    Indexfunds vs active funds
Today we will discuss whether active funds is better or passive funds,
Passive funds is called index funds,
Lets understand what is an index. In any stock exchange, say NSE OR BSE, to understand how the economy or stock market is performing an INDEX will be formed. In NSE there are 6500+ companies listed. But the overall stock market is generally lead or dominated by top 50 to 100companies because of its huge size in market capitalization and business. Because top 100companies contribute to morethan 70 of mkt cap. So in National stock exchange, there is a index called NIFTY 50 in bse its called SENSEX. IT WAS CALLED AS THE BAROMETER OF INDIAN ECONOMY. But there more indexes. Like nifty 100, nifty 500, nifty midcap 150, nifty smallcap 100, bank nifty, nifty pharma. Lets understand what is nifty 50, nse will take stock of top 75companies and they will decide based on the quality on various parameters and choose 50companies to form nifty 50. And they will change the portfolio once in six months. If a particular stock is not doing well, they will remove it from nifty 50 and they will add next performing stock. So only 2times this activity is done . so in a mutual fund, they also have nifty 50 index fund, say sbi nifty 50 index fund. They will invest in all these companies with almost the same percentage. And they will change only once in six months based on this index. That’s why its called passive funds. So what is an active fund, all other funds like, large cap fund, midcap fund or smallcap funds, they portfolio will be managed actively atleast once in a month or whenever it is required.
Now recently some of my investors, asked me pls recommend some index funds, I asked them why index funds? Then he told me anand srinivasan sir told me this. So I also watched his video. Not only him there are few other articles has come positively about index funds and negatives about index funds.
Such discussion is very good because only then we will get clarity.
So first lets understand what is the advantage of index funds,
    1. Say in nifty 50, the top performing companies will have more weightage, say for reliance industries is 14.9%. but in a mutual fund, the fund cant invest morethan 10% in a stock. So the fund will miss the opportunity. the stock price moved from 867 in march to 2369. almost 300% growth. This is a positive view. The logic of investing in mutual fund is only getting higher returns, the objective is reducing the risk. Lets take the same example. In 2009 oct ril wal 537 to in 2017 517. Negative return for 8years. So, in next 1year, if Ril doesn’t perform or if it becomes negative. The first hit will be for index funds. So more weightage is a plus as well as minus.
    2. Advantage for active mutual fund is , in an index fund, the portfolio will be changed only once in six months. But in actively managed funds, it will be done whenever it is required. If there is a problem in a particular company, in an actively managed fund, they can reduce the exposure or sell it fully. But in an index fund. They will do only in janor in july. By that time, the share price of that particular company would have drastically come down.
    3. Next advantage is expense ratio . since it is managed by a fund manage. The fund management charge is there. But when the funds are performing better than index funds. Charges doesn’t matter.
Now lets look at why people are saying this, its because of recent things, last 1year and in the year 2018. Only In 2years out of last 10years the index has beaten the average returns of index.
So let’s see what is there in today’s performance.

According to your presentation in last 10 years among 24 only 9 funds able to beat index Less than 50% funds. How would I know which fund will beat index in next 10 years. It's pot luck 😅 better people can use index with asset allocation and rebalancing to reduce risk in portfolio. And we don't have to worry about other funds outperforming thefund which we choose.

Its better to invest in index funds,
the average return of Nifty 50 is 18% per year, based on last 10 year's data
Ex Nifty bees (follows nifty 50)
26.05.11 price is 55.28 (day high)
    26.05.21 trading at 178.88(day high)
Which is 1.5 % per month.
If you invest 5000 per month for 20 year's on 18% per year (or 1.5 % per month)
    Amount invested: ₹12,00,000
    Interest : ₹1,05,17,436
    Total : ₹1,17,17,436

I accept your words by the same time now there is too much liquidity in international market FII & DII performance is at a rush so I would say until the liquidity becomes stable in international market not just nifty every stock in every country is gonna perform great and in india nifty will be the best.
So for 1 or 2 years index funds would be the best choice.
Don't just see this and take a decision research think and inverst.

    Index Funds:
Most Index funds must be having Adani group stocks holding it without selling even though they have negative news about the Adani group. In active funds fund managers have the flexibility of selling the shares earlier .
When your investment is going down because of a specific stock or more stocks you must simply watch the loss without any action. Such funds are called Index funds.
Now, do you want to invest in index funds ? 😃

Hi Jojo, Nav is inclusive of expense ratio. The performance shown is including expense ratio. In U.S., there are thousands of Mutual fund companies, so most of the schemes cant beat index funds there. But in india, it will take a long time. In india, good number of ACTIVE FUNDS keep on beating index funds. But you should know how to choose a good fund?

      There are two choices,
      1. choose index fund and forget it.
      2. Choose a right advisor and get good funds.
In the first option you will save cost. Second option, you will get better returns but you will have to spend money on advisor. Either commission or direct fee. Choice is yours. When you pay money to an advisor, you have every right to question him.

  • @craigslist1323

Don't listen to this mutual fund sales man.
Most of the mutual funds do not best the indices that they track.
Don't belive the "choose the right fund" nonsense. If an investor knows that, they will rather buy individual stock. Also in the long term (think 20 years) there might be 10% active fund beating its index.
Also expense ratio is a killer in mutual fund.
Just not 80% index, 20% bond.. keep rebalancing every year and increase 1% higher in bond and 1% lesser in stock.
You will best all these nonsense mutual funds. These guys are there just to make money from your money
Listen to the great Warren Buffet (go look at his index vs active challenge).
Only one exception to this rule is small caps.. small caps is where active fund managers can really pick good stocks and multi baggers

    • @nivasexcites
      @nivasexcites  3 роки тому

I never said index fund is bad. Saying only index funds will give good returns is wrong. You can think globally like warren buffet, but you have to ACT locally. In US, there are 8000mutual fund companies in US. So there Mutual fund companies cant beat index funds. But in india, there are less AMC's. And there are quite a no of mutual funds in every category beats index funds.

Dont you think index funds are safe bet for long term investment like 20 or 30 years. Having less expense ratio will make a huge difference. Number of funds beating the market is getting reduced year by year. Even in india its less than 50% funds beats market. If i have 2 funds, chances are one gonna beat market and other gonna fail. Atlast, even though one of our fund beats market, its of no use. As it has to compensate the other funds loss in our portfolio.

    • @nivasexcites
      @nivasexcites  2 роки тому

Your point is valid. But don't put all your money in index funds. Mostly people investing index funds are investing in nifty50 and Nifty next 50. In the last 15years, nifty 50 has not beaten a single midcap fund. I'm talking about index. But index funds have tracking error from 1% to 1.5% per year. Which is equivalent to expense ratio.

Nifty 50 index fund is best to invest for beginners , who don't knw share market fully , less expense ratio, no brokages firms fees. Long term return 10-12% rate .

Investopedia: Limitations of the S&P 500 Index
One of the limitations to the S&P and other indexes that are market-cap weighted arises when stocks in the index become overvalued meaning they rise higher than their fundamentals warrant. If a stock has a heavy weighting in the index while being overvalued, the stock typically inflates the overall value or price of the index.
A rising market cap of a company isn't necessarily indicative of a company's fundamentals, but rather it reflects the stock's increase in value relative to shares outstanding. As a result, equal-weighted indexes have become increasingly popular whereby each company's stock price movements have an equal impact on the index.
