    I had a 2022 718 Spyder with a manual transmission, 440HP tune, full
exhaust, over axle pipes, and BMC filters. I was very happy with the car and didn’t think I needed a Spyder RS …..until a friend let me drive his. Holy crap, it’s a totally different experience and not a lot of people mention anything but the engine, but there must’ve been a decent amount of changes to suspension because the car actually rides even better and still feels sharper in handing. We have a group of about 6 guys that have all gone from 718 Spyders to RS’s and everyone of us initially said it wasn’t worth the money and losing the manual transmission for, yet everyone of us loves our RS’s. It’s the type of car that has to be experienced to be fully appreciated

Had a manual 718 spyder. Absolutely loved it. Perfect sports car. The RS is basically a race car version of that car. Engine and tranny are absolute beasts, and the intake note is complete motorsports bliss. But you gotta pay to play. Do I miss my MT spyder, though? I do not. It’s a lot of extra money, but if you have it, the RS is absolutely sublime. But if you have either car, consider yourself lucky.

Nice driving review! I'm biased because we have the 718 Spyder, 6spd. I wouldn't goto the RS at this point, mostly because it's a lot more expensive, and because I don't like the soft top design and I wanted a manual.
To me the 718 Spyder is the steerable sports car, the RS is the track version. Two different things for different purposes.
I will drive the RS if I get a chance to compare the driving experience too!

They're the same recipe, the only difference is the level of intensity. Spyder RS intake note is magic, but sacrificing the option of a manual is a shame, and dynamically I don't think there's a big step up (makes sense, 95% same suspension components). Overall, I think the base Spyder is a better all-round package, especially with a couple mods and a proper alignment. The roof mechanism is a lot more convenient, meaning it can go touring with less friction, and do daily duty at a push. The RS is somewhat relegated to weekend and track, and suffers in countries that have frequent wet weather, whereas the base is a solid all rounder that can perform anywhere. Base is great in a 1-2 car garage, RS is a dream addition to any 3 car garage.

Having gone from an S2000 to a Cayman S, then a detour to a 997 GT3RS, then GT4, then GT4RS, to currently an RS Spyder, I appreciate the various comments posted, including asking for more comparative analysis. The 2023 Spyder sounded great and has the benefit for many of the manual. The RS Spyder is insanely fast (0-60mph in 2.8 on one test) and needs the PDK which is from the GT3RS and uttterly intuitive and brilliant. This car is now banned in Australia where I live and there was just one shipment which arrived, while it seems they will be available elsewhere for at least all of 2025. You pay a lot more for the RS. By the way you weren't reviewing the Weissach version with unnecessary exhaust tips, extra carbon fibre and magnesium wheels. And its not too loud!

I have a similar very well speced 2022 Porsche 718 Spyder with a Softronic tune. I only want manual transmission cars. I get how great the RS is, but for me, I'm very happy with mine. I also have an Evora GT that's modified and tuned for that very raw, analog and challenging driving experience.

I bought a regular Spyder last year, these were my reasons, yes the RS sounds better and has more appeal, however with roof up you can only drive 200 km/h which since I am based in Germany is too slow for our Autobahn, also with more volatile weather wouldn’t wanna deal with roof mechanism of the RS, then MT only in regular Spyder, PDK for race track but the Spyder is made for B roads, then there is apart from the price difference also maintenance, Porsche prices the regular Spyder the same like an entry level Boxster, the RS because of the engine like a GT3, same for insurance here, the RS is already in the exotic car bracket with much higher insurance bills to pay. To me the regular Spyder is an absolute bargain!

I traded my manual 718 GT4 in for my GT4RS so while not Spyders I can add some thoughts to this. The PDK is absolutely magical. I’ve never owned an automatic tranny car in 44 years of driving , 40 years of track days and 2 seasons of racing, the 4RS is the first non-manual I’ve owned and there’s no way in hell I’d trade the PDK for a manual. This PDK is as charismatic and entertaining as the engine. It’s hard to describe, it feels like a manual gearbox controlled by paddles rather than an automatic that can also shift with paddles. As someone who’s owned both, if the 4RS were offered with either a manual or PDK, it would be PDK all day long and I’d keep a manual Ferrari with gated shifter if I wanted the best of the best in a manual gearbox experience.

Both exceptional vehicles. I’d be happy with either but from a practical standpoint, I like the top mechanism on the Spyder a little more and I think the RS is just a bit too loud for prolonged driving. Plus I’d save about $50k that I could spend on gas, insurance and maintenance.

Everyone always wants more power. That's why that Spyder has an exhaust & tune to make more power. Is there more to the SRS than just power?
Absolutely, that transmission is out of this world. I have been a die-hard manual guy for 50+ years, but until you really drive an SRS, select PDK-S and put your foot into it, don't presume you know what it feels like, you don't.
Let's not forget that intake sound it's just WOW! It sounds great in this video, but it's even better in person. It makes the car feel alive, as if it has a soul!
The suspension is fantastic for the road. For hard driving, I would increase camber, it's adjustable to 2.5 degrees.
IMO, if you can afford an SRS, then get the SRS. If it's out of your budget, the regular Spyder is also a great car. Midengined Porsche the 718, what 911s should have. Well, at least the 911RSR was midengined.

Didn't like the interior choices and deal breaker. No manual. I think for the significant added cost, you give up way to much with the manual and the top to make it worth the step up. JMHO.

How much more powerful did the RS motor feel compared to the Cobb tuned spyder? Curious because, at least with the APR tune, there isn’t a huge difference in paper. APR 93 tune makes 459 crank HP and 347 crank torques. But then the RS has much shorter gearing so is putting more torque to the pavement.

I have a 2023 718 Spyder and absolutely love it. I looked at the Spyder RS, but I wanted a MT. My 991.1 GTS is also manual. In my opinion, going faster is not what this car is about. If that's what you are looking for, look at getting the DeMan engine upgrade for $35K. This car is about driving the back roads of the Texas Hill Country or Arkansas' Ozarks (if you live in the US, you must attend Porsche Palooza in Eureka Springs, AK). Finally, I do not get where anyone thinks the price difference is only $50K. I paid a premium for my CPO Spyder of $18,500 so around $140K for the car. The 4 dealers in Texas that would guarantee their allocation was asking $75K over sticker. This would make the car closer to $250K, so about $100K more. Is the RS $100K better, no way. At $250K, a MT GT3 would be glorious.
