As a medium hairy guy, I just wax it all off. Not to please anyone, not to take away insecurities, just because to me it feels much nicer - always hated the wooly feeling on my skin. But I don't mind hair on others, regardless what gender. It only matter that it feels good for you. On a more important note, I will try to make this skirt for my wife. Wish me luck 😅

I must say I'm enjoying the overhead filming, which allows us to see the steps from a "first person perspective". I totally agree, if I'm making something for myself and can take a few workable, effective shortcuts, why wouldn't I ? Life's too short to spend on lots of fiddly steps, as apposed to wearing the garments sooner than later. PS. "Hairy arms (and I my case leggs, too) just means good genetics has provided a way to keep you alive after others freeze." - My Mama 😉

Really nice project! The fabric is so beautiful and it is interestingly a Japanese (often multiseasonal) kimono motif called hana maru mon 花丸紋. It means "round crest of flowers" since the floral motif is placed on a circle as Japanese crests are always round.
Watching this just made me determined to finally make a pencil skirt. I don't know why I've been so terrified by them. I've made a closet full of low wasted maxi skirts and circle skirts. I guess the super streamlined tailored look of them just made them seem out of my league. Time to class up my closet! Oh ! And thank the goddess I found your channel! I really appreciate your encouragement about not having to be a fancy seamstress to create one's own clothes. Going in I knew I would be challenged to get the ball rolling as I am a perfectionist to the extreme (and somewhat frugal to boot, often fearful of "wasting" fabric). But with your very helpful pattern making videos I feel more confident about getting close enough to my particular shape and just diving in. I'm super proud of myself for completing the personalized front bodice pattern, but this pencil skirt is an even simpler way to get started and guarantee a decent fit. I scrolled through to see if it was mentioned, but you might look at local hardware stores that do knife sharpening! I had mine done at a family-owned place and they came out really sharp.
Note to self: never buy digital print fabric! I am way too messy to only get one shot at it. Also, I am on team “lazy sewist” and I think I have a zipper foot, maybe, somewhere... do I use it? Nope!

As has been said by the estimable Cathy Hay- finished is better than perfect. It’s something I tell myself a lot. Also something I was telling a bunch of teenagers today, as I took my first shot at teaching anyone anything. Why I thought a bunch of 13-15 year olds would be a great start, I don’t know. Nothing fancy, I just went into my daughter’s class and taught her class how to make masks. It was something. They were actually very enthusiastic, but you had to be super careful not to crush their fragile self esteem (especially as most of the class is either ADHD, Autistic, or both). But they did really well. Masks are actually not a particularly beginner friendly project, as I discovered- not for a bunch of teens who have barely so much as looked at a sewing machine before (and boy am I glad that I told them to mark their sewing lines on their fabric!). There’s quite a few steps to it, and sewing something inside out isn’t something that is always intuitive. But they did a pretty good job, and like I said- enthusiastic! To the point that many stayed in class through morning tea. I’ll be going back in Tuesday to help them finish the masks.
That's awesome! I think more young people should learn to sew, even if only a few days to discover if they like it, or to know from then on a bit more about how clothing is made.
My mom, like you, was a fashion design major and taught me to sew the same as you re: leaving in the needles. I very rarely have needles snap on me because according to my mom, having them perpendicular to the edge of your project makes the needle of the machine usually just scooch the pins out of the way. However, with the vintage machine I just got I may take a leaf from your book and start pulling pins as I go. :)

As a nurse I can say when I’m showing newbies how to do something I always say this isn’t the official way to do this but here’s how it actually gets done lol, I think life is like that in general 😂🤣😁
I've made 2 skirts now, and for both of them I didn't actually do any real... Research on how to finish the waistband onto the skirt. I kinda just stared at it for a while trying to picture how to hide all the seam allowances from the gathered bits into the waistband. One I did the finish by hand, the second one I did with stitch in the ditch because my dad bought me a special foot for it and I didn't want to take a long time to do it. I did watch a video on how to do the stitch in the stitch at least... But both times I've been worried about whether it's strong enough of a finish or if this is even the right way to do it. So, seeing you doing it the same way is such a relief that I somehow managed to do it the right ish way and that I didn't completely ruin the pieces! 😂 Though I definitely will be sucking it up and hand stitching the waistband finish in future, the stitch in the ditch looked so uneven, sadly. Worth the time to do by hand... You and your videos are a veritable font of helpful information!
Hello Gorgeous Lady. Instead of backtacking or back stitching at the beginning and end of a seam, I use a 0 stitch, lift the needle, adjust to the stitch length I wish to use. At the end of the seam, I make sure the needle is up, change to the 0 stitch, and the seam is completed and secured at both the beginning and the end. :)

I personally love the look of topstiching on things so I just don’t tend to finish things by hand because I like the machine stitch! (I do use hand finishings when relevant, but usually stick to the machine)

Regarding sewing over pins: when the pins are placed sideways, like you usually do, the feed dogs & presser foot just sort of scooch the pins along, and if the needle gets to close to a pin, it gets pushed out of the way instead of striking & breaking.
I work at a theatre. (Well, sort of-it’s a pandemic out there.) Our costumer - who has been sewing for decades- says that when she was taught home economics in school, they TAUGHT them to place the pins the way you do and then so over them. Soooooo, I’m not sure it’s that evil.

If you've got a local butcher they tend to offer knife and scissor sharpening. Also loving the new top down camera, it's great for seeing all the steps

I have made it a goal to learn to use all the feet! I just got a pack of fancy new sewing machine feet and I am loving the overlock foot right now (because I'm also working with wool, and it tends to fray so needed to overlock it before I can Make The Thing). And I can see the blind stitch foot will be super useful in the future. But yes, I generally leave on the regular all-purpose sewing foot and just go (its the quilter in me). Love the process!
First of all, lovely makeup my dear. The circular floral zentangle digital print is quite a challenge, well done! A tip for your scissors, fold a piece of tin foil several times over and use a sanding motion both on the flat and on the edges.
I just burst out laughing re, your comments on your bangs...no need to worry, we have all been there. My Mother once had my bangs cut so short that they stood straight up like in a flat top mens haircut! I wore a scarf for weeks in 5th grade because of that haircut! My sister had alot of hair on her arms and she felt very self conscious about it for years. Never mind what anyone thinks and shame on those who comment negatively. They should know better. Their bodies are not perfect, no one's is. The skirt came out beautifully and it looks great on you and that is all that matters!
I've always watched my mom sew. Like you, she did lots by eyeball. One thing...I don't think I saw her hand stitch a hem. I do...have to or it looks terrible by machine. My mom wanted me to learn how to see spatially. Couldn't get the hang of that til a few years ago.

As an older woman that had those arms. Age took away the hair and left crepey skin and age spots. Ha. Eventually, all of our arms look similar. 🤷🏻♀️

Check small hardware stores or anywhere that advertises knife sharpening. They will often also sharpen scissors.

If you ever teach mask making again, the Olson pattern is fairly easy ... but then, I've been sewing for -ahem- years.

My mom, like you, was a fashion design major and taught me to sew the same as you re: leaving in the needles. I very rarely have needles snap on me because according to my mom, having them perpendicular to the edge of your project makes the needle of the machine usually just scooch the pins out of the way. However, with the vintage machine I just got I may take a leaf from your book and start pulling pins as I go. :)
Love the fuss free approach to your sewing and the fit of your skirt is perfect, something you don't see with mass production.

As a nurse I can say when I’m showing newbies how to do something I always say this isn’t the official way to do this but here’s how it actually gets done lol, I think life is like that in general 😂🤣😁

I've made 2 skirts now, and for both of them I didn't actually do any real... Research on how to finish the waistband onto the skirt. I kinda just stared at it for a while trying to picture how to hide all the seam allowances from the gathered bits into the waistband. One I did the finish by hand, the second one I did with stitch in the ditch because my dad bought me a special foot for it and I didn't want to take a long time to do it. I did watch a video on how to do the stitch in the stitch at least... But both times I've been worried about whether it's strong enough of a finish or if this is even the right way to do it. So, seeing you doing it the same way is such a relief that I somehow managed to do it the right ish way and that I didn't completely ruin the pieces! 😂
Though I definitely will be sucking it up and hand stitching the waistband finish in future, the stitch in the ditch looked so uneven, sadly. Worth the time to do by hand...

Hello Gorgeous Lady. Instead of backtacking or back stitching at the beginning and end of a seam, I use a 0 stitch, lift the needle, adjust to the stitch length I wish to use. At the end of the seam, I make sure the needle is up, change to the 0 stitch, and the seam is completed and secured at both the beginning and the end. :)

I personally love the look of topstiching on things so I just don’t tend to finish things by hand because I like the machine stitch! (I do use hand finishings when relevant, but usually stick to the machine)
I like topstitching too, especially on cotton twill, it just seems right!

Regarding sewing over pins: when the pins are placed sideways, like you usually do, the feed dogs & presser foot just sort of scooch the pins along, and if the needle gets to close to a pin, it gets pushed out of the way instead of striking & breaking.
I work at a theatre. (Well, sort of-it’s a pandemic out there.) Our costumer - who has been sewing for decades- says that when she was taught home economics in school, they TAUGHT them to place the pins the way you do and then so over them. Soooooo, I’m not sure it’s that evil.

I have made it a goal to learn to use all the feet! I just got a pack of fancy new sewing machine feet and I am loving the overlock foot right now (because I'm also working with wool, and it tends to fray so needed to overlock it before I can Make The Thing). And I can see the blind stitch foot will be super useful in the future. But yes, I generally leave on the regular all-purpose sewing foot and just go (its the quilter in me). Love the process!

First of all, lovely makeup my dear. The circular floral zentangle digital print is quite a challenge, well done! A tip for your scissors, fold a piece of tin foil several times over and use a sanding motion both on the flat and on the edges.

I just burst out laughing re, your comments on your bangs...no need to worry, we have all been there. My Mother once had my bangs cut so short that they stood straight up like in a flat top mens haircut! I wore a scarf for weeks in 5th grade because of that haircut! My sister had alot of hair on her arms and she felt very self conscious about it for years. Never mind what anyone thinks and shame on those who comment negatively. They should know better. Their bodies are not perfect, no one's is. The skirt came out beautifully and it looks great on you and that is all that matters!

I've always watched my mom sew. Like you, she did lots by eyeball. One thing...I don't think I saw her hand stitch a hem. I do...have to or it looks terrible by machine. My mom wanted me to learn how to see spatially. Couldn't get the hang of that til a few years ago.
