    Most laptop from major OEMs will disable this in the BIOS. Chinese companies tend to leave their chips unlocked.

      Surprisingly, practically the last company you would expect, Apple, is one of the few to remove all TDP limits, and just allows the chips to run up to their full turbo until they hit tjunction max temps.

    • @th3guardian154
      @th3guardian154 6 років тому +2

      Yep, evident by the fact that no matter what I do, there still is the 17W TDP lock after turbo (carefully monitoring in either XTU or ThrottleStop).

    • @TabalugaDragon
      @TabalugaDragon 6 років тому +2

      th3guardian same here. can't go above 15 watt tdp after prolonged usage. Intel and laptop manufacturing companies should really remove this limit and allow processors run up to their max clock speeds as long as temperatures are ok. After all, it's not the i3-s, these are i5-s and i7-s which have turbo boost we pay for.

    • @th3guardian154
      @th3guardian154 6 років тому

      Indeed, it's not actually Intel's fault, but most of the time the 3rd party manufacturers like HP, Dell, etc.
      I have a new HP with i5 8250U but as soon as the turbo window is gone the tdp is locked to 15-17W. I've tried going around this with ThrottleStop using the TPL window, but nothing helps. (Even though those options are NOT locked for me which would indicate that they are not BIOS locked for me, as they should? Maybe it's because of DPTF then, but nothing makes sense.)

    That's really amazing. I remember back in 2014 when I received my new gaming laptop and ran a cpu test. It was a disaster. The i7-4800MQ just kept throttling even though there are 3 pipes to transfer the heat. Undervolting bearly lowered the temperature to 80 some degrees Celsius, but at least the processor finished cinebench r15 multithread test with 690 points, so yay.

    I would love to see the results based on individual adjustments, I feel that the uniengine benchmark would've yielded similar results with just the gpu overclock. Most games are gpu bound and my cpu in the xiaomi never exceeds 40%. I have bios 502 and in addition to this, I'm experiencing a weird issue where XTU won't install because it says unsupported platform - with stats up on the screen during gaming I cannot justify risking a rollback of the bios and a reinstall of windows to get xtu working all for the sake of an undervolt.

    • @ethaningoa7461
      @ethaningoa7461 5 років тому +1

      Weirdly, some games really prefer clock speeds over the cores so 40% may not be a relevant statistic. I think performance will be better on this laptop with a higher clock speed

    • @Ashleycb97
      @Ashleycb97 5 років тому

      @@ethaningoa7461 Not really 100% sure what you mean but sort of get it. If you are running a game and your CPU usage is 50% for example, a boost in clock speed is not going to boost your FPS . I finally managed to undervolt my i5-8250U by 100Mv and have next to no performance increase . The only way it has provided a benefit is ofc with reduced thermals and a higher clock speed for the same 15w TDP. In addition in extreme situations where the CPU was for example at 80% and created loads of heat which would reduce my GPU clock by about 80MHZ , that has now been removed. I wouldn't expect a boost in performance if your CPU is not being fully utilized in the first place or if thermals from it are hindering your GPU clocks.

    Thank you for this vid! I just got an Acer E5-576G with Core i5 8250u. Tried XTU (-0.100v, max turbo power to 40w).
    My results are more modest: around 7-8% increase in Cinebench R15, from 526 to 570. Perhaps the cooling solution of my laptop is not as good. Or it could be that the ambient temp in my room was already 32 C to begin with.
    I'm still happy with the results. Plus 8% is not trivial. Also, the sustained all-core frequency jumped from ~2.3Ghz to ~2.6Ghz. This means even better performance when used under load for hours at a time (instead of 1 minute in Cinebench). Cheers!

      goku uchiha Sorry bro but I haven't tried, and I am no longer into games these days. Btw I switched from Intel XTU to Throttlestop, since XTU occasionally reverts to original settings (i.e. it removes the undervolt) for no clear reason. Throttlestop is more stable in my experience.

    An official intel app that basically allows not simply tuning but actual overclocking of LAPTOP processors. I remember that it wasn't always that easy to tune power states and undervolt some core2 models. And in terms of increasing performance it was totally impossible. But now Intel's giving away such a wonderful tuning tool. Inconceivable!

    • @longhairedanon
      @longhairedanon 7 років тому +1

      IxBoost don't get too excited, on this processor it just allows the CPU to use more power. Don't think Intel has gone and hooked it up for us overclockers.

      you aren't technically "overclocking" in the sense that you aren't increasing the max multiplier set for the CPU cores (well not with the 8th gen Intel chips anyway, you can on some other chips), you are just removing the limits that make these CPU's reduce clock speed, think of it like GPU Boost 3.0 on Nvidia GPU's, the more you reduce the temperature the higher it will clock itself within the range the card is designed for.

    • @smokeweed856

      I don't reccomend doing that, the mx110 usually comes with an i5 8250u, if that is the case for u, don't overclock....there is only so little power provided to the computer, overclocking the gpu will limit the power given to the cpu and not all cores will be used at full potential. That will cause a decrease of performance instead of an increase

      I've been testing it, video ecoding at 4k 100% CPU use, 4 cores a solid 3.4Ghz the hold time for 20 minutes. 65 degrees C max in 25 degrees C room. But once you add the GPU and also max that the CPU will hit 81 degrees C and GPU about 69 degrees. So no thermal throttling. But it does get hot above the keyboard.

One of reasons I love Intel is because they allowed undervolting since the 4-th gen. And disabling it again feels like going back to stoneage.

    • @NZRoflcopter
      @NZRoflcopter 6 років тому

      Yeah the i7 model doesn't really seem worth it, especially considering that if you look past the deceptive naming scheme Intel uses with laptop CPUs, the i7 is the same as the i5 except with 100MHz higher base and 200MHz higher boost clocks, not like in desktops where the i7's actually offer more threads.

      how much i can undervolting 8550?

    • @TabalugaDragon
      @TabalugaDragon 6 років тому

      NZRoflcopter it may be worth for programs that may take higher cache into advantage though(I think photo\video editing programs do?). i7 has 1\3 more cache than i5. Other than that - yeah not a big difference, sicne both procesors would throttle under prolonged use and won't be able to stay at max clock speeds for a long time, even with udnervolting.

    • @NZRoflcopter
      @NZRoflcopter 6 років тому

      Yeah it'll probably have a noticeable boost over the i5 but not huge.

    • @NZRoflcopter

      Yes, however it wouldn't be as significant as you might think as that 5W decrease will only count when the CPU is under load, and even then isn't all that significant when you take into account total system power usage rather than just CPU power usage.

    How much is battery life decreased compared to stock?

    • @NZRoflcopter
      @NZRoflcopter 6 років тому

      I don't really know, but I'd estimate it's about halved under heavy loads. This modification allows the CPU to use almost triple the power compared to stock and increases the GPU power usage. However it won't increase the power usage of the screen and other components.

    • @TabalugaDragon
      @TabalugaDragon 6 років тому

      NZRoflcopter or maybe it's the other way around and battery life increased, since undervolting basically makes processor work more efficiently.

    • @NZRoflcopter
      @NZRoflcopter 6 років тому

      At a given clock speed, yes, but increasing the power limit as he did will cause the machine to run at much higher clock speeds. The CPU will adjust it's power usage to match the limit he specified, provided it isn't being throttled for other reasons like temps.

      it's a bit too high. I recommend keeping it around 80 degrees C for prolongued usage. For short-term usage a little above 90 is ok. You can install throttlestop program and control frequency directly through there, it also allows undervolting just like XTU.

      download new Windows 10 Home iso with your preferred language on Microsoft website, mount it, run setup in it. You can either choose update or new install. The new installed Windows will recognize your key automatically.

      Pratik Sarkar this is how it worked on my mi air 12 inch model: create and log into the Microsoft account, update your system (not sure if needed), perform a clean Windows installation from Microsoft website ( DON'T choose the single language version, just the normal multi language Windows 10 home), after the installation your Windows should be automatically activated with the key of the Chinese version ( make sure it's activated before you start). It worked for me, i have a clean Windows 10 home in English without any bloatware
