My favorite is how when I was a BJJ blue (with five prior years of catch) they would yell at me NO LEG ATTACKS! yet now every BJJ school "rediscovered" leg attacks. Absolutely hilarious.

I don't think they rediscovered them. I don't allow my students to use them until blue belt. For several reasons. But I've been doing leg locks in Jiu-Jitsu since 1999.

When Erik does the moves so smoothly you can clearly see that Catch wrestling is the father of Pro wrestling. The locks can be done for real or just for show. It's up to the wrestler. Erik is a legend !

These subs def work but if some reason you can't finish, your still in great position and exposes your opponents back or sets up a different sub. Since you don't have to drop back to the ground to finish, no risk of your opponent defending and getting top position. Can also use if just need to tie someone up till cops show up.

I attended a few seminars with Eric several years ago and I can assure you that all of his locks/submissions are painful. They however have a pro wrestling look. He is a legit Rigan Machado black belt as well.

@P Kamino Fair point about the Gene LeBell sketches but catch wrestling was still legit wrestling, only with neck cranks, leglocks, and armbars. Looking past the obvious Sakuraba and Barnett, Neil Melanson is also a known and respected catch wrestler.

I have so much respect and admiration for catch wrestling. I don’t know why it never caught on more (see what I did there?). It’s a real shame it doesn’t have the same kind of popularity as Brazilian jujitsu. Mostly marketing I guess. I honestly think that, all things being equal, a good catch wrestler beats a good jiujitsu player on any given day.
Besides, catch wrestling as much more practical for actual combat. Even Chris Hauter talks about how you should be on top and be aware of the seductive nature of playing guard.
I’m glad you’re still around, Erik, and I’m thankful that you are willing to share your knowledge with us.
