These old school Catch wrestling techniques haven't age a bit. Guys are actually pulling them off these days more than ever. At least anytime in recent history.
Leglocks are no joke! Most schools will not even let you use them until you get to a certain level because of the injuries they can cause! Erik Paulson is the shit when it comes to any submission!
Erik Paulson's Killer Omlette Recipe: You crack six eggs into a bowl, whisk them with a four-tined fork, add three pinches of salt, three pinches of pepper, 1/4 cup of chopped chives, 1/4 cup of red peppers and a half cup of grated mozzerella cheese. Sprinkle with onion salt. And then you put the toes in the butt.
kinda of an old post but, the reason is most dont use them is because you usually have to be a professional fighter to use moves below the waist..far as i know.
ha ha, this shit starts out with a bjj/grace jujitsu eating move. guards are fuckin useless hanks to that alone. bad enough 'guard' isn't where you want to be for any reason. gotta love that sakuraba famous-gracie jujitsu killing catch wrestling. i gotta learn this shit. any good schools in montgomery county maryland?
You might start out learning what you're talking about, instead, starting with the fact that not all guards are closed, and technique number one is useless against open guards. And considering the success multiple people have had fighting from the guard, baseless claims like "bad enough 'guard' isn't where you want to be for any reason" just comes off as bloviating nonsense.
You might want to simply not talk the next time you feel the need to. 1 the closed (see that word) guard is what the gracies says is the safest spot for someone on the bottom. You can't control anyone with an open guard. 2 easy to have success with the guard when you don't have to worry about slams or strikes. How many people do you see using the guard in mma today vs when it first started in the usa?! people hardly use the guard today compared to 15-20 years ago when people would intentionally go for the guard instead of end up there by course of events. ask anyone that know about fighting and they will tell you: especially in a street fight much less, being on your back on the ground is the last place you want to be. hell even the gracies themselves (and others) say: if you're on your back, you did something wrong. the point is to be on top, not on bottom. ps: adhoms only make you look more stupid
You would do well to take your own advice. First, it makes no difference what the Gracies say. Second, they don't say that anyway. In fact, they were well known for saying “an armbar is only achieved with your guard open” when asked about the merits of the closed guard. Third, you most certainly can control people from the open guard. All you are doing is showing your complete and utter ignorance of both BJJ and ground fighting in general by making such ridiculous statements. From the butterfly guard to the Del la Riva, and beyond, there are any number of open control guards. You simply have no idea what you're talking about. At all. The rest of your argument is simply erroneous platitudes and factually baseless claims. Just because you type words into the internets, doesn't magically make them true. And FTR, I am not even a BJJ fighter. I studied traditional Japanese JJ and catch wrestling.
Great video. Have saved this for reference. If nothing else at least #1 looks doable almost immediately! Shortcuts to techniques: 1) 0:15 2) 0:54 3) 2:26 4) 3:40 5) 4:35 6) 6:09 7) 7:25 8) 8:18
Leg locks are beautiful. I love them. Alot of fighters aren’t using them like they did back in the day. Paulson, Both Shamrocks, Barnett a bunch of Legends used leg locks and that was the Coffin ⚰️ nail back then.
i know about the history. Omar ( the demonstrater in the video) trained with funaki ( one of the creators of pancrase). funaki came up with alot of leglock techniques that he taught to his students. pancrase has its roots in catch wrestling ,not actual greek pancration (which has been dead for several thousand years).
I use to practice these a lot and use them in sparring. I have since discarded most because I was overly concerned about giving up position if the tech failed. However I'm going to reintroduce them because if practised with proficiency I think they can be extremely effective and successful.

Its true man, in my bjj classes we rarely worked them because most people don't even realize they're in trouble before its too late.
Poor guy on the bottom sheesh
Never seen these before. Awesome thanks!!

Great move, but my legs would cramp at 0:37 I do miss the J.J and Judo.
Paulson loves to pretend he love's BJJ, but he's a catch guy all the way, that's why Josh Barnett trains with him
you really can enjoy both tho.
@bretlynn De la Riva guard in BJJ, I think.
