  • "Although some early versions of Iko Iko appeared out of Drums and Space, by 1984 it was primarily a set opener, both the first and second sets. Whenever those opening notes of Iko Iko opened a first or second set, it felt like party time was starting, and a fun set was coming up." - David Lemieux

      So lucky to have been a part of this. Truly a unique thing that transports me back with ease- getting up on the day of the show with anticipation and excitement. The community of true original deadheads was/is incomparable to any other musical experience. A true phenomenon, back then I didn’t think it was anything more than really digging the scene and once Jerry would play and all cares just drifted away and the dancing began.
      I feel really bad for people that didn’t get it.

      I followed them up the East Coast of the US in the 80's as a teen, paying my way by selling Tye Dyes and other things. I will never forget it. It's carved into my bones. One of the best experiences of my life. It ended in Saratoga NY. Which wasn't fun. but it had nothing to do with the band and all to do with Authorities.

    Something about seeing older Jerry play wolf just seems mythical. It’s like “I know that guitar but that doesn’t look like it’s master. I also know that master but that doesn’t look like his guitar.”
    So used to seeing grey Jerry with Tiger. Love Wolf! Love Jerry!!

      For me, Brent and Mickey made this particular era of the Dead special. Of course, it took all their various strengths to make the special music they made, but during this era, Brent brought those giant build-ups and washes on that Hammond (as well as the fat plunky-funk seen here throughout), and, while Mick could be overbearing at times, he got behind those buildups and used those toms and cymbals to make us feel it even more (and his passion was always so evident). Sure, Jerry was the man, and Bob always provided the choppy, dance-able rhythm, and Phil brought his bass style that, in fact, made the band what they were, but, during the late 80s--particularly 89 and early 90--it was Brent and Mickey whose musical voices really helped to push them up to that late-era peak. And what a peak it was!!!!

    You can see how much fun the boys are having, its written on their faces. This is them at their late era best. So great to see the smiles, you can hear it in the playing🙂.

    • @davidr1676
      @davidr1676 3 роки тому +1

      For me late era best starts mid to late 87 and ran through summer 90. Peak being Summer 89 to Spring 90 but that whole period was one high ridgeline of peaks and no valleys, just mountain tops during tours and ridges/crests between shows.

    • @LadyFairChildVideo

      alot of fun, except when bob misses the chorus of "hey now" and jerry looks over like "wtf?" you can tell by bob's body language (pointing the back of his head towards Jerry), that he was equally upset at Jerry grimacing, and even at one point looking at the camera like "wtf camera dude, you caught all this, get the effin camera off me" yes, even peace loving hippie cool bands like the dead had struggles internally sometimes they were probably over it almost immediately, the entire "tension" lasted like all of 10 seconds llol

    The second to last West coast show before they headed back East for the third time that year. I saw them on all three legs in the east. Greensboro, Cincinnati, Louisville..... Then that summer, Foxboro, Buffalo .... And then that fall I got to see the infamous Warlocks shows in Hampton as well as the Charlotte coliseum shows.I was going to school in southwestern Virginia which put me right smack dab in the heart of a lot of their East coast touring, and I lived in upstate New York which put me back home for the summer when they played foxborough andn Buffalo

      @@markbeebe125 I am a native of Roanoke; I was at Hampden-Sydney College at the time from 87-91. I made it to most of the shows in mid-Atlantic, though I often hit one or two of three or whatever. Between 89-91, we hit Greensboro a couple of times, Raleigh, DC (several times, including the Ripple night at the Cap Center), Louisville, Charlotte (I think), and, of course, Hampton for the Warlocks (Night One only--though I hate I missed the dropping of Dark Star, my girlfriend at the time and I were up front, on the rail, for Night One and Help-Slip-Franklin's which was ecstatic. I think of these time often, both nostalgically and gratefully. In 88 and 89, I managed to experience the last days of a true Shakedown Street out in the lot and enjoyed a number of nights sleeping in the lot in the car. I continued to see them, with somewhat less frequency, until Spring of 95 at Charlotte, where I honestly left knowing the magic was if not over, diminishing very quickly. That summer I intentionally stayed away and, coincidentally, caught my first Phish show at Walnut Creek in Raleigh--one era was closing and another was just opening up!!!!

    At 1:11 Jerry gives Bob a look to get on up to the mic. Or at least it seems that way.

    Jerry looks crackling though I was never a fan of the midi stuff... I always preferred the “low” tech Grateful Dead.

    Anyone know where I can get a horn pedal like Jerry has

    • @morganthomas5934
      @morganthomas5934 3 роки тому

      It’s a midi patch. They experimented with them in the late 80s. Modern equivalent would be to buy a MIDI pickup or a Roland guitar. Tho I’m sure there’s pedals like the EHX (maybe) POG which would get you somewhere similar
