- As Rush fans remember the late, great Neil Peart (1952-2020), CBC Archives looks back to a 1979 news report on the band, which features the drummer talking about why it was hard for Rush to get on the radio in the band's early days.

"Rush Rules" was carved into my desk by some bored fellow student. One listen and I immediately agreed.
@@simpleforces9576 He was right. ❤️❤️
So wise and well spoken. Really admire how he lived life.
Neil's passing makes me hate the music industry in 2023 even more. Rock needs to be central to our culture again
Look up the Punk Rock MBA Podcast and listen to his episode with Johnny Franck. That'll answer how rock can become center stage again
@Jom James Uhhhh ever heard of Avenged Sevenfold, Greta Van Fleet, All That Remains, Green Day
and the fact that Warped Tour existed for 25 years and also the fact that there's multiple touring shows going around. Go watch The Punk Rock MBA. That'll teach you everything about the newer rock music
You can thank Bill Clinton for deregulating the music industry thus allowing 200 companies to be consolidated into 6
@@pjuliano9000 Look up Punk Rock MBA's interview with Our Last Night. You don't need labels anymore. Also look up Dayshell's Mr. Pain album. Whole thing was crowd funded.
@Jom James Greta Van FLeet is what Led Zeppelin would sound like if Robert Plant had a very limited vocal range.
Welp that’s about all that needs said......RUSH just refused to lower the standard they set for themselves....and that is awesome
I wish there was more of this interview! Sounds like it was prematurely cut off
I thought I'd seen just about every Rush clip. Never seen this one before.
The remainder of the archive is largely concert footage, which we don't have the rights to distribute, unfortunately.
Thank you for clearing that up! It’s always neat coming across new footage or photos of our heroes 😉
Do you know where the performance in this clip was filmed?
This was recorded August 24, 1979 at Wynn Stadium in Hamilton, Ontario.
“One likes to believe
In the freedom of music
But glittering prizes
And endless compromises
Shatter the illusion
Of integrity, yeah”
One of my all time faves! Nothing puts me in a better mood than that song! The lyrics are fantastic!
Amen to that. The three guys in Rush believed in themselves. They never compromised their music, and were never drawn to the glittering prizes of the music industry. They were all about integrity (Neil's lyrics in the Spirit of Radio says it all). Rush's music was real, which is why they were together for over 40 years. Neil, you will be greatly missed.
Exit the warrior...RIP, Neil.
Just saying those lyrics gives you chills
Nice!
A rare high quality performance video of Rush from the 70’s, with Neil talking! This certainly left me wanting more! .......
Me too!
Agreed...a young Neil sounding like his older self! My mother would have said, "what a nice young man...pity his hair is so long!"
One of the most cerebral, historically-informed and savvy rock bands ever. Articulate men, brilliant, lyrical, great literature lyrics. And AMAZING MUSIC. God Rest your SOUL Mr. PEART. Thanks for all the entertainment.
I'm glad that rush were never given top of the pops style celebrity.they were a band that had to be found by people who would truly appreciate them, and that's why they had so many true fans.
Thus achieving a kind of immortality . Fairwell to the kings.
You're absolutely correct. Nothing that unique can be everyone's cup of tea. They mined so much previously unexplored sonic territory.
Little did they know that they were gonna change so many lives.
The great neil peart
In 1979 I had listened to every RUSH album dozens of times. Keep in mind, there was no internet and the only song played on US stations was "Closer to the Heart." Their popularity grew with high school and college students simply by word of mouth. Saw my first concert at the Spectrum in Philadelphia, September 25, 1980 for the "Permanent Waves" tour. It was sold out.
@Dave Batts Besides "Closer to the Heart played on the radio, "The Trees" were also in heavy heavy rotation on the radio in 1979
Until Tom Sawyer hit No. 10 in the UK charts, Rush were never played on British radio. Since then, I've only ever heard that and Spirit of Radio broadcast less times than I have fingers. Word of mouth spreads greatness, biased media only spreads propaganda. That's what made Rush so special, that's what made Rush 'ours'.
I believe it. Kind of like Metallica and Iron Maiden in the 80's who weren't played much(if at all)on the radio earlier on but still sold tons of albums. With the possible exception of Pink Floyd most of the upper echelon prog rock bands(of which Rush could be considered one of) weren't played much on the radio either yet still could reach fans who were willing to listen.
that tour was my first time I saw them. in maple leaf gardens in Toronto. omg that was so long ago. ultimately THE BEST era of music to live through. I am forever grateful to have been at that peak
Saw them at the Spectrum for Grace Under Pressure and Power Windows tours. Great place for concerts.
Neil was the best of the rest ❤️ going to miss him immensely
I did not know Neil personally, so to say that I miss him is a bit ungracious. However, what I absolutely will miss is how his brilliance evoked so many positive Emotions. He is the inspiration for me and so, so many others to begin hitting a Drum Set. Thank You Alex and Geddy for accompanying him and allowing us to share his Grace!
Sucks to be the stations that didn't play them. R.I.P. Neil.
The first time I heard Rush was on the radio.
@@chrischoir3594 me too. So long ago i can't remember which channel, the song was Finding My Way off their 1st album. I was hooked right away !
I grew up in 70's. Huge Zep fan. Discovered Rush late 74. Saw them live 76 77 78 79 81 etc. 26 times in all. I grew up where Rush were legends in 70's. By early 80's they were played at one of the highest rates around. Probably only Zep and AC/DC were played more
Moving Pictures was the breakthrough album that catapulted Rush into world superstar status. Before that , they had a solid following but overall still sort of under the radar. Tom Sawyer and Limelight gave them consistent AirPlay.
RUSH WORLDS GREATEST 3 PIECE ORCHESTRA, I saw them on the HEMISPHERES TOUR, then every tour after that, till the end, even got
NEIL PEARTS autograph R.I.P. PROFESSOR, I have an original ALL THE WORLDS A STAGE concert t- shirt it's 45 years.old, I just wore it in December at GEDDYS LEE'S EFFIN LIFE book tour in CHICAGO, RUSH ON😊😂
Dear Professor,
I'm writing to you although I know you won't be able to read it, as you're in paradise. I would love to give you my gratitude and heartfelt thank you for your contribution to Rush. Not only as rock's greatest drummer and percussionist. But a man of great integrity and talent. Thank you very much. Always remembered but never forgotten.
We are just so sexy when we are young. RIP
One of Rush's many great attributes is that they were a very hardworking and hungry band. They toured their asses off to be where they were. A lot of metal and punk bands respected how committed they were to being heard, it wasn't just their instrumental prowess.
One of the most loved Drummers in our lifetime . I’m so glad to have been a witness to this amazing spectacle of a drum god 😊 Rest In Peace Neil Peart
I was blessed to view Rush at Bay Fest Sarnia Ontario in the front row Neil Peart gave a true experience of drum solo and expertise of his playing May he rest in peace I will never forget that day
When I saw the R30 show these ladies near me we're yelling Go Neil! They were rooting for him, and just loving what he was doing. You could tell they were long time fans. That concert also, too saw a huge diversity in their fans.
RIP Neil, imagine Rush being "Popular", that would be a strange World indeed
_releases Moving Pictures a year or two later (or even the songs played in this very segment on the new year)_
I saw Rush Southhamton Gaumont 1978 and they were absolutely brilliant wonderful last saw the at The O2 London 2014 and they were still wonderful I am 75 and have been blessed to have lived in an age of such wonderful music and musicians Clapton Page etc etc etc
Miss that man and the knowledge he conveyed everytime he spoke! ✌👍
When Neil shaved the handlebar mustache he looked 20 years younger.
Radio's loss. Our gain.
On my local Classic Rock channel, they always play the same 3 songs every now and then : Limelight, Tom Sawyer and Spirit Of Radio. That's it ! Pathetic ! Well, i have tons of Rush cd's to keep me satisfied lol
@@rickleblanc8900 gotta admit, they are all songs you can crank up the volume and sing loudly and head bang with! :))

Best rock band of all time❤❤❤❤❤
Back when there was no internet or iron on shirt shops, I once took their first album cover under my white t-shirt and traced out RUSH with a black marker.
The ease by which Neil does it makes us think we can do it too. Thanks Neil!
Neil rip brings a smile every time I see a video. Always much appreciated what we all have . Great Canadian 🇨🇦 Music from RUSH. Thank you guys
gosh...what a great era of the band...and trust me I love them all!!
Working Man was the first RUSH song I heard and I was immediately hooked . Imagine my surprise when I found out there were only three musicians.👍👍👍
That whole album was awesome!
I seen rush at memorial on the album caress of steel they were amazing saw for 102 cents memorial hall kcks 70s were good time to be young
Because of the overwhelming fan support, radio could only ignore Rush for so long. It’s also how they got into the Rock and Roll HOF. It’d be nice to see these kinds of things happen for Iron Maiden.
Judas Priest as well
I love & miss you, Neil!! 😥💋
Forever in my heart!! 💘
Aspie Neil.
You did well brother!
RIP Professor. Your illusion of integrity has never been shattered...
Radio stations only played a fraction of there great work.
'their', not 'there'.
Wow… i’d love to hear this whole interview. Is this all we got?
Too good for this world. RUSH- Everything else is pale in comparison
I would give my entire right arm to hear the rest of this interview
Waiting for 30 year. ok it's time to release this footage.
That all changed in '81 of course. Moving Pictures was ALL over the rock stations in T.O.
The world's greatest rock band RUSH has created 19 studio albums , 14 of them platinum and the other 5 gold.
Try to name another rock band who has that outstanding record.
Top that off with 40 years of touring with the best stage show in rock .
Farewell to the King of drummers Neil Peart ....thanks for your amazing lyrics and percussion.
You aren't aware other platinum bands older than Rush are still touring? You like rock but you don't need to live under one
The Beatles and The Rolling Stones
I’m a huge fan for over 40 years and there are other old time bands with similar accomplishments and great stage shows. The Grateful Dead’s concerns are known for years play different songs each night
There HAS to be archival footage of those first few seconds of Rush on stage. How I would love to see that
That shirt. It’s been a year now, and still sad. Rip professor
even in that short interview he could not hide his brilliance
When you're too good, you get pushed aside. Rush forever!!!
RUSH should be treasured in their home country.
Oh they absolutely are. They've been inducted into the Canadian Music Hall of Fame, the Canadian Songwriters Hall of Fame, and they were also awarded the Order of Canada. Not to mention being the recipients of multiple Juno awards (the Canadian equivalent of the Grammys). They also have a star on the Canadian Walk of Fame in Toronto.
They may have had little support and recognition in the beginning but there is no question that time has proven them the victor. There is without question no other band from Canada who has had as much long term impact on the world stage as Rush. They have earned their place because of their hard work and talent, rather than their media coverage.
I loved Rush even more because the mess media completely ignored them. And that was the reason the women didn't care much for Rush...
Miss these guys
Nice editing cbc... symbolic of exactly what he's saying

Boston, MA, USA, radio stations played Rush songs from their beginning; "Working Man", "Fly By Night", "Closer To the Heart". And then baboom! _Permanent Waves_ and _Moving Pictures_ were released to much radio play, even for non singles.
Dude!!! Didn’t know he was still playing the Slingerland black Chrome kit at this time. Thought he already had the Tama mahogany Superstars for Permanent Waves and Moving Pictures!! Love Slingerlands!! 👍
So cool to see a young Neil when he had long hair and was very thin. I still can't believe that he's not here anymore.

A true marvel
Where's the rest?
So how many rush concerts can be on Blu-ray but are not?!
As much as I love RUSH and Neil Peart, hearing Neil talk about their music "polarizing" people seems a bit arrogant seeing how Neil refused to interact in any way with the very people he claims to have helped polarize. A great drummer and writer who suffered terrible tragedy in his life NO DOUBT.........but don't forget, Neil would have nothing to do with the people who made his dream possible. A.K.A. the fans and the money they plopped down. Neil will go down in history as a legendary figure.....as he should.....but his treatment of fans will always be a talking point.
He was a shy person. He put in a lot of hard work and time in the studio and on the stage. That's what the fans paid for. Why do you think he owed us more?
If you read any of his books, you actually get let into his world quite a bit. I don’t think he was mean or arrogant to the fans, he just kept his distance. His desire to keep his private life as such may have made him give off that attitude. He “can’t pretend a stranger is a long awaited friend”, as he wrote in “Limelight”. He became a famous person who never craved fame, and adjusted his behavior accordingly. We can only imagine what it’s like, as someone famous, to have people constantly clamoring to be a part of your life. That might be fun for awhile, but soon would become exhausting, I think.
Oh, cry me a river.
Yea I don’t have any problem with him whatsoever, extremely intelligent people don’t know how to talk to idiots. Period
Neil's reserve is partly the result of having had a bad and scary experience with a fan. Can you blame him for having not wanted to interact deeply with the fans? The way he interacted with fans when he was alive was to write books and give radio and TV interviews. Both Ged and Alex did an excellent job of dealing with fans in person when Neil couldn't.
Saudade do mestre

what kind of a rock star says "consequently" instead of "so".
Captain Sunday the best kind- 😁🤘
An intelligent rock star. Neil Peart, despite having had no formal education beyond high school, was quite literate and erudite. Rush knew who their audience were and played to their strengths. They did well enough in that sphere of endeavour that they didn't need to have mainstream appeal or success.
