Ive wanted to know for a while whether Steve and Robin know what those say before the video goes live, or do they have to wait and watch the episode to find out?
For the screw organization, I would suggest replacing your individual bins with ziplock bags. That would save the space, but still have it organized. I do this with electronic components a lot, have a label on each bag, and put a bunch of similar components into a box together.
Or one of those plastic organizer trays. Easy enough to just stuff in the back of a cabinet and you have all your fasteners organized and in one place.
Steve, the cutting boards you are using are fine; They are made of high density polyethylene (HDPE) and are a great outdoor material. From google: "One of HDPE's standout features is its RESISTANCE TO UV RADIATION. While prolonged exposure to sunlight can degrade many materials, HDPE remains steadfast. This property makes it an ideal candidate for outdoor applications, ranging from playground equipment to piping systems exposed to the elements." End Quote. You can protect them further from UV by painting them black a few coats then white a few coats. I have boats of my own and I love this stuff!! It's tough, flexible, and easy to work with. Read up on it and you'll see.
Unfortunately this is not exactly true. Without secondary UV stabilizers the boards will suffer degradation. Typically that is in the form of 2% carbon black. The is why all the commercial HDPE pipe is black not natural in color. This adds to the cost but is required by code. And yes I’ve been a working engineer in the plastic field for over 40 years.
Dear Sailing Arabella couple. 👍👌👏 You two look just great together and complement each other so incredibly well. I absolutely loved to see and hear how exited Robin got while finding the whelk eggs and casings on the beach. I've never heard of anything like that before and instantly guggled it. Extremely interesting stuff. 3) Robin, you are a very, very well trained beautiful person. Fortunately you nevertheless have a cute/sweet face. Oftentimes humans doing a lot of sports become a "different" face from all the heavy physical efforts. 4) Of course does Steve have a lot of endurance power. How else could he have built a boat in his backyard for years. 5) How much was Akiva able to pull? 😁 ;-) Akiva is such a great calm dog. 💚
We have watched from the beginning. Weteared 😂 up when Arabella splashed. And now we empathize as you help your Mom through her medical tribulations, and wish for her and you all the best possible outcome.
Watching you together for a while I have to say that you two are a match made in heaven. Thank you for sharing your journey through life together and letting us all know what is possible if we put our mind to it. Thank you
I love how Akiva knows how to give himself a bath. Smart dog. You got it made. A good boat, a good dog and a great wife that shares your passion for life.
@ 20:35 Lay a hand towel out on the surface first and then pour your random fasteners on it. Find what you need, then pick up the towel and use it as a funnel to pour the remaining fasteners back into their container. A little trick I learned from Dad. Works great!
I used to live in Polperro, and I have stood on the Mayflower Steps, and although I now live in Canada I travelled to Granby for the last Open House and the next year the launch in Mattapoisett. That gave me the opportunity to visit Plymouth, Massachusetts (just up the road) and see Plymouth Rock and Mayflower II replica. A wonderful memory!
Steve for permanent screw storage a plano 3200 or 2800 tackle tray works great and you can set the bin size to your desired size. That would save you a ton of space.
Takes me back to my navy days where daily polishing of brass fittings became a pain in the butt - did not take long before said fittings received a coat of paint 🙂
A storage solution for your hardware could be some of those clear plastic tackle boxes. Customizable internal compartments and it would be a lot easier than digging through a coffee can. Good luck Steve.
It is definitely a bonus skill to be able to craft eye splices in double-braid rope. No more "hey, my good friend marlinspike magic expert, can you puh-leeze make me a splice." After my promotion into the office and out of the boatyard, there were always some marina projects that I reserved to myself, and splices were high on that list.
For fastener organisation I would recommend small envelopes/baggies together in an appropriate sized container so they take up a lot less space but don't get mixed up
Forgot to mention in my last comment that you can get very large and thicker cutting boards from restaurant supply stores on the cheap compared to "Starboard" sold at West Marine. Because they are color-coded for different cutting applications; ie meat, fish, chicken, and veggies there are a few different colors like red, green, white, and yellow.
Those will probably be the last cutting boards mounted on the boat! Steve will make something more permanent with wood and paint as soon as the need arises.
@@AcornToArabella They might be the last cutting boards serving as radar mounts, but as we say here in Germany: "There is nothing lasting as long as something set up as a temporary solution." In our case it were some boards on top of a dishwasher to hold the counterboard level. It should only serve as it for about a week. In the end it were seven years, and it ended just because we moved out into our new house.
Small zip-lock bags for screws...mark the bags with permanent marker...or toss the labels in the bags....keeps them separated and takes up WAY less room.
*- Steve: Thank You for addressing our curiosity/concerns about the UV resistance of the plastic cutting boards used {temporarily} for the Navigation Gear. **13:34* *- And addressing our concerns that the Hatches got Hold Downs, too. **16:00*
Endurance is something I've noticed comes with working a trade, there are other ways to get it, but with trade work endurance is just one of those things you gain and don't lose easily. There are old out of shape looking workers in the trades that surprise you when you're in your twenties and finally in your thirties you start to understand, you hold on no matter what. You could install one of these workers and they would still be there a hundred years later.
I was surprised by the talk of replacing the cutting board with painted wood. HDPE is used for park benches now because it lasts better than painted wood...
Your cutting board mounts will last for years. I did the same thing as a temporary mount my solar vent on my foredeck. It has a camber and the vent needed to be mounted to a flat surface. I bought a cheap plastic cutting board and used a belt sander to grind the bottom surface to match the camber of the deck. It does not look the best any more with some UV damage that makes it look yellow but given that I did that in 1998 and it is still there even though the fan has been replaced 3 times indicates that yours will last until you WANT to replace it.
Hey Steve don't just dump then in a container all together just use zip-lock bags and write what type size etc on it much easier and saves a ton of space
Are you confident the cutting board will last in the UV long enough or is there doubt? If there is doubt could you use a bit of chain or rope as a lifeline to the gear so if the board cracks you just have a bit of gear hanging from a rope.
I own the same truck as you Steve, it's a good truck eh! Very dependable and reliable. I use to own Fords for years until I got a Toyota I never go back to a Ford again. Although I did like my 95 Ford F150 which was my last Ford, til the motor blew on me, but like I said my Toyota has been super reliable and dependable strong little Truck.
Don't just 'dump the screws into a box of small and large screws'. I imagine the USA has 'ziplock bags' plastic sandwich bags with a reusable seal. Also usually has a white patch you can write on.
Robin, if you (or anyone in the comments) can tell me what that " little piece of magic during a trip to the beach" that you found. I live on the West coast, in San Diego, right on the beach all my life and had never seen what you pulled out of the sand (and the wind was just loud enough. where I couldn't hear what you called it, if you did). Please, somebody tell me so I can look it up on the internet and find out more about it!!!!!
That would be a Whelk Egg Case. It has lots of fun names on east coast, "mermaids necklace" is a good one. Each strand can have 200 eggs in it. Whelks are sea snails.
@@AcornToArabella Thanks, it goes to show ya that even a 73 year old can learn new things. I also found out that the reason I have never seen them here in San Diego is they seem to be only in the Gulf and Atlantic states in the USA.
I can’t think of too many climbing situations where you be on a “crimper” hold and not utilize your thumb to reinforce your index and middle fingers. I’m sure this would add at least another 50lbs. to your hang test.
I would think you would want to do more reps at lower weights for better endurance, rather than trying to build muscle mass. Bigger muscles demand more fuel than smaller ones.
Always funny to here the phrase Western Mass. Regional lingo that separates the two east-west tribes. Thank god for the Worcester buffer. 😂 Without it bad things could ensue.
So far, the pumps have been fine. The vacuum gets most of it, and Steve tries to be on top of the fuzz. Fur hair dander wood chips metal shavings, it never ends.
WTH is Moat "Czech" pilsner? I'd bet it doesn't taste like a Czech beer at all. I know, Czechia is a landlocked country, so you probably won't get there, but the beer there…

Why don't we see the women who helped with all kind of work on Arabella forr a long time? Suddenly she disappear from the videos - for a long time we have not seen her....😞
Because he would run off and not come back for 2 days. Plus, for the Cape Cod beaches here, its usually posted to leash your dog. On a deserted island? Different story.
Is it just me, or does anybody else look forward to Ben's titles above Steve and Robin's names at the end credits?
You are not alone!!
I think it's about time Ben had a fun title too during the credits. "Don't you wonder sometimes 'bout sound and vision?" Keep up the great work Ben!!
Ive wanted to know for a while whether Steve and Robin know what those say before the video goes live, or do they have to wait and watch the episode to find out?
Yeah - I really like Ben’s creativity!
Yep

Sharp, pointy things like wood screws, nails etc. always poke through the mentioned plastic bags.
Best regards, luck and health in particular.
The chopping board was a stroke of genius and it will last for ages.
Imagine if Steve had made the whole boat out of that stuff? No rot, ever! (Yeah, I know, that's blasphemy...)

Lovely.
From a fellow boat dweller, it was an awful wet winter here in the UK as well.
The weather has been rainy for the last half of every week on the Cape for what seems like forever. Glad to see you enjoying the time here.
Brilliant idea walking Akiva through the "creek" after his trek through the seaweed sludge.

If then cutting boards are made out of polypropylene or polyethylene they should last forever.
How much for the bottle opener?
