A nuanced overview of why people might think maps are racist is very European. Actually thinking that maps are racist is very American, lol.

And those people should realise that modern civilisations started in Europe, democracy came with it, and much more, probably the most important continent in human history, so if some things seem to be focused around Europe, that's why.

@@Mikebigmike94 Actually, it started in the middle east. There were also some advanced civilizations in the pre-Columbus new world. They were cut off and evolving independently but still had some sophistication. It's just recency bias that makes you think that Europe is somehow superior. Things can and do change.

@@theymademepickaname1248 maybe but Democracy as we know it started in Europe. Europe has give the world many things. It’s why a lot of the world population want to live here. Better human rights, better living conditions, less racism, more structured civilisations. The countries the U.K. colonised are doing far better than their neighbours.
We gave the world many many things yet we get bashed all the time for it. I’m proud to be European and what this small continent has achieved.

I really enjoyed this video. I’m from the US and we use the same Europe centric map as the one you had and cut up. I never knew there were upside down maps or Japan centric maps to be honest. Out of curiosity, I looked up if there was a US centric map and apparently there is. I have never seen it used here though. Personally I would never use the US centric map regularly because cutting Asia in half instead of the Pacific Ocean doesn’t make much sense to me, but I definitely see the flaws and issues with each map. I personally don’t feel like the Mercator map (or any other shown) is racist though. I think the makers did the best they could to turn a sphere into a flat map given the purpose of that map at the time and the likely perspective of the people it was intended for at the time of its creation.

Me gusta mucho tu contenido.

Europeans made the map and put northern Africa in the center, not Europe. It just seems to make sense. We all came from Africa and putting Africa in the center minimizes the Pacifico ocean by dividing it in half. Even with the admitted distortions, it just seems to be the most logical approach geographically.
