I’ve never lived inside of a big city. I like my small town. But, I’d like it more if I could own some land that’s close to the town but not too close. If I need to get into town to get groceries or something but far enough away to let my children play outside without fear of them being hit by cars or being kidnapped by the local sex offenders.

I'm a long way from a young man Bjorn but I believe your videos help all ages of people. You have inspired me to build a shelter in my woods if nothing more than to make my coffee by a small fire or just listen to the sounds of the woods and the quiet. I do go into the woods, away from my house which is in the woods but where I can see only Nature. I need to rebuild my sweat lodge and there has been one here over 25 years. The next lodge I want to build of stones from this land. This path of ground I am steward of is part of hundreds of acres with a beautiful creek with small water falls, lots of aquatic life and trout. There are deer, foxes, coyotes, Racoons, opossums and skunks. Even some minks and muskrats along the creek. There are large rocks as well and many small ones. It is hilly so so,e lovely contours and in winter, you can see far in the woods. So you have inspired me and I am planning a small lean to or a small structure made from this land with the many downed limbs and branches. Just a place to sit in the quiet and be part of the land in Peace. I do Love your videos and Thank You once again for them. We are truly a Human Family of Earth. Love, Light, Peace and good fires! Hello Bjorn. I have been watching your videos for a few weeks now. They are very enjoyable, and I enjoy your calm manner, and appreciation for the outdoors. A lot the bushcraft community on UA-cam is participating in a challenge started by Haze Outdoors called "Show us your steak". The focus is to get outside, get yourself a nice steak, cook it over an open fire, and speak of any experience you or ones close to you who have suffered from men's mental health issues, and to share advice and resources available for those struggling with mental health issues. Helping bring awareness to men's mental health, and lending some helpful words is a great way to let other men watching know, that they are not alone, and people do care. Sometimes men have a hard time speaking or their feelings, or depression. Unfortunately this time of year sees a lot of mental health worsen, and the stress is too much to bare for some men. You and others like you are a great mental retreat for some, even for just a little while during a break at work, and a wonderful platform to reach out to others upon. I encourage you, if you wish, to have a little fire, cook a steak, and share some warm words that may help another. Thank you for all you do, and for all that you're unaware you do. Also. Yes that is an amazing spot. I bet that rock once warmed by the fire, would be very comfortable to sleep on. Thank you again Bjorn.

It's so good that the kids are able to spend school time outside in the woods. There is so much for them to learn and discover out there. Plus after spending time outside like that, they will be tired. I'm sure the parents appreciate that.

do the mini series for sure. I grew up in the woods and moved into a city after i turned 18 for a university education. I go out into the woods and mountains weekly to balance the city life or i get tired out quickly. Many people don't ever go into nature anymore and i think it would benefit everyone if people were able to spend more time in nature and to respect it for the experiences nature can offer.

The sound of rain on your tarp, and the crackle of a robust campfire. Best therapy ever. I say do a few videos about the Norse way of life and men's health. Certainly we all could use some reminders that our modern society is grossly out of touch with reality and a bit of time in the woods is certainly one kind of cure. I always tell people that I find solace and healing on the trail, hiking, and also when I'm out in the woods sitting still and just... listening to the rain, and the crackle of my fire.

Loved this: the dead-air moments speak almost as loudly as the vocal content. The total lack of agenda other than need to establish life-supporting basics - warmth, shelter, food - at own pace instantly invoke a sense of well-being and calm. You may not know it but you're a natural in front of camera and true inspiration. Thank you and please, keep them coming.

I saw you in my suggestions once last month, and I haven't looked back. I immediately saved the series you've done so much of (thanks to all those to told you to do it a year ago), and subscribed. This is how I end my days now, by watching one of your fireside conversations. Ironically there's not much that goes on visually with you sitting in the same place in what's basically a set, but the sight of a campfire and someone speaking draws me in. I've never had a good male role model in my life, but I'll sit down for 10-20 odd minutes and try heeding every word. It's like a fatherly conversation. That might sound odd to describe it as such, but there's certainly a part of society that's lacking that sort of masculine order to set our lives right- and many of us seeking it out consciously or not. Thank you, for speaking up, and sharing your way of life. You are an inspiration.

That knife, your favorite Bjorn is a beautiful piece of art, ancient art at that. The ancient wood handle makes it very specials with frequencies of the past still in use. I make Native type flutes and often use old wood. I made a number of them with some white pine that was cut into boards back in the 1700s. The sound is mellow and special. That tree was hundreds of years old when cut into boards so that ancient tree still has a voice. Just like your knife handle, still has a voice. And what you say about civilization, too civilized indeed. So civilized that it has cut itself off from Nature and they forgot that they are Nature. When you don't or can't get into natural places, you loose an important part of yourself. And as far as what type of videos you do? I like all of them, no matter what you chose to video I like them all. I Thank You Very Much! Just watching is connecting to Nature. As soon as I can I am building a small shelter with a fire circle so I can go out and have my coffee and just take everything in. A Very Happy New Year to You and your Family with Love, Light and Peace! DaveyJO in Pennsylvania

Thank you for sharing your time in the woods with us. I reckon the further we get from nature, and the more "civilised" we become, that our experiences, our lives, our connections with others, and our very souls become greatly diminished. The world needs as many fireside chats as it can get! Please consider doing the mini series.

Hello mate. I found your channel this evening after watching one of the latest MAPS videos and at the end, yours and around a dozen videos came on the screen. Dont get me wrong here when I say that I love the outdoors, but it has become almost "fashionable" and I honestly believe there are a lot of people who have gotten into it for egotistical reasons. Maybe they want more views on their channel or whatever, I dont know. But in the last few years I lost interest in watching videos about bushcraft etc. Anyway, I saw the still photo with your video and it intrigued me to the point of me hovering the cursor over the still to get the title. When I saw "Men's mental health" mentioned, I had to come watch it. Without going into a long story, I have always lived by the sea. I spent 5 years living just outside London and during that time my mental health went from iffy to bad to worse. I came back to my sleepy little seaside village and slowly things got back to normal for me. Sure, there were lots of visits to my GP, shrink and counsellors and they all helped. But ever since, it is a subject I have felt very close to. Now, combine that with being out in nature and to me you have a recipe for success and the potential to help people in ways beyond just teaching them how to do this or that with a knife and a piece of wood. Listening to you mentioning the Norse way of life and belief system potentially helping people find and retain the peace and "happiness" so many people (men and women) are lacking in their lives today was enough for me to want to see more. As such I really hope that you do follow through with some videos on these lines. Whether they be a camp fireside chat or ones at home. I for one would be really keen on watching them! As such, after just one video, I have decided to subscribe and tomorrow I shall begin catching up with your video history.
The "civilised" bit you were struggling with... I wonder if it is similar to how I how think of it? The civilised world today seems to be very much as you will find in the big towns and cities. Where people keep themselves to themselves. Rarely care much about their neighbours and fellow towns people. As opposed to say just 50 years ago, when most people were fairly close to their neighbours etc. If one was ill, the others pitched in and helped where they could. Be that picking the kids up from school etc or maybe getting their shopping and helping them in any ways they could.
To me, the loneliest places in the world now are the big towns and cities where everyone wants to be annonymous from everyone else outside of their immediate group of friends and family. Maybe not even as many people as that.
Also, I think that many of the mental health issues many of us face today are because our lives revolve around money, concrete, brick walls and the tendency to lock out the world and keep ourselves to ourselves. If we listen to mainstream science, our species (homo sapien) is around 200,000 years old. Yet the rate of change that the last 100 years or so has seen has had the hidden problem of us not being entirely ready for it. If we were completely ready, then there would only be a handful of people who like to get out in the wild and feel free. Even if only for a few short hours each week. I think that "need" is within most of us still and it works against so called modern civilisation, which in turn slowly works against how we try to live our daily lives. Just a theory.

I understand that it is a good place to camp. Evolution has left many traces in us. You are protected with the cliff behind you and the tarp gives you a feeling of protection from above. Architect Ralph Erskin designed the campus of Stockholm University. Among other things, he made small niches with low ceilings and a few meters depth where students could sit and study. They became very popular, because any threats could only come from one direction. We have a lot of caveman in us.

Regarding therapy in this series, I am sure you have heard of “nature-deficit disorder” - it is a natural subject matter for you. The Japanese have developed what they call “shinrin- yoku” which most easily translates to “forest bathing”. In the U.S. now there is a therapist certification for “forest therapy”. In the past I have worked with a wilderness survival therapy program which took young men out of youth authority institutions where they were incarcerated into wilderness for 30 days and, during that time, each participant spent 3 days alone with no food. The need is definitely there and so is the solution.

Thanks Bjorn, another great video. Just what i needed to get back to nature and a calm place of tranquility and peace. I used to camp and trek a lot as a boy, now i have to many battle scars and war wounds from life's little things that happen (motor vehicle accidents mainly) to do this. I enjoy your outings and the time you take to make videos.

Its interesting to reflect what the unnatural living in modern society does to humans mental health. I think it makes us unhappy and in many cases even mentally sick because we need to be part of nature and need to feed our instinct to develop and be our real self's just like all other animals do.

Spot on Evert. I had a father who had a strong connection with nature and animals. He taught me skills and compassion for nature and at 61 years I wish I could relay his message to another generation. Skol brother.

I’m really enjoying your videos Bjorn especially at the very end of 2020. When I was a young kid I used to love to play in the woods. Everyday my cousins and I would always find something to build/destroy our in the woods. As an adult, I’ve forgotten what it feels like to enjoy nature as I did when I was young. I could blame work or household chores or simply raising my family but, no it’s my own fault for not making time to go exploring my wooded area. Thanks for reminding me I need to go do that.

I really fell in love with nature due to the military of all things. Before my service I needed to get in shape, so I started hiking since it seemed like the best way to prepare, and then in the military I absolutely loved living in a camp in a forest, not having a care in the world apart from the occasional orders to move to some other place. The contrast with our stressful and hectic world is insane. To think our ancestors got to live in the shade of trees, walking around the beautiful land hunting, gathering berries, fishing or just exploring without anything else getting in the way...
Some day when I have kids, I'm going to take them camping every chance I get and teach them about plants, trees, edible berries and mushrooms and animals. Maybe I'll dust up on my history knowledge and study up on mythology a bit first though so I'll have some educational stories for them to boot.
Edit: I also think some sort of educational series about the Norse way of life would be a nice idea. I think a lot of the problems that young men specifically have is partially caused by the fact that they don't really have a strong identity, like they're a bit disconnected from their own culture in a sense and it can cause people to feel a bit lost in this more global society we have these days.

I agree with the previous comment. Do the series! I feel as well that we’ve lost our connections with nature. That this generation coming up may be devoid of the understanding that comes from spending time in the woods and how pre-Christian humans were completely integrated with nature.

Hello Bjorn, yes I do think it would be a good idea but I think it goes more towards self-reliance than anything else. The Viking lifestyle to me is just that, being self-reliant and being able to handle any situation you may encounter. It is not giving up but finding different ways to do things. I know you don't hunt but maybe you like to fish? Maybe you could show us a traditional way or some other way to catch fish and prepare the fish and cook it in the campfire. I need to get out more (outdoors) and do manly things, that's what a Viking would do!

I am probably one of your older subscribers (69 years), and I too enjoy my time in the woods, and forests (hard wood, maple, oak, etc.), here in the Mid-Western area of the U.S.,... I think that your idea of a "Fireside chat", would be an excellent idea, and approach for help, for so many young men, and women,... Our modern society, as you have mentioned does through more stress on the youth world wide, and the compression, and the demand of that society seems to be the down fall for so many of those youths,... Our young people need to learn to decompress, and reboot, back to a starting point, and rid themselves of that frustrating, bothersome demand of our over crowded modern society,...
Again I say that I like your ideas, and that I only wish that I could help,... If you are ever in the states, and wish to experience the area that I reside, as they say, "Look me up", and I would be more that happy to make it so,...
