Thanks 👍I'd also say I had some luck on my side, I did take a chance and might not have been able to repair it for instance if the main IC was cooked. But it did turn out good in the end 🙂
Thanks 👍yes I don't actually use it now as I prefer the infiray one I now have. It has a higher resolution and frame rate and also I can record to SD where this one doesn't record.
Thanks! I'm not sure if I did reply back to FLIR or not. I had a similar experience with a solar inverter and the company wouldn't give me the password for it to adjust a setting after I repaired it, I didn't give up and had to reverse engineer their software, and then write my own password generator. I then emailed them back the passwords for both of my inverters 😂😂Both the repair and the password shenanigans are on my channel 🙂
Well done, sir! I have a goodly collection of older test equipment just to have schematics and proper service manuals. I have enjoyed some success repairing stupid-expensive things like AMX touch panels having broken screens with good displays from old laptops that can be had for $10. Also like to take advantage of company buy-outs…for example, Flir bought Extech, rebranded everything Flir, changed out Extech orange plastics for blue, but little internal changes. Extech devices often sell for much less than Flir. Fixed a Flir DVM similar to yours using parts from a dead, cheap, non-thermal Extech DVM with a good screen. $15 fix for a $600 meter. The DVM was complete toast; looked light it would if someone tried to measure 240 volts using the mA inputs :-)

FLIR will be pissed. Great fix - now everyone knows how to fix that model if the screen goes kaput. You tricked the cpu like the news van in the movie "Speed" did by making a tape of the camera on the bus to loop over and over, tricking the bomber into thinking he still had all his hostages! Well done :)
Nice catch on the screen. When I saw the screen you ordered, I suspected that with the wider metal across the top (or is that the bottom) that it wouldn't fit right or look right. But it looks great! Nice job!
Thanks Blondie 👍 I checked the sizes first to make sure it fit, it was pretty much the same screen apart from the one pin that the FLIR processor was expecting to output, luckily my bodge seemed to take care of that. I'm going to do a review of another FLIR camera soon as a company kindly sent me one, and I'm really impressed so far. It seems to make the FLIR look like trash!
I once repaired a AC fan (for a boiler) where among the defects a Pic chip was defective. I asked technical support of the supplier and even got a new binary file to flash a new Pic chip. That was really amazing, good support companies do exists, but they are in minority.
Nice, I would think that is very far and few between! We need more companies with such a helpful approach. You're never too old buddy, I'm fairly long in the tooth too, but usually everything I look at to repair I learn something new. Every day is a school day so they say...
@kalpat5753. Same here. I know the basic principles of what a resistor does, what a capacitor does and what a diode does. But how just by arranging all those things in different ways you can make an infinity of different "stuff" happen is just like witchcraft to me. But I still enjoy watching these kind of videos and thinking "Iwish I could do that". But, also being too long in the tooth to go down that particular rabbit hole, I too get a wee bit jealous!

Awesome work-around! So since the display grounds pin 2, I'm assuming that in addition to jumping that line to the backlight PWM, you also lifted the pin from the display connector? This was an interesting fix -- I own one of these meters and this will be a valuable resource if it should fail in a similar manner down the road.
I second @bootsowen 's comment on you being very brave on that meter! The datasheet suggests floating the pin, but as it was stipulated on the original LCD this probably cause more trouble. Do you know what is meant by TE1 = TE? Is there a second pin on the LCD marked TE1? They must limit warranty repair units to the 1 year minimum otherwise they'd be perpetually replacing them. I managed to find a suitable clutch for a 40year old 2Stroke hedge trimmer from Ali Express. That shop comes in handy!
Thanks Ian. I'm no sure about the TE1 as I couldn't see a TE1 pin on the pinout. It can be left floating if it's not used, but in this case it was being used to tell the processor that it had finished drawing that frame or something, but with my bodge it looks perfect anyway... Perhaps it might not update the image as quick or something? but it looks good to me! I was using it earlier on a board to see if I could see a heat spot... Yes AliExpress does come in handy!
@@BuyitFixit TE is "Tearing Effect". It is the frame flyback pin if you are native english speaking. I had a similar experience with random aliexpress displays having different pinouts. However in my case I was able to change a resistor position on the flex PCB to get access to TE
Mick, I cant imagine what you could do if you had a schematic to work from. I’ll bet you would be able to add features or improvements to anything you got your hands on.

Flir used a 320 x 240 screen. The Kd 0230 2 is a part number that was used by the display mfg. Looks like you were lucky to find another simmilar part on the web but the interface was different. Note the web page never had the 23c01 number. Flir may not know the kd 032 number i think there may be another flir number on the back of the lcd.
Great job with that bodge! Also, can't believe they wanted to see a receipt to make sure your barely 5 year old product was within the 10 year warranty period as well...
Thanks 👍Yes, I think there warranty only lies with the original purchaser and is not transferable. It looked like a customer return or something as there wasn't even any light scratches or signs of use on it and all of the test leads were still sealed.
Fantastic. I was rooting for ya! I had the same exact situation with a nice MAC meter. I also bought off of eBay it had a cracked LCD and the same issue with the company. MAC wanted me to send it in and pay for repair. I did not have any luck with that one and still cannot find a LCD for it. So glad you got this much nicer FLIR going. Looks very handy!
Ok. Now this is absolutely brilliant😎👍 I would have done an analysis of that pin with the original screen and a logic analyser. The screen is defective though and the logic probably wouldn't have worked either😁 So this is absolutely genius, kind sir! Thanks for sharing!!
I'm surprised you didn't check the two fuses first thing. It wasn't that and it would be a worst design ever if a blown fuse for the input of a DMM were to cause a blank screen but, you know... When you said there was a couple of pins different on the new screen, I kinda hoped you'd have to break the trace and reroute them or something but what you did was even more impressive.
Thanks Diane 👍after making the video I got an email from a company who makes thermal cameras, they sent me one of their usb models that fits an android phone. I much prefer it over the FLIR it has much better resolution and frame rate.
Thanks 👍it's been a while since I looked at this, the ribbon is bonded to the display and has a chip bonded to it if I remember. I checked the capacitors on the display ribbon, but came to the conclusion that the IC on the display had failed.
Nice 🙂👍I've done some pretty impressive work, including software and hardware! I had a similar experience like this one with a solar inverter I repaired, then the company wouldn't help so I had to reverse engineer their software, and write my own password generator to get a password to change some settings! The videos are "aurora solar inverter" and "no password, no problem" hopefully you'll like those too 🙂
@@BuyitFixit Just thinking about it, the freq of the PWM signal is possibly synced with the LCD ‘refresh’ as to not cause any aliasing with the backlight?? That TE signal may well be exactly the same? Anyway it works and that’s extremely satisfying and a nice bit of test equip at a snip!
@@petesapwell Yes true I didn't think of the backlight PWM being synchronized with the refresh. Although the signal is from the LCD to tell the processor that it has finished processing the frame. Anyway it seems to work 😂😂😂
I’m glad you found this out about FLIR. I was about to purchase a new meter similar to the featured in your video. Because FLIR does not support “Right to Repair” they are definitely going on the Do Not Buy list. BOOOO FLIR. For spite, let’s completely reverse engineer the meter and post schematics and BOM so people can fix their own tech. Great video
Thanks👍I've had a similar experience a couple of times now. One was with a Solar inverter I repaired, and then needed to adjust a setting. I emailed the company that took over manufacturing them and they said "it's an old model, buy a new one" pretty much. I ended up having to reverse engineer the software and I wrote my own service password generator which is available on the video to download. I also show all of the emails that went back and forward the same as on this video. You might like that one too. It's called "no password, no problem" 🙂
Better late than never 👍the original screen just lit up all white. It didn't display anything at all. I think the internal LCD driver chip on it had failed.
I have a Flir One Pro and it needs its 3rd battery. I believe the oem charging circuit allows an overcharge, either to fast or too high a voltage. I think if this one fails I am going to modify it to use an external battery, probably 3 AAA energizer ultimate batteries. The internal battery never did run it for long on a charge. Perhaps I will make it attach with a magsafe ring...
As a retired engineer , I know exacltly the feeling you got when the screen came on. Nothing like it in the world. Congrats.

Thanks so much for your kind comment! A lot is just experience and trying to figure things out logically. Your skills will improve the more you practice 🙂 If you get stuck with anything I'll try me best to help.
Tremendous approach to a Spectacular outcome! _not just regarding emails_ As to the Meter, *Far Out,* Great Job!
Loved that Reminder you stated. *WITHOUT TRUTH,* corporations, and Governments are but a *SCAM.*

Every company that throws those words "propriety" at their customers must be reminded, (if really is, [was] their Mission) they're in business to bring goods in *Favor of the people's pursuit to Happiness,* not just their pockets. *Cheers!*
Thanks 👍yep agree with all of that 🙂
You are talented, and you have endurance. That pays off.
Thanks 👍
Flir went and bought up half the dmm market haha. That was the most perfect staircase wave I've ever seen in real time.
I've actually been sent another thermal camera by a company to keep, which I'm going to compare with the FLIR. I'm going to do a comparison between them.
Genius inspiration to use the PWM signal for a refresh line....
Yes, I thought I'd give it a go. I think the MCU was in a loop waiting for the signal and then the watchdog timer kicked in resetting it.
I love a good bodge job, well done. I enjoy a good bodge in the workshop I work at with out of production stuff.
Thanks 👍yes I've had to get creative a few times. In fact the video out later today is quite similar.
Yah! Well done. Perseverance paid off!
It gives me hope that I can find the fault in one of my MMeters that won't power on now. Time to take another look see after watching you and your troubleshooting skills, I will have another go at examining the board(s).
Thanks 👍Best of luck!
Beautiful! Very nice little piece of kit. Crazy that that one little module is $200 on its own. Congrats on the addition to the lab!
Thanks!
I'm tempted to say you have the luck of the proverbial Irish, but that's not luck - that's experience and enough knowledge to take a chance. Phenomenal result - well done!
Thanks 👍I'd also say I had some luck on my side, I did take a chance and might not have been able to repair it for instance if the main IC was cooked. But it did turn out good in the end 🙂
Magic! I felt good for you when you fixed it. That’s an expensive piece of kit!
Thanks 👍yes I don't actually use it now as I prefer the infiray one I now have. It has a higher resolution and frame rate and also I can record to SD where this one doesn't record.
might be an idea to send FLIR a link to your video. showing them that they are actually not required to fix their products. great work.
Thanks Mark, and thanks for the info 👍🙂
I as well applaud you adn was very happy to see the right-to-repair verbiage. Kudo's to you for that. I know that I will not keep anything that I can't/won't be allowed to fix myself. Nice save on this one. 👍
Cheers mate 👍
Fantastic work! Thinking out of the box again. Well done. I’m off to watch the solar repair now 👍
Cheers mate 👍
Nice result. Well done.
Thanks 👍
You have next level skills fella, I love watching your fixes
Thanks mate 👍🙂
What an awesome fix! What looks to be a great tool!! Eat that, FLIR!
Thanks 👍
Absolutely incredible, well done. Amazing piece of logic to resolve the issue. I just love your videos.
Cheers mate 👍I've done a few good ones like this 🙂
You never surprise me with your Brilliance Your talent is just amazing. I am so impressed and wish I knew what you have forgotten. Thank you for such quality videos.
Thanks Fred. Really appreciate that 👍
I must say you are an absolute genius I have never seen anyone as good around this kind of stuff you deserve a lot more subscribers
Thanks 😊👍
Very impressive diagnosis well done and a very useful bit of kit. Shame on FLIR though!
Thank you John!
Thank you great information FLIR is now added to the list of garbage not welcome in my shop.
You're welcome. I've been sent an infiray thermal and I'll be doing a comparison video soon.
@@BuyitFixit Good we need options,These guys have to learn we will not tolerate this behaviour. I'm done with Apple and John Deere as well and many others for the same reason.
You deserve way more subscribers. Very nice fix.
Thanks Robin! I'm sure I'll get there eventually...
Thanks 👍. Yes I was so pleased I managed to get that one working!
Great find and fix. That is a nice tool to have doing the repairs you do. Great video once again!
Thanks Jeffrey! :)
I had an experience similar to this with a solar inverter I repaired where they wouldn't give me a password! (So I reverse engineered their software) The video is on here too called "no password, no problem" if you haven't seen that one 🙂👍
doncha just hate it when the company says they can't or won't send you a simple thing such as a data sheet? I try not to buy anything I can't get a diagram for. . . .
Now if i could just get the diagrams for my Jeep (lol)
Most of the time watching your vids I haven't got a clue about the technology or the phraseology but find your fixes good to watch. I am too long in the tooth for learning new skills so a little bit jealous.
A really proud moment for you, I have never heard such frustration and elation from you on any other videos. Really well done on the fix and overcoming the different type screen pin out issue, some nice out of the box thinking there, enjoy the camera now 😊👍
Thanks, yes I don't know why this video didn't do better than it did. It only did as well as it has because I submitted it to a site called hackaday which made it get a lot more views. I've been doing UA-cam more seriously over the last 18 month and I still don't understand why some videos do well and others don't. It just seems down to pot luck 🤷♂️
@@BuyitFixit I think is the type of content, the repairs on tools will do well as there are people who want to have a go, I believe it's that type that draws people in as more and more content creators are doing the same so it's not a small audience anymore. People want to fix things to save money right now, those videos will do well I believe 👍@BuyitFixit
@thetraindriver01 Thanks mate 👍
Thanks 👍yes you are correct. I cut the track near the display connector so the pin wasn't grounded 🙂
if it fails then we can check is it 10y warranty that they claimed on mail.
Thanks for that! On the display I got from Aliexpress pin 2 is just linked along with pin 1 direct to ground. No resistors or anything to change.
Excellent modification to make it work.
Thanks 👍
Mick, I cant imagine what you could do if you had a schematic to work from. I’ll bet you would be able to add features or improvements to anything you got your hands on.
@@bills6946 Cheers Bill 👍sometimes it's more software than schematics. Like the ultrasound scanner video where I find some hidden features which I managed to unlock 🙂
@@BuyitFixit Exactly my point, Mick.
Good for you! Nice fix for short money... and excellent results! Thank you for sharing that!
Thanks 👍🙂
Mate, as soon as I saw the voltage come up on that screen, I raised my hand and said "Heeey, get on that mate!" like I'm watching footie!!! :D Nicely done mate!
Thank you 🙂👍
Watching this video thinking:
this guy doesn't know what he's doing...
this isn't going to work...

😂😂😂😂Thanks 👍 Did you see the solar inverter repair and then the software hacking then ensued, or the medical ultrasound scanner video I did?
Bravo!! Creative thinking and the satisfying result. Wow! Im impressed :)
Thanks Lukasz!
Back from vacation and two videos waiting, I was not disappointed, a really interesting fix and with that fixed it was a real bargain
Hope you had a great vacation! Yes glad I got that fixed. No doubt it will feature in future videos!
@@BuyitFixit I really did, had a little get away with the missus, I'll be looking forward to seeing it in use
That video had it all - suspense, jeopardy, disappointment and a great resolution! Thank goodness for AliExpress.
Thanks Julian! Yes it was definitely a bit of a rollercoaster ride that one!
Great stuff, tenacious repair sir, excellent solution for that pin
Thanks Retsof 👍
Well done Mick really impressed lovely result pleased for you Mick😊
Thanks 👍. Nice kit but I've yet to use it on a repair video.
Amazing fix!!!
Thanks Antonio 👍
Great job with that bodge! Also, can't believe they wanted to see a receipt to make sure your barely 5 year old product was within the 10 year warranty period as well...
Thanks 👍Yes, I think there warranty only lies with the original purchaser and is not transferable. It looked like a customer return or something as there wasn't even any light scratches or signs of use on it and all of the test leads were still sealed.
Next time tell them it was a Christmas present and Santa did not include it in the gift; But, hold on, you'll go check the chimney😜
@hypocrisyrules 😂😂😂
That was amazing well done
Thank you very much!
very clever work, congratulations.
Thank you! Cheers!👍
Thanks Thrifty Tool Shed! Pity about your MAC meter :(
Ok. Now this is absolutely brilliant😎👍 I would have done an analysis of that pin with the original screen and a logic analyser. The screen is defective though and the logic probably wouldn't have worked either😁 So this is absolutely genius, kind sir! Thanks for sharing!!
Thanks for your kind words. Much appreciated 👍Check out the RGB laser video I did if you haven't already, I'm sure you'll like that one too 🙂
@@BuyitFixit I will do that👍 Thanks for the tip! Learning a lot from you💪
Nice repair and some good research as well. Very impressed !
Thanks FastMover 👍
That is a cool fix and solution
Thanks 👍
Quite the leap of faith there to send the pwm signal back to the cpu.
Thanks Bob👍, it was only low voltage and the microcontroller was just waiting for that pin to toggle (probably an interrupt) so it worked out well 🙂
Very impressive repair, just subscribed to learn more. Well done.
Thanks Patrick. I've got a switch mode power supply repair for the next one, which is fairly educational!
Thanks 👍
You're spectacular! Well done, sir!
Thanks Roberta 👍
You are one talented guy!
Thanks 👍
Brilliant! Nice work around!

Great case for a Fluke instrument. Nuff said!

Such a cool fix, and you ended up with a really useful bit of kit. Well done!
Thanks 👍
Flippin Ek.
Another great bodge Canny Lad.
Cheers 👍
Cool fix! Such a meter is on my wishlist. You have saved a lot of money.
Thanks Diane 👍after making the video I got an email from a company who makes thermal cameras, they sent me one of their usb models that fits an android phone. I much prefer it over the FLIR it has much better resolution and frame rate.
@@BuyitFixit wow! That might be a reason for me to become a UA-camr myself 😆.
Just got a problem. I hate camera’s.
Same here.. that's why you never see me on camera.. well occasionally the back of me like when I was fitting solar panels on the workshop roof 😂😂😂
Watched it twice! Awesome
Is it possible to do a continuity check on ribbon wires of display (no. 1 and 2)?
Thanks 👍it's been a while since I looked at this, the ribbon is bonded to the display and has a chip bonded to it if I remember. I checked the capacitors on the display ribbon, but came to the conclusion that the IC on the display had failed.
Yep I’m hooked
Nice 🙂👍I've done some pretty impressive work, including software and hardware! I had a similar experience like this one with a solar inverter I repaired, then the company wouldn't help so I had to reverse engineer their software, and write my own password generator to get a password to change some settings! The videos are "aurora solar inverter" and "no password, no problem" hopefully you'll like those too 🙂
@@BuyitFixit I’ll be slowly but surely going through your videos. It is very impressive. Thank you.
Excellent bodge!! I’m impressed :)
Thanks! 👍
Anyway it seems to work 😂😂😂
In cases like this, I search for the CPU datasheet and try to find UART TX pin to get some debug log to find out what's wrong with the device
I've done similar a few times too, like on the AVerMedia capture device video and on the recent VTech baby video monitor repair.
A yr. late , But I wonder if you tried the original screen with the bog wire - stopping the cycling ?
Thanks agian
Better late than never 👍the original screen just lit up all white. It didn't display anything at all. I think the internal LCD driver chip on it had failed.
Did you cut a trace so pin 2 no longer went to ground? (Assuming pin 1 and 2 were ground).
Yes, indeed I did 🙂👍
I have a Flir One Pro and it needs its 3rd battery.
Sounds a decent plan 👍
Really good video, excellent fix. I salute you for your courage and determination.🖖😎👍
Thanks 👍
