Holy shit I haven't seen/heard of this game since the last time I played it! Also over 20+ years ago! My Uncle used to have this on his PC in his basement, and I'll never forget playing it because in his computer room was this huge ham radio and whenever I went down there, turned off the lights, played this while he was on his radio haha it was just like being in a submarine! Well, almost.
I used to think the graphics were so cool in this game. If I recall, it came with a manual that had info on all the ships. Microprose made some great games back then!
I prefered Red Storm Rising over Silent Service 2. I had both games for my PC but the time wasn't just right for WW2 submarine games that live from nice graphics.
Andre Ford Microprose did make the best sims didn't they and their manuals were always huge and loaded with great info....Miss the great companies like that....
James Barnes That is true. I would give up the eye candy if there is excellent gameplay that can keep me interested. That is one reason I have recently reloaded some of the old classics like X-Com and Red Storm Rising. There is a lot of good stuff out there right now though as you mentioned.
Andre Ford lmao...I keep my SX 64 ....,and the main thing I play on it are all the old microprose titles and red storm is still one of the best...Gunship also....M1tank platoon...
I remember getting this game in 91, learning about the battle of Midway in school and parking my sub on the historical Japanese fleet positions in hopes of changing history by torpedoeing at least one of the 4 big carriers. Fleet command sure was mad at me for not patrolling near the Phillipines as i should have.
I learnt a lot about the WWII with this game. I played this hours and hours when I was a child and I loved it. It was very inmmersive, tactic, estrategic... Warships are faster and with much greater firepower and range than your submarine. You have to think and come up with a good plan when you find well-protected aircraft carriers. Have an escape plan prepared and know how to stay calm and deceive enemies when you are submerged, resisting depth charges It was glorious when things went well for you, you managed to destroy very important objectives and get out of there alive I have always thought about how those brave sailors encased in a metal tube underwater must feel in these situations. Very good feelings with this game
That was probably my first PC game... uffff I was 13.... I remembered when I follow the ship trying to sneak in the harbor, like in Hollywood films... or when you meet a task force... What a game!!! 😭😭😭😭👍
The one thing that I really liked about the Microprose version over the NES game was that the computer version had a bonus war patrol that it offered entitled "Cavalla Hits the Jackpot", where you if you completed previous patrols, your reward was to stalk and sink the Japanese carrier IJN Shokaku. That was quite a treat.😃👍
When you find your sub in the middle of an enemy fleet (at night), the first thing you do is CRASH DIVE. Maybe fire a couple of torps on the way down. But don't hang out on the surface in a SUBMARINE.
0:22 ...😁😁😁...oooohhhh my goooooooood !!!! ...this was a long...long ...time ago !!! Thanx for reviving the memory of night inhalling tobbaco smokes in my home town only internet cafe and playing this until literally keeling over from the seat due to exhaustion...😂😂😂🍺🍺🍺🍺🍺👍
I remember the early patrols will often have those poor visibility close encounters. I would always immediately pause and dive and all ahead stop. Then as you're diving fire all your tubes to what you can see front or rear. Obviously this is much easier if you're using the TDC.
I was very interested to play this early 90’s, but I felt something was just not there; it was a bit boring. 688 Attack Sub was much more interesting and exciting. Check it out, if in to sub games. Another good early sub game is Hunt For Red October from 1987 that had the right feel. This was one of my first games, so it was quite simple.
I'll admit, I cheated as a kid playing this game. I would save before every torpedo I shot, then load and aim a bit to the left or right next time until I hit, haha!
Ah, memories! I used to sit up all-night long-playing war careers. And I was shouting, "Pick the Narwhal, pick the Narwhal!" Reason: 2 guns. Sick the escort with torps, then surface and destroy the merships with two 5" guns.
@butchtropic Silent Service on the NES was the only WWII simulation game I ever played, and I was only around maybe 11 years old...but somehow I managed and yet it's too "boring" for a 20 year old??
Good game. I bought it in 1990 when 3.5-inch floppies were still relevant, and it played well on all of my PCs that came with floppy drives. After PC manufacturers stopped making computers with those drives, I was screwed. That is, until Tommo/Retroism re-released it through Steam. One question: Why didn't you use the TDC to help your torpedo/gunnery accuracy? You wasted at least one torpedo in your first battle.
I think i had forgotten the TDC function and the "key" to press for it back when i record this video. I remember founding that out later and after 20 years since last play you forget things ;)
Sounds like you've got it running with MT-32 sound working. I'm having a heck of a time figuring out how to set it for MT-32. Any tips? I've got all the necessary software.. Just can't get the game to change it's sound output. =/
i think this game was kind of "OK" but Aces of the deep and Silent Hunter were much much better and then Silent Hunter 2, which could be crossplayed with Destroyer Command was in another level (despite the shitty graphics it had for 1998 standars) in 2005 Silent Hunter 3 (+ GWX3) brought what i consider the "bes of all time" WW2 submarine simulator. It might have their shortcommings but a 2020 sub simulator should take a lot of that game, who only needs incremental improvements (and many many more ship models)
childhood favourite game! got quite good at it I think, completed war many times on ultimate, favourite setup was when battleship/aircraft carrier started close to you, with visual contact, much harder with radar contact from 1942
You can adjust the auto TDC a little bit to the left or right when locked on. As a kid I used to cheat by saving then loading if I missed. Heh! I would take out the destroyers first with "down the throat shots" then surface and deck-gun the merchies.
Bought it, had it, played it, didn't like it much, but it was essentially one of the few sub sims on the market at the time. Microprose was owned by cult leader Sun Myung Moon, who tried to show how much he loved the USA by creating easy to play games with a military and patriotic bent. This was one such game. Looking him up....thank goodness he passed away eight years ago. May his memory do the same.

That's the best part of being a children. Imagination we no longer have.
I’m a ham radio operator.
It can be really fun, especially on ARRL Field Day.
I used to think the graphics were so cool in this game. If I recall, it came with a manual that had info on all the ships. Microprose made some great games back then!
It had a beautiful binded manual and a huge overlay for your keyboard.
Microprose game guide department should definately be decorated with heavy metal!
Great history - great sims.
Whenever I watch video of some jewel game from my childhood, I expect to see Microprose logo.
They sure did!! Silent Service was loads of fun! I played it in my game room with all the lights off and it was so cool!
I prefered Red Storm Rising over Silent Service 2. I had both games for my PC but the time wasn't just right for WW2 submarine games that live from nice graphics.
AYE AYE SIR AYE AYE SIR AYE AYE SIR AYE AYE SIR AYE AYE SIR AYE AYE SIR AYE AYE SIR
Rofl, It's still better graphics than I was expecting.
this game really holds up. I played it when I was a young military history obsessed tween 20 years ago and I still occasionally play it today.
Nice!
Wow, another blast from the past! Lost many hours on this sim as well. Back then MicroProse ruled!
Andre Ford Microprose did make the best sims didn't they and their manuals were always huge and loaded with great info....Miss the great companies like that....
James Barnes Yeah, they have gone by the wayside. Completely different mindset nowadays.
Andre Ford
Yeah, all suits running the business now but that is changing some of the indies are making some real interesting stuff these days...

What history of Midway were you trying to rewrite?!? Lol
Spent many hours on SS2 in the 90's. Amazing game, great fun even now.
Amazing to see this again - fantastic bit of nostalgia (and memories of watching my now departed father play this).
I learnt a lot about the WWII with this game. I played this hours and hours when I was a child and I loved it. It was very inmmersive, tactic, estrategic...

I think this was either my first or second game I ever had for PC.
That was probably my first PC game... uffff I was 13.... I remembered when I follow the ship trying to sneak in the harbor, like in Hollywood films... or when you meet a task force...
What a game!!! 😭😭😭😭👍
I played this game so much back on my 386/33. The memories!
I spent, not hours, but entire DAYS playing this great game
Me too :)
...😂😂😂....you where not alone with this ...😂😂😂🍺🍺🍺🍺🍺👍
through a pc speaker always sounded like "my eyes hurt"
Hahahaha
And now I can't hear anything else lol
what he really said was "my ears hurt" With a strange accent... maybe a german defector.

I played the hell out of this on an IBM PCjr. Great memories.

10:29 That's when you sweat really bad.
Aye, but much easier to sink ships, hardest is day battles miles away when it's 'your periscope is visible at 7488, radar contact harder still
Remember watching my dad play. Always got so nervous and scared when the depth charges came.

Just watched the movie Greyhound with Tom Hanks - made me remember this game big time.
I remember the early patrols will often have those poor visibility close encounters. I would always immediately pause and dive and all ahead stop. Then as you're diving fire all your tubes to what you can see front or rear. Obviously this is much easier if you're using the TDC.

great memories. I managed to sink 3,yes three, Yamato class battleships in one random battle
Really? There were only two ever built!
I know... it probably was the Shinano completed as a battleship.
You're lucky they didn't fire the wave motion gun!
I'm calling bullshit on that sorry
I'll admit, I cheated as a kid playing this game. I would save before every torpedo I shot, then load and aim a bit to the left or right next time until I hit, haha!
This game was my first experience with Sub-sims. I gotta admit its graphics looked even better in my memories and imagination!

This brings back many memories - thanks for posting - wish this would work on modern systems.
Get DOSbox still works
You can get it on Steam, with a DOSbox upgrade built in.
I us play this game a lot man I miss it
Hope MicroProse2020 makes another Silent Service. Uboat is great, but we need more!
@butchtropic yeah, everything has to cater to air-headed Millennials and Zennials with the attention span of a gnat, I guess.
@butchtropic Silent Service on the NES was the only WWII simulation game I ever played, and I was only around maybe 11 years old...but somehow I managed and yet it's too "boring" for a 20 year old??
Doesn't Firaxis own this one?
Man. My dad rented the silten service on the nes. And that game scared me. So Erie.
Kei used to play this on my 386 PC in 1994.

@@thriftweeds That makes sense.
Hopefully. you remembered which key activates the TDC. If memory serves, it's the "/"" key.
I played this game for hours and I loved it so much! Is there a way to play it in an ms dos emulator?
This is still one of, if not _the,_ best submarine simulation games ever made.
@@Mechanized85 Silent Hunter 3
Great video
Yes, that's how we played back then
They need to bring these games to the switch, I miss good submarine simulator games for consoles

Freakin' irritates me that you don't lock onto the target in your scope!
No worries.
Aye aye i forgot the freaking "lock on" key !!!
@@thriftweeds Haha! No worries "noob" ;)
I miss that game
I think if you stayed at 25 ft you were in good shape
I feel like the graphics in SS 1 on nes were better. But I like the war game career mode thing. I wish it was in SS1.
Erinnerungen werden wach :-) ... als dann auch noch Jahre später Silent Hunter rauskam, das war der nächste Meilenstein :-)
I remember this game, from long before Silent Hunter IV.
i think this game was kind of "OK" but Aces of the deep and Silent Hunter were much much better

AYE AYE, SIR
I got nostalgia in my pants
That "Aye, aye, sir" has GOT to stop.
The grahpics look so bad by today's standards! I remember thinking how good they were and how cool the game was.
I played this game a lot.
Very tough game!!
Great Sim !!!!!
Not as crazy as “Silent Hunter” but still decent.
In regards to real MP, Silent Hunter never had MP (useless coop only)..,... they failed to release the destroyer part. So sad.
favourite subs by far, Narwhal class
One mistake I've seen didn't turn on tdc
*dog whistle* “aye aye Sir”
u have to lock the target b4 u fire
Used to play the shit out of this back in the early 90s. And all the other games shown at the start asides from Red Storm Rising.
Silent Service 2.
Excelente juego
11:15 ...😂😂😂🍺🍺🍺🍺🍺👍
I love SS2
ARRRGH! Press "L" to lock on! Haha!
I like to anticipate and oversee the target angle without "lock on" just in the middle
You can adjust the auto TDC a little bit to the left or right when locked on. As a kid I used to cheat by saving then loading if I missed. Heh!
