I am so lucky one random little plant shop I go to has a soil bar with coco coir and pumice and the smaller chunks of bark as well as worm castings. I’m going to try this soil mix with you!!!
I just want to tell you how much I enjoy your videos. I'm old enough to be your gtandma, that being said you make me smile, and educate me as well. Keep up the good work!!!!! You are the whole package.....informative and funny ♥️
Great ingredients. Pumice and Coco are great for aeration. I know it's an extra step but I do rinse and strain the Coir to get rid of excess salts and the fine particles that turns into sludge....the mix will be a lot more fluffier.
@@GoodandPlanty Definitely won't hurt to try on a small batch like enough for a 1 gallon or smaller pot. The marijuana growers on UA-cam are adamant about rinsing. They have great videos about this.
So I also got a giant brick of coco coir my first time and had.. a ton of fun breaking it down lol. I ended up taking a hack saw to it and that worked pretty well.
HAHAHA wow very similar experience. I thought about getting a mini saw once I realized how incredibly dense it was but ended up just soaking off the bit I wanted to use.
This is so good! I’m totally gonna buy that same orchid bark bc the stuff I got is way too big. I’m slowly making the move to making my own soil too and worm castings are on the list. Definitely looking forward to learning more about peat moss and the environment too because I only just learned about it being bad a few weeks ago. It would be cool if you got two of the same plant and used a cheaper big box soil with one and then your amended soil with the other, but all conditions the same otherwise and compare over time
i was so happy to find orchid bark that works for houseplant containers!! i'm excited to share updates. love the idea about the 'experiment'! was thinking about doing a fertilizer experiment too.
Just discovered you and have been watching some of your videos! They are super helpful. I just got a bunch of new house plants added to my collection and have been very curious about making my own soil from scratch when it's time to repot them. Thank you!
just make sure if you're using a coco brick make sure you go through the rinsing process or the finer particles of pete will water log your roots. tons of great vids on this but its not widely known outside the cannabis grower community
Worm castings!! They are versatile imo. I think they help with recovery plants too. I lightly top dressed a beat up monstera deliciosa because I felt worm castings were the most gentle fertilizer to give it a boost. Now it's pushing out new growth. I look forward to see how your custom soil mixture does for your plants!
i looooove worm castings. i didn't try it at first because i wasn't sure how to use it but now i realize that you can basically use it for everything lol
I am so excited I found your channel! Everything you post is so informative and just always happens to be exactly what i’m looking for. keep it up queenie!
I started using that same soil mix for my plants some time last Spring. It becomes a little expensive. I still have the different ingredients and decided on house plant soil with amendments instead. I did not feel all my plants were happy. They have all been thriving since. Good luck with the change. 😉
Interesting! I'm definitely curious on how this soil mix will work for me. I'm super lucky to have a little "plant budget" now from youtube revenue. I wasn't able to afford these materials before. We will see if it pays off! lol
I'm going to sterilise the compost I have as it's multi purpose and I don't want to risk fungus gnats etc, how do you add nutrients back into it? I have houseplant feed liquid etc
Hello! I loved the video, subscribed and liked! I’m just starting out with plants and would love your help. We don’t have coco coir here and I can’t really spend that much on soil. Would it be ok to just use regular soil mix + perlite and orchid bark as additive. The plants that I have are monstera deliciosa, monstera monkey leaf and a lot of pothos.
Yes!! My video on Friday (part 2) will talk about this exact topic. I know the materials in this video can be expensive and inaccessible so I wanted to provide everyone with both options. I would wait for that video and then let me know if you have any other questions. Thanks for watching!
Thanks for such informative and fun watching video! Do you use this specific combination for most indoor plants? I'm in a early stage of figuring out the soil mixing magic so kinda curious about the applicability of different combinations :)
Great video! I’m a new subscriber. I have a question about the “shelf life” of homemade potting soil. Can I make up a huge batch and keep it indefinitely? How quickly do you typically use yours up?
i think you can store soil for a while! i would just make sure the coco coir is fully dry and that you have a pretty secure, air tight container. i go through my batches every 2 months or so, but i could store it for way longer. when in doubt, the packaging of each ingredient may have some insight.
Girl I LOVE THIS VIDEO! I literally just made my own 'soil' today & used everything you used as well! How are you & your plants liking the no peat & this new mixture? I am going to stop using peat as well. Did you ever make the peat video ? Also how do you like that orchid bark? I was deciding between a few on Amazon and didn't know which one to pick. I got mine and it had like a white powdery substance on it 😭
Also how did it go when you tried breaking the coco coir brick? I could NOT break it off and had such a problem so I just got the whole brick wet ... now I am trying to dry off what I didn't use so I can store it away until I need it again. Curious to see how you stored any left over coco coir
thanks heather! i’ve been loving this mixture as well as the switch to coco coir and that orchid bark i mentioned. i did make that video but decided to archive it since i wasn’t happy with how i ended it. i did the same exact thing with my coir brick and store it in a plastic storage bin!
@@GoodandPlanty thanks for the reply girl !! So happy your loving the mixture! I decided to return the bark I got and ordered the one you got! I have so many plants to repot and now have to wait for the new bark to arrive. Still drying this coco coir out it's not drying 🙄 by the time it actually dries out I'll be ready to use it again hahaha 😆
Hi! Thank you for the video! I was wondering how you ended up liking the mix? Do you still use the same mix or have you made any changes since then? Thank you! :)
Hey! I have some of this mix leftover (it's AMAZING btw)- I'm wondering if the leftover mix can be amended for cacti? If so, what kind of ratios would you go for? Or...would it make more sense to start from scratch?
Do you use both pumice and orchid bark for cost effectiveness? (i.e. orchid bark being more expensive so it is better not to solely rely on it to make up the aerating component?)
Actually, no! But that's a good bonus. I use both because I like having additives with a variety of moisture retention. For example, some plants' roots really like orchid bark but using exclusively orchid bark as my additive wouldn't add enough aeration.
@@GoodandPlanty Ok lol! Hmm I was thinking maybe I could use a pruning saw/knife that I have but maybe the brick would ruin that haha. Also worried about getting dust everywhere if I did. I'll go for smaller bricks just to be safe for now then!
I repotted me monstera with store bought mix and my leaves are turning yellow. I notice my soil is not draining properly should I repot to something similar to this.

i love the scoop! here is a link to the one i have. I got it in medium: www.etsy.com/listing/708700444/soil-scoops?ref=hp_rv-3

I wanted to know if you can reuse potting mix from a plant that had root rot if you water it with hydrogen peroxide?

@@GoodandPlanty Interesting! Thanks for the explanation, I always wondered why some people use a bajillion aerating ingredients.
Have you cut your coco coir brick since? I'm considering buying a similar sized brick and wondering what method you used to cut chunks off of yours :)
i ended up just soaking all of it in a big plastic storage bin! my pocket knife was not strong enough for that brick lol.

@your overwatered plant thank you for your reply

Is warm gusting is fertilizer ?
Are coco husk and coco chips a moister retaining ingredient or aeration???
similar to orchid bark, they break up the coir/peat and but also retain a bit more moisture than perlite/pumice.
@@GoodandPlanty thank you!
Can I use cocochips/cocohusk instead of orchid bark?
yes! this mix is totally customizable i just like orchid bark.
Are these percentages/ratios by weight or volume?
volume but they’re rough percentages because in reality i eyeball everything!
