I think they ported to a new engine and enhanced the graphics check out the EA roadmap to see how it will, progress beyond the original’s gameplay/features.
Captures the 'Spirit' of the Original game exactly. The original was a very Sim-lite as they are known now, something anyone can pick up, play for however long, have some fun imagining they are a Heroic Captain, without having to Patrol for an age to seek targets, plot an intercept then work out solutions. Or to get younger players interested in the genre. So, maybe it will attract then, those who play the game to seek out something more in the vein of a simulation in the future or just be happy with this level of gameplay, without worrying that Torpedo reloading times are off and there's not enough rivets running down the side of the Conning Tower. More Submarine games and sims the better, everyone doesn't need to be a study sim, and maybe more of those will come as a result. For the asking price, it looks great fun with decent graphics for a revamp of the original, old title. For anyone interested - Crash Dive 2 set in the same theatre is also an excellent game all round with a similar style, crew management lite and Patrol Log. The Dev on Crash Dive 2 has constantly updated and tuned the game along with releasing a couple map maps of areas of operation as DLC's.
Tactics my boy, tactics. If youre gonna attack with torpedoes, plot your preys course and steam well ahead of her, then lie in wait at periscope depth until she comes in range. Charging right at your objective invites evasive maneuvers and fire from enemy deck guns if so equipped.
The depth-charge explosions were very good. The sea needs some work, and I would've gone through the target identification manual to see what all ships are in the game. I was considering buying it because of the price, but I think I'll wait on this one for a bit.
There must have been a jump cut between leaving the port and finding those two tankers that I just didn't notice. I thought for sure that being so close to the US sub port that they must be allied shipping, as well as the port having incredibly deep water. Either that or the Japanese captains must absolutely have death wishes. Clearly, some time had passed, and the sub was now well out to sea.
Given what I'm seeing, I'll stick with SH4 for now. Its such a shame that there aren't many realistic American subsims considering the impact it had on the war.
I would love to see a realistic version of this for the first two years of the Pacific War. No matter what you’d do you couldn’t win The Mark 14 torpedo would, porpoise, run too deep, run in a circle (maybe hit your sub), go in a weird direction, hit your target and just bounce off with a thunk and no explosion. It would be kinda hilarious
Those are sharp Mk14s! Yamato on the first hunt!? IJN 's morale definitely sunk with her. Captain surely got a visit from someone high up after that patrol.
UBOAT just set a VERY high bar for future sub sims in general so this will need a lot of work to catch up, especially since that dev is still pumping out great updates directly after launch. Best of luck to it though, the pacific theatre is always nice to see in a game.
The depth charges in this game looks superb! also their damage looks more realistic (you get damaged from further than SH or at least this is the feeling)
i never liked naval games,i tried to skip ships in games whenever i could, but your channel especially made me fall in love with that "genre", i am now somewhat of a kaleun of our own little crew in wolfpack myself and i thank you so much for it, i am now a u-boat enthusiastic and i think i must buy this game aswell haha. Der BdU is ne einzige Sauzucht.
Wtf Yamato that quick?! Depth charges look cool. Also lol ‘I had a lot of fun getting depth charged’ doesn’t ring true to me in a submarine game for some reason. Funny as though 😂
I have missed Silent Service. Sometimes I feel like digging my old C64 out of the garage just to play it, but I would be surprised if the disk, disk drive, or C64 worked after 40 years.
Since the Captain can determine the settings and give the order to fire torpedoes from the periscope, this arcade style is actually more realistic than having to mess with all those settings. The graphics look pretty good apart from the drips on the lens, and aiming the deck gun would be better with some cross-hairs.
not complaining, a new sub sim game is always welcome and for sure this gives me SH4 vibes, but I have seen far better water. I hope they improve on that, other than that seems a pretty cool game all around
problem im seeing is the lack of interaction between the sea and the boat. it appears like they are entirely seperated by code and have no influence on eachother. no pitch and roll surfacing looks like you had a bunch of baloons tied to the boat. however the time they spent on the graphics did indeed pay off
I've been watching your Silent Hinter III Type IX campaign from Lorient/St. Nazaire for the past week and am thoroughly enjoying it. Watching this feels more like an arcade version of a sub sim. There doesn't seem to be much in the way of realism when placing targets on the map. They all seem to pop out of nowhere and with no realistic meaning. Even in hard mode, this looks simple to someone like you. Perhaps to an initiate in sub sims, this can be a beginner game that perhaps leads to Silent Hunter.
I got kind of excited seeing this video in my recommended feed. I watched the first several minutes and couldn't take it anymore. Wolfpack, you're better than this. This does not look like a good game. It looks like the Wish version of SH4, and event that is giving it too much credit.
If you watch the series "the silent service" episode one, you'll notice that many phrases were cut out from that exact episode. Also, it is copied from silent hunter 1, not silent service 2; that's why most of the controls are similar to silent hunter series games.
I'm kind of tempted by this one but I find myself a bit on the fence too. While I'd like to experience hunting across the Pacific in a Gato class, I read some of the reviews and some have advised the game feels "very arcadey". I realise that this title is a lite-sim but how lite are we actually talking? The roadmap also appears a little anaemic.
If you're willing to play a "light" game like this, then I would love to hear your thoughts on Crash Dive 2. It's similar, but I think more mature since it's been out for a couple of years.

Not bad for a 10 dollar game. I hope they keep updating it and don't throw it to the back. It has some potential to be a great game.
played Silent Service 1 on the C-64 for I couldn't count how many hours :D
Close but ... needs a proper TDC and manual plotting for added realism.
It’s not supposed to be realistic
I said that on the steam forum for this game long before it was ever released.
Devs didn't reply.
torpedo hits look like napalm
Tactics my boy, tactics. If youre gonna attack with torpedoes, plot your preys course and steam well ahead of her, then lie in wait at periscope depth until she comes in range. Charging right at your objective invites evasive maneuvers and fire from enemy deck guns if so equipped.
Silent Service 2 was one of my favorite games. I played it constantly.
I spent countless hours playing Silent Service 1 and 2 on my pc back in the day.Loved it!!!!
The submerged depth charge effect was very good. I had to rewatch it few times
back in the 80's I played anything Microprose. I hope they put out games equally fantastic now as they did then.
Honestly that was a great video my friend and the engagement with the warships was great thank you
Silent Service is my all time favorite SNES game.
At this point I want to see an O-19 game, our favorite little buddy
Id love to see a Japanese sub campaign!
Those are sharp Mk14s! Yamato on the first hunt!? IJN 's morale definitely sunk with her. Captain surely got a visit from someone high up after that patrol.
So far nothing beats GWX oneAlex edition of SH3 for me.
i love how you make 20 miles out of Midway and cross path with 2 japanese tankers, very realistic convoy route for the Japanese merchant fleet
Those weren't Japanese tankers... 😎
7:10 watch out for them circular runs! 😬
I have missed Silent Service. Sometimes I feel like digging my old C64 out of the garage just to play it, but I would be surprised if the disk, disk drive, or C64 worked after 40 years.
arcade (not a sim)
Since the Captain can determine the settings and give the order to fire torpedoes from the periscope, this arcade style is actually more realistic than having to mess with all those settings. The graphics look pretty good apart from the drips on the lens, and aiming the deck gun would be better with some cross-hairs.
Reminds me of Silent Service on the C64 (that was designed by Sid Meier and published by MicroProse...amazing what they achieved with 64k of memory)
not complaining, a new sub sim game is always welcome and for sure this gives me SH4 vibes, but I have seen far better water. I hope they improve on that, other than that seems a pretty cool game all around
problem im seeing is the lack of interaction between the sea and the boat. it appears like they are entirely seperated by code and have no influence on eachother. no pitch and roll surfacing looks like you had a bunch of baloons tied to the boat. however the time they spent on the graphics did indeed pay off
i remember you. i have silent service 4 play it all the time. great graphics on this one
The depth charge graphics are the best I've ever seen. The rest of the game is a good foundation. Lets hope it keeps getting better from here.
looks alot better than the first silent service, which I played on NES lol Good video!
Awesome first look Wolf! Looks pretty good, hopefully they add a few features. For only $15 CAD tho I might pick it up
I love microprose. Such a great studio
Im away from my pc for a few weeks so im excited to watch you play. I planned on buying but its good to see gameplay first.
Ooh, I love Silent Service 2!! Can't wait to check this out.
Wolfpack, would you rather take the Cuttlefish or the Vanilla paste?
Depth charge explosions look cool
Ask for a destroyer, get the Yamato.....Thanks for the play-thru, think I will wait and see how this is when it comes out fully baked.
Played the C-64 of "Silent Service" years ago. Miss a good sub game
@Wolfpack345 did you play with the Sub Sim guys years and years ago?
Really nice video, Wolfpack345. The game looks rather interesting.
Bring back silent hunter 4 🙏
The waves look like floating ice sheets. 🤣
0:16 "Silent Service II"
Me: _Now that's a name I've not heard in a long, time... a long time._
If you're willing to play a "light" game like this, then I would love to hear your thoughts on Crash Dive 2. It's similar, but I think more mature since it's been out for a couple of years.
