I drove home for Christmas in a £200 Renault Safrane

  • Introducing the latest member of the PetrolBlog fleet...
    On the last Saturday before Christmas, PetrolBlog took a train to London to buy a Renault Safrane for £200. Aside from a telephone call and a cursory glance at the MOT history, it was bought pretty much unseen.
    Amazingly, it could have been scrapped, but as you'll see from this amateur video, that would have been a crime. It's a credit to the former owner and an example of why regular maintenance matters.
    For more nonsense about the cars you loved (and the ones you didn't), check out petrolblog.com or follow / majorgav and / petrolblog .
    Thanks for watching.

    I want to see the "Alternative Cut" of this video filmed from the perspective of the multi storey car park security cameras.

    • @Petrolblog
      @Petrolblog  4 роки тому +2

      Haha. I hadn't thought of that. To be fair, the CCTV operators were probably so surprised to see a Safrane had made it to the top floor.

    I didn't realise that yours was a 2.0 version.
    I've watched this video before but after having a drive in a 2.5 executive yesterday I now find myself coming back here.
    The section next to the rear vents a think housed a cigar lighter in the one I drove which was the same year of registration as yours.
    Renault really knocked it out of the park with these.
    Currently showing around twenty odd 2.5 taxed and around 30 in SORN. Other engines seem to be down to single digits though so tours must be much rarer.

    Loved the video, now that I stumbled upon you here too :D Btw, just noticed - the right side blinkers, the ones on the door - shouldn't have that thick plastic around it - it should be borderless blinker, just like the ones used on Laguna MK1. Just to be factory correct, hope you've noticed and corrected that 😉 Kudos on the Safrane, I'm off to check more videos on the channel. 😁

    Lovely cars - and very well built too. This will make a very capable and enjoyable car for touring and daily duties. A very good friend had two Series 1 Safranne 3.0 Executive autos. He sold the first one and regretted it so much he quickly bought another - which subsequently got pinched from outside his house - for reasons which we could only deduce was that it had a fully working auto box which was a weakness in the early cars - hed owned and has owned a wealth of different prestige and performance machinery and to this day still maintains that his Safrannes were one of his all time favourite cars. As much as I am a lover of Peugeots of this era - a Safranne is a far more together prospect than its contemporary French rival the 605. I look forward to the updates on this - and also being a fellow 406 3.0 coupe owner - the next stages of your own Coupes resuscitation. 👍

      Cheers, Byron.
      Yes, I've read stories about the issues of the earlier cars. I believe Renault fixed most problems by the end, but I think the damage was already done. That, and the fact that the Safrane depreciated like a stone.
      If the Safrane behaves, the 406 Coupe resuscitation (great word for it) should begin soon.

      Safrane was a very very underrated car and the V6 one was a complete gem!

    • @Petrolblog
      @Petrolblog  4 роки тому

      r25limousine Quite right. It was criticised for its heavy deprecation, unadventurous styling and the fact that it wasn’t German.
      Depreciation is positive for used car buyers, while the fact that it’s not German is part of the appeal.
      Personally, I love the styling.

If you ever consider selling please let my know I’d be happy to rehome this in Ireland!

    Had a mk1 2.2 safrane for a while last year, was used in the tv series lovejoy, great big old car, full of toys, especially loved the “lights still switched on” audio warnings, wasn’t the fastest but was the most comfortable car I owned, sold it on, kind of regretting doing so

    If you look at Auto Trader U.K.(22/05/2020). There is a 96(k) Safrane. Comparing with your car the back has electric windows and the back central air vent unit has a cigarette lighter plus two jacks for separate headphones. It seems like they were making economies for later cars despite being a grade from this one. It is also a £1000 but some kind of problem with display!

    • @Petrolblog

      That's a glorious thing - such a lot of car for a grand. It's a 1993 car, so one of the earliest examples.
      You're right about the pre-facelift cars being a tad more generous in terms of standard kit. I'd love to have the heated seats and voice synthesiser on mine, but I'm also grateful for what I've got.
      How long before the Safrane is extinct?

    all in all, a lot of car for 200 quid! Personally, I don't think that french cars should automatically have yellow fogs, as I have said before, sometimes it can clash with the aesthetics. either way though, it looks like you should do a French roadtrip in that, it seems perfect for it. I think I prefer this to the 406 coupe, as the 406 has an auto box when it really should be a manual in a car like that, but in something like this, its very appropriate. Good Luck!

    • @Petrolblog
      @Petrolblog  4 роки тому

      Will experiment with the yellow fogs once the paintwork has been sorted.
      A French road trip is a must. Will perch a couple of Tricolores on the edge of the front wings and do my best French diplomat impression.

    • @benhooper1956

      @@Petrolblog Yes, just yellow fogs should be alright. I just remember seeing a picture of a 480 in france with every front light yellow and just thinking it was overkill...

    My kinda car: Luxe trim package with a thrifty engine AND a hatchback that's neither overly hatchy nor overly shatchy. Best o' several worlds. From an aesthetic standpoint, this car really has aged gracefully. A lot of early '90s designs look pretty dated now. Car park glamour spoiler AND a proper cassette player. "Remarkably, most things work" - always a plus in my book, too. I rather like the practicality of the manual-crank rear windows. Why waste expensive electric window lifts on the back? Clearly, executives who drove the Safrane 2.0 were mindful of their fiduciary duty in all parts of their lives. Random note: The headlight lenses are surprisingly clear for a car that age. Perhaps due to limited exposure to UV rays in the UK? (Or an original owner who was smart enough to periodically clean them.)
    And I must say the (now) even dozen vehicles in the PetrolBlog Historic Motoring Heritage Fleet makes me feel positively abstemious with a mere 4 cars in my garage and driveway!

      The PetrolBlog Historic Motoring Heritage Fleet has a certain ring to it. I'm thinking of opening a PetrolBlog Museum of the Ordinary...
