Totally understandable. I hate Austria as well, last time I got fined while driving 120 in 50 kmh zone. Totally unfriendly, worst experience ever, not recommended.
We skipped Austria because we were carrying a lot of souvenirs we bought in Turkey and I'm 100% sure we were over the 3.5T limit 😂 Slovenia was amazing, though! - drive safely ☺
I think during the summer season the police crack down on wild camping. During the winter months, when all the camp sites are all closed the police aren't so strict. Officially wild camping in Croatia is illegal year round. The police can't tell you to find a campsite out of season because they are all closed. Often the camp sites are just left open, outside the holiday season.
That makes perfect sense, the policeman who issued the fine was very nice but said they are cracking down on sleeping in vehicles this year. We wouldn't have experienced amazing campsites if it wasn't for the fine, so all is good and we had a good experience overall!
