Gotta love seeing all the Juicebox stickers on so many of the cars. Neil does such a top job documenting the irish scene, really hope you have the chance to catch up with him at some point Larry. Such a huge, nerdy enthusiasts in all the right ways about the whole culture over there

There's so many cool teams and lads in Ireland
It looks like this was a mostly Japanese show, but I'm glad they still managed to have both a mark 1 and 2 escort. Absolute cornerstone of the Irish rally scene, which along with the jdm is a big influence on Irish car culture in my opinion
For a little island, we do have an incredible car scene with some amazing cars hiding away. Pity the insurance / motor tax ruins the fun!
Bloody insurance has everything ruined, we used to have a small but thriving 4x4 offloading thing going on till crazy insurance costs for club run trails killed that, I've a competition standard suzuki vitara buggy that I can only take to a local disused gravel pit to mess around in, such a shame cos its a really capable rig that I've put a lot of time and effort into building.
@@fintan9705 are government let insurance companies rule and ruin are lives in Ireland, a few months ago all the motocross tracks got closed down because of insurance, we don't even have one ice rink, because of insurance companies
In 2004, Tsuchiya, Nomuken, and other D1 pros went to Ireland and were super happy to see Japanese car culture so prevalent there.
The Toyota Glanza is a sporty version of the Starlet, same 1.3-litre turbo as the Starlet GT Advance you looked at earlier. There used to be Glanzas everywhere in Ireland around 20 years ago, getting rare now, and lot more expensive
its the newer version of the EP82
The Irish government made it very hard to drive Japanese imports with taxes emissions and tests etc
Most of them got launched into ditches
In Ireland it's not always about the big flagship JDM models like the Supra, Skyline, Rx7, Evos etc... The smaller more rare JDM stuff gets big notice too. The Pulsar VZR, Mirage Mivec, Starlet Turbos.. Ireland imported ship loads of JDM in the 90s and 00s..There is lots off hided gems still stored away around the country waiting for restoration..
Big ones too expensive for us to run, anything above a 2.0 it costs us thousands a year to tax
@@NewHandle_ I know. Tax is a killer here in Ireland.. It was the high tax and insurance that killed the Jap imports near the end off the Celtic tiger.. Diesels were cheaper to run and became more popular.. Unfortunately... 😬

I'm in Dublin and the level of some cars is unreal! But most of our really cool cars are hidden away in garages and sheds because cars rot for fun here when out in the weather sadly.

Fun fact: That little "navigation" thing in the EP82 Starlet is actually a Compass! Because they made a couple 4WD models "meant" for recreational off roading :D It was a 250 buck option when new!
Ireland does JDM better than anyone else
It's crazy to think about how many Japanese treasures there are here! And 86s... I think Ireland is only second to Japan itself! And this is a country which didn't celebrate the car until the 1980s and the rally drivers here were often in cars around 1.0 to 1.8L! It's VERY rare to see an original Iriah reg on a car pre 1970s. SEVERAL comapnies even built cars here, but the dampness would have rotted so many into the dirt.

Looks like that Yellow Mirage was a complete evo driveline swap, not just a front end conversion... super cool.
The Mexico is a true commemorative production car, but the arches the lights the stripe kit were all options but you could get a plain version on steels.
But there was a lotus twin cam version to but with square headlights.
The roads of the Irish countryside are amazing. Its no wonder they have such awesome cars to enjoy them.
The N52 between Kells and Ardee is possibly the best road I've ever driven, there's a corner about every 200m and seriously good surface, and lots of elevation changes. I'm lucky to only be a few minutes off it. It's full of bikers and tuned cars during the summer months.
Dunno what country roads your driving but I want them 😂 my saxo doesn't like the bumps 😂
Lad, heading to College on a misty morning on back roads in my L701 '00 Daihatsu, is an absolute blast.

There are some fair special cars hidden through the Irish countryside in various garages and sheds.
Of the 15 or so special cars I'm aware of on my route, 9 are 86's, 1 is a 700hp mk iv Supra, 2 TME Evo's, a Carlos sainz GT-4 and buckets of is 200's(They are the new 86 here, fun, cheap and loads of them) and JZX's.
As good as the turnout was for the tour and the quality is top notch, the Bigger rally events are impressive for both the quality and sheer quantity of cars.. They fill the town and there is anti-lag like automatic gunfire for about 5 straight days.. (bring ear plugs to sleep) Donegal International being one of the bigger ones, which I was lucky enough to meet Ken during.
Need to check out more german car culture. Opel Calibra is one of them. Cant know every car ofc. ❤

If you want know more about Opel (Vauxhall in UK), look more in Europe car culture. That Opel Calibra is now rare car, rare in good condition. But, not only, more models from Opel are legends.

Opel is the german version of Vauxhaul and they build the Calibra during the early 90´s.
Top engine was a 2.5l V6 with around 160hp i believe. 😉

At 16:47 we had them in Australia from 1996/97 they're known as a Calibra, think it's a Vauxhall Cavalier in Ireland? Other places in Europe GM called them Opel Vectras
No in Ireland it's also called the Calibra, Ireland it was under Opel brand and in the UK was Vauxhall brand, the cavalier is a 4 door saloon whereas Calibra was only a 2 door coupe only

Because we drive on the same side, we imported little econobox family cars direct from Japan - used! - for years and years. When i was a kid It was commonplace to see Toyotas and Nissans and Mitsubishis on the road with square rear plates and different shaped fenders and odd names (to us) like Corona and Mirage and Pulsar.
Someone else can tell me: are grey imports still a thing or were they stopped?
There is still JDM importing happening, just not nearly on the same scale like it was back in the late 90's and into the early 2000's. Back then, literally every second car was a JDM import, or it certainly seemed like that at the time anyway 😉
And even though the cars were a lot fresher and newer, I think they were a lot cheaper back then as well.
You can thank the government and the the Society of the Irish Motor Industry, SIMI, for the death of the importation of cool JDM cars to Ireland, they lobbied the government to change the regulations around importation and put massive VRT on imports, falsely claiming that Japanese imports were all poor quality used cars and unsafe insurance write-offs, imported by unscrupulous car dealers and also claiming that importation was hurting the Irish main dealer trade to the point where it was making their businesses unviable, blah blah blah.
No doubt a few brown envelopes changed hands in the process don't ya know.
Difficulty getting insurance at a reasonable price didn't help the Irish car scene either.

I think we're lucky in Ireland in that Japan also drives on the wrong side of the road and as such we can import from Japan easily enough.
