I've done the Slap Accelerator three times and went from 'there's no way I'm gonna get this' to 'double thumb is the only proper way to play bass'. I'm an American expat in the Philippines and I'm 74 years old.
one of these years i’m gonna do it too. waiting to retire. I’ve got about 10hours a day worth of hobbies. The full+ time job doesn’t let me focus too much on any one of them.
@@mwoody4560 Just do a little a few days a week.
Ian is just the cutest. Between the warm vibes he gives off, his dastardly chops, and his enthusiasm, he's indispensable!
South Carolina guitarist who's always watching bass lessons for better recordings. Love your channel. :)
First discovered you when I was looking for a fix to bass playing putting me in excruciating pain. You got me through that and helped me to truly enjoy bass playing. You are the man.
It was too early for me (west coast USA) to join and play with my family sleeping, glad to catch up the replay... Maybe sometime I'll get to join you live
Thanks for this! This is what I’ve been looking for. Best way to teach the slap in full details. Not boring as well.
I'm not remotely interested in slap. It's not something that's ever used in the styles I play. I'm literally just watching this video because I love Scott and Ian's chemistry so much.
Tbh, I can actually see the double thump being useful in my genres (indie rock, alt rock, experimental pop). But it also seems like the hardest technique to master, so I doubt I'll spend months learning it for the off-chance it comes in useful on one song on my album.
Cheers from Tandil, Argentina!!!
Thanks guys, super motivating !
Larry Graham was the inventor of double thumb too! Not enough people acknowledge this! "Release Yourself" title track! 1974! Legit double thumb, he plays this on that old instructional video too!
Hola! From Montevideo, Uruguay
Desert island with Blue DeTiger , wouldn't have time for bass !
I think i'm close after 18 years to playing Hair by GCS correctly... almost... He does play it on the instructional vid so you can see some of the right hand clearly but its actually quite tricky and subtle and his technique, even though he's the OG, is quite advanced and unique. What's slapped and what's popped is somewhat unclear mainly I think because he slaps (sorry.. thumps) very hard and aggressively. Nobody Ive seen yet has convincingly played it correctly (he definitely hits that low G, not a hammer on). He also shifts between D and E on the A string and the Dstring for the first 2 notes. thumps the A and plucks the D. You can hear the difference if you're paying attention. I think he uses more the D pluck especially later but starts with an A string thump. He does pluck the notes that are slid into (G#, high D). but again the aggressiveness might make it unclear. I go back to Hair like once every couple of years and would always find some subtle nuance that I missed or some slight flaw in the way I was playing it. Didn't mean to write a essay but you guys might be the only people who might understand and appreciate this!
My intro to slap was that Louis Johnson VHS you keep clipping, so I've always struggled to unlearn that massive down thumb thing - and yes it has totally limited what I can do. You mentioned in the video the other week that you thought it was just an improv riff, but the VHS actually came with a ring bound workbook... Well, probably still an improv, but transcribed. That said, it was exciting to try but not at all something simple that a beginner could learn as a spring card to their own playing
Listening from melbourne the next morning ! Sorry Dude had a few drinks with mates last night!
Love the pod cast . But dam i wish it was at a later time for us working stiff watch it live.. in the Eastern time zone..
Yow ,great things uu and team doing,fr jamaics
Crazy Teachers :) ! Thank You
Get Bill Gould on! He’s all about serving the song and not being flashy but is obviously a slap-rock beast. Pleeeeeaase! He seems like a friendly chap and loves bass chats. Have I said please?
Hey, slap blokes, with regards to the mechanics of slap on the instrument side - against which fret a string (is supposed to) bounce to create the slap sound? Is it bouncing near the nut (/fretted one), or at the last fret (e.g. 20nd/24th)? Setting up a 'problematic' bass. Raising action, leveled/crowened dead frets, still buzz on 1-5th frets. Please let me know. P.S. Ian is the main asset of this show, simply stellar, simply the best. Also: Flat. Victor.
The string strikes the fret at the end of the neck nearest the bridge, they shouldn't be hitting near the nut. Check that your neck has enough relief, it's possible that the truss rod needs adjusting!
@@devinebass added relief, lowered the bridge - nearly perfect! Thank you heartily!
Slap-happy from Saint Louis.
Me at work today: "With how bad my body's aching, I should not practice slap bass tonight."
*Gets home from work. Video recommendation: Hour long SBL video about slapping bass.
I am doing better, by the way.
IAN!! LOVE the new color on the IMA4!! I have been in constant contact with Spencer, and I'm hoping I can pick up one of the new IMA4's when they are released in the next run. You guys have created a Magical instrument! Can't wait to get my hands on one.
Just curious... What strings have you found to be the best for that bass? I have used DR High Beams for decades, now. I am a retired professional bassist from Nashville. I'm living the Beach Life in Panama City Beach, FL. But, I still perform 3-4 nights a week. Please let me know. Thanks man!

I was right now years old when I realized my left hand slap is my best slap. I’m actually killer at it… pok-et-e-pok-et-e-pok-et-e-pok-et-e-pok-et-e-pok-et-e-pok-et-e-pok-et-e-pok-et-e-pok-et-e-pok-et-e-pok-et-e-pok-et-e-pok-et-e-

Cylinder thumbnail 👍🏼 here
Hey Ian! Would those polished Olinto rounds be choice on a fretless? Been using Olinto flats and miss some growl here and there.
Hi guys
So for double thumb I don't touch the fret board much...
I find it easier to pop with my middle finger.
Is that ok, or is it a bad habit that I should try to change?
Not at all, if that's comfortable for you by all means do it!
@@devinebass Thank you!
Guys if you could up the volume in general would be good
Can’t find those Labella Superpolished strings? (On Ian Bass) Anybody knows where to get them?
Paris , France
My Desert Island Slapper? Stanley Clarke.
Marcus.
Is it normal that I have got an instant blister on my thoumb?
Soreness is normal when you're learning to slap, if it's blistered, give it a few days to heal up and it will form a callus, at which point you'll be good to go.
My thumb is cylinder

Slap bass will also get you thrown out of a guitar center 😂

If anyone is thinking about slapping the bass here are the steps that you should take:
Step 1. Extend your arm.
Step 2. Open the palm of your hand.
Step 3. Slap yourself around the face as hard as you can.
Step 4. Play the bass properly!
So you’re saying not to slap the bass…at all? Period? GTFOH 😂
Slap is highly overrated, imo. Providing a hip rocking groove can be done any way on bass. Other than Primus and RHCP, not a lot of Main-stream bands are known for their slap-playing bassist.
Would not call Primus mainstream though. Also not main stream but Dirty Loops comes to my mind immediately
Chic, Graham Central Station, The Brothers Johnson, SOS Band, Teena Marie, Maxwell, Jamiroquai, Parliament Funkadelic, Rage Against The Machine, Korn, Level 42, Slave, Con Funk Shun, The Dazz Band, The Bar Kays, The Time, Klymaxx, MTume, Skyy, Shakatak, Maze and Frankie Beverly, Lakeside
@@ChristianBurrola You are missing the point of mainstream word. All that bands are amazing but not mainstream. Korn is probably most lol
Its often over-emphasized in bass-education maybe, but slap is cool! Check out the ending on Lady in my life for subtle erotic juice, or the bridge on PYT. Used subtle here and there can give the song a little bit extra.
@@Mike-er2ih tons of chart topping songs by these very artists have tons of slap bass in them.
