seat.

There will never be another Ed Reed, one of the absolute safeties to ever play the game.
The Ravens are just mind blowing. Been in the league for only 25 years, and they have drafted the all time greats at several positions already:
- Ogden, LT
- R. Lewis, ILB
- Reed, S
- Tucker, K
Not to mention all the other guys who will have to settle for HoF, instead of being the best ever at the position:
Suggs, Ngata, Priest Holmes, Yanda, possibly Brandon Williams, and Marlon Humphrey, Andrews and Lamar Jackson well on their way.
He picked up loose balls like a shortstop. Great great player.
Finally ed reed highlight tape
5:36 One of my best Ravens memories is that pick six against the Eagles. I was at the game with my dad. I was jumping on my seat. Loved watching him play. 🐐
Ed Reed had super human route jumping literally no one else in the NFL has come close to him at the safety position. His ability to steal the ball was super human
He never stole a ball in his career. He earned every one of them.

Ed was a walking pick six... he's literally what every team tries to look for in a FS. Speed, awareness, work ethic & ofc, ball hawk skills.
Ed Reed greatest safety of all time 🐐
You could definitely say Ronnie Lott but I’d say Ed Reed
I don’t consider Brian Dawkins and Ed Reed on the same level even though I have much respect for Weapon X
If Sean Taylor wouldn't of died it maybee be a different story
eighnasa If there are two qualities you want in a free safety, it’s ballhawking coverage skills and the ability to make tackles once they break second-level.
Lmao those last 2 INT returns with the Jets let you know he said “Ight it’s time to hang it up” 😂😂😂
As a Baltimore Native, and proud carrier of the Reed name; I miss watching the master at work. There was no better feeling that jumping out of your seat, screaming GO ED... GO ED....
Suggs, Lewis, and Reed. When the Baltimore defense was unstoppable. As much as I love the Ravens now, it was a different feeling back then.
Watching him set the int yards almost made me tear
Thats why being a ravens fan is worth it the true 2008 MVP
I just did myself I loved this team for 20 years
Damn I even hate the comparison with this do with Polamalu. Everything Polamalu did this guy did better. And then he did everything else Polamalu couldn't do. The best all-time. Save it steeler fans. You had a great safety, be happy. But he didn't hold a candle to Ed Reed. Just the facts
Deep.
only thing polamalu did better than reed was the ability to time the snap of the ball jump the line and get a big tackle other than that i agree reed was better, and imo the best safety ever
Timing the snap is still arguable if you take into account how Ed was used on special teams. Knowing that, if he was on the line of scrimmage like Troy he might have made similar plays. But what isn't arguable is troys marketability. That man could sell some shampoo!! 😂
And yet Troy has better stats in everything other than picks, AND Troy played less games, but ok
@@andreashley6084 that's great

You know he was the best safety when Peyton Manning is still amazed to this day when Ed reed picked him off
Suggs: you’re the greatest safety ever.
Reed: you’re a linebacker.
