My circumstances are obviously very different for various reasons ~ I'm in the UK, am alone and am retired. The only appliance running constantly is my small under the counter fridge. We don't have loadshedding here in the sense that you do in SA, but after all the drama and fearmongering about energy across Europe last winter, and the possibility of being without power for several days is a very real possibility. Our winters are very cold, dark and wet, so I felt preparation for several potential scenarios was sensible. After much research and discussion with likeminded friends across the country here, I decided to go for the Jackery Explorer 1000 ~ which seemed like the best option for my particular circumstances. I saved a bit longer and bought one of those folding solar panels, so am as well set up as I can be. Along with the numerous smaller things I've done over time I'm about as best prepared as I can be right now for the coming winter. Very interesting and useful discussion and information ~ thank you Des 🇿🇦👍
Good points for people to consider. A maze of products for those who dont understand. Flexopower Lithium units is also a great product that is manufactured locally and designed for portability. The best feature is the battery can be replaced where as all these chinese ones require replacing the whole unit at the end of their life.
Thanks Des, I did something similar but it included poring over all the specifications which was laborious but worthwhile. Found several units with banks of burglar alarm 12V 7ah batteries strung together internally to make up the input voltage and Ah requirements ! The flaw with them is that it takes 20 hours to recharge to any usable capacity ! Then a lot of them had explicit instructions to NOT leave them plugged into the mains, so they could not charge and supply your needs ! Some have dual EU plug outlets, but the adaptors cannot fit side by side ! So the buyers must beware !
We have converted our generators to work on gas. We now save almost two thirds when using gas. To travel and work, I bought a small gene (before lockdown) for R700. Current price is R3000. Then we have a gas stove. The next item on my list is a gas geyser.
I purchased a Mecer 1200VA/2400VA inverter with deep cycle battery in March 2022 as I work from home. I had to replace the battery in January 2023 but that's fine. It worked perfectly from the get go. Although I can't run a kettle or hairdryer on it I'm never without electricity, mine is small enough to take with although it isnt a portable as per say. I use 15 watt solar lights that I put in the sun during the day to use evenings and mounted 40 watt solar lights outside. I have a gas geyser and gas stove and constructed a rainwater harvesting system. Our town was without water for 4 days a while ago and my brother helped me to temporarily connect ny rainwater container to my pressure washer (just to pump the water) which in turn connected to the gas geyser water flow. I was able to shower. I also made my own manual washing machine which we've used a few times. Next in line is an iron powered by paraffin to iron clothes, super excited about that!
This was very useful. I also purchased deep cycle gel batteries for my solar system when I first installed it. A year down the line those batteries are dead. They use to work for 3 hours or longer and now only lasts for 3 or 4 minutes before dying. LiFeP04 is the way to go.

Thanks Des. Sharing your research on this item is appreciated. Maybe its time to get a sponsor or 2 on board? 😁 yes i agree, the 3 year guarantee is excellent, noise levels thats low is important, super fast charging in 1.5 hours and UPS function included. Price is good, lightweight at 6kg, very portable. Awesome specs for the Red E power station💫
Dezz can you tell me where you bought your exact Red-e please? I am asking cause i cannot make out your words when you say in the video where you bought it.
Dezz I am on 24\7 oxygen, I am 76 yrs old. I have a machine that makes oxygen for me provided by Vitalair. I bought a small generator and find te cost of petrol very high. also people in the flats where I live complain about the noise although it stands outside the building away from tenants. Any advice please?
Hi Dez! Can one run a powerful hairdryer off this battery? I often rise at 2:00 am to shower and begin work - loadshedding in the early hours of the morning during Winter, prohibits hair washing which is problematic. Kindest regards, Delphia
The specs are incomparable. 300W vs 800W. The River 2 Max only has 500w output. This is at R1500 more with zero extra benefit. The Max charge time from zero to 100% is 1 hour, however the Red E delivers 800w after 90 minutes charge time. You cannot compare the two. Not in the same class although their watt hour rating is the same. The Red E has a better margin battery.
I have no opinion on any brand battery. You have to look at your fridge power consumption including peak start wattage. Then you do the math wrt watt hours needed to run your fridge according to your needs. Batteries are rated in watt hours. You will need an inverter and I recommend a pure sine wave inverter. Many devices will not function properly or even get damaged with a dirty supply.
Fridges have induction motors you need a pure sinewave inverter rated at minimum of 3times the wattage of your fridge just to start the compressor then batteries are rated in ampere hoor for example 80 ampere hour which theoretically means you can draw 80 amps for 1 hoor but most batteries should not be discharged below 50% of their rating therefore 40 amps x 12volts give you 480watts for 1 hour so if you use 48watts it can run safely for 10 hours, always find out the kilowatt hour rating of the battery and the number or time you can charge and discharge it before it wears out
Can you let me have the model number Did you then say you had another battery in addition to what comes with the portable. I was about to get the Magneto 600 watt.
Where can I purchase this battery. Please give me a full discription I need one. Valuable information thank you because I'm not so clued up in electronics.
Research, research research. Read the specifications and if you don't understand what it means research some more😂. I'm a mid 50s lady and I even understand now. But research even if it takes you a month but at least you will know what y need and want. Look at the wattage you need (somewhere on the appliance is a sticker) and then also look at the different battery types and what are the pros and cons. If I can do this so can you! Trust ne I'm not a rocket scientist like Des 😂
The most knowledgeable staff I have encountered out of any mainstream franchise or group I have visited has been Outdoor Warehouse. They dealt with this type of equipment before load shedding came along. They also have their own brands. You can buy a normal deep cycle battery of 100Ahours for R3k. That will give you 2000watthours plus. You need to get an inverter that can handle your load. They also sell these. They have normal as well as UPS inverters.
Depending on the type of battery you cannot take it below 50% or 80% of capacity used or it will deteriorate rapidly. It is important to get a battery that is at least 2 times the time and power usage rating you need. Mine is 3 times that for good measure.
Even if the 'kill the farmer kill the board is not literal, it still influences the masses for violence! 🤷🏻♀️ so the EFF MUST NOT sing such songs! Music is very powerful....Should we also start singing racist songs and kkk chants????
512 watt hours. At 800 watt you will empty the battery in less than one hour. My consumption is around 130w max so I will get about 4 hours or more as my main load is 109watt at max capacity.
The idgidz in my 'hood learned a new word: inverter. And do they throw that word around just anywhere. Even dear old Eskom call a UPS an "inverter.". But, people don't understand "inverter" just as they don't understand "monocoque". Neither can they pronunciate. Just think of Louis Thibault. He became Thai Bawled in Cape Town.
It is rated for 800w continuous and 1600w peak. This means that it can only run a fridge with a 500w inverter or compressor as the starting current peaks at at least three times running current and that translates to watts. So you can easily run a 500w fridge. Camp fridges are around 40w. Normal fridges vary depending on size.
The one we have for this specific purpose will be fine under stage 8 conditions. Beyond that it is not the recharge time that is a problem but the amp hours of the battery.
Bad product, I have one and the ups function does not work, got them to replace it and the new one has the same problem. Ups is the most important function for a product like this, I advise you spend your money elsewhere

I also only cook on gas.

Rather go modular and scalable units.

Thanks Des, that was very helpful and timely.

Hi there, if you were to choose between the Flexopower 555 and the Red-E Power Station 512 which would you go for ?
Sorry, The Ecoflow Delta 2 all the way !
1900w/h and 5 year warentee.
Sorry. They are not in the same class. How can you compare them? The one up of the RED E beats the Delta flow 2 on all specs and cost.
Thank you for this, many of us have made that fatal investment in a unfit for purpose device.
What a negative impact on the economy with the for ever increasing fuel prices. This WILL ultimately kill the economy
