Your doing the lords work Josh. I have most of the go to drum libraries. This one SMASHES them all. It makes me so excited to write with. Thanks again Josh.
Say what you want about the songs (I think they're awesome for the most part), but the production on the Black Album kicks ass. It's definitely of its time, but sounds huge in a very transitional 80s-to-90s way.
This is rad, I would have liked a bit more of a walkthrough on bass and 2 buss though. Even just a quick look at what each plugin is doing. Definitely going to pick up these drums soon.
At some point, I think it would be really interesting to see how you'd approach recording either St Anger or Frantic. There are some cool riffs in there.
This is such a great idea, showing how versatile the drum library is. I’d love for you to try to get Refused’s The Shape Of Punk To Come drum sound. It’s more of an organic drum sound yet still punchy
Definitely no question it was a Marshall BV cab…57/421 combo…I’ll be honest your 57/421 mix EQ IR on the Marshall cab is pretty fucking dead on for this tone man, should’ve just sticked with that IR in my opinion. 1.2k was the cut for sure like you nailed as well. There’s a lot more room in that tone than anything today which I’m sure you are aware of as well: I believe for that they used a U67 about 20 feet off the cab aimed right at the center of the cab, this was James’s tent setup everyone refers to. Also mark Lewis did a killer cover of sad but true with the band the kingsmen that’s worth checking out if you haven’t. He used his ref F for it as well unboosted I believe with all era spec gear for it as well, turned out pretty amazing.
Metallica used mesa mark ivs, mesa studio preamps, jc 120s, and ada mp1s and blended them with bob rock's modded marshall and used 1936bv cabs with marshall vintage speakers, the predecessor to the v30. You can get these speakers and a more mesa dimension cab if you get the marshall mode four mf280 cabs from the 90s. Aphex parametric eqs were known to be a secret weapon in the studio in the FX loop since master of puppets. They also used kick and snare samples on this record so that is why your drums sound a bit different, no one shot samples.
I've always been confused about sticking a guitar dead centre, for example if the L/R guitars are playing a harmony then how do you decide what side the centre guitar is going to replicate?
Yeah it’s a good question. I don’t like doing a centre guitar for that reason. I guess you’d go with the “original” or lower part of the riff and not the harmony in most cases
Guitar tone sounds about 80 % correct. But the drums sounds way off. Doesn't have that clicky metallic punchy sharp sound the snare has with that big reverb and the kick lacks clickiness. The toms sounds prett much on par.
Mixing aside, it's admirable how consistent those quad tracks sound.
+100 that's the real secret to Josh's amazing guitar tone. Insanely tight playing.
This was awesome man, everything sounded bang on 👌🏻
So glad you did this song and not the usually sad but true/enter sandman

Thank you very much! That's how I feel about it too!

seriously, man, that's dead on. First metal album was the Black album for me, bought it in 91. It's still an amazing record.

Black Album's production is so incredibly high quality it's practically timeless
A Nevermore/Loomis Tone recreation would be good. Especially Dead Heart in a Dead World.
Josh, I need to say that your drum library is THE BEST ONE in the market right now. Congrats on your amazing job
Thank you! I’m stoked you think so.
This is amazing 🎉 What we can do now, just in our bedrooms. It would be awesome if you Josh even added your vocals to this mix 😮
When you pushed the brightness up a bunch on the kit at around min 8:30 and I heard the result, immediate joy.
*nirvana- nevermind Full Mix Recreation please!*
Love the STL Tones plugin! With the Mesa, you can also get SUPER close to the Load sound, which I really love.
This is rad, I would have liked a bit more of a walkthrough on bass and 2 buss though. Even just a quick look at what each plugin is doing. Definitely going to pick up these drums soon.
Ah man, I'm bummed you didn't cover the eurobass processing :(
Guitars are very much near to spot on. Great Work

Love everything you put out Josh ❤🔥
Awesome that the Through the Never was used as an example track for this one 🤘
That's sick, actually that made me revisit the black album and how great it still sounds.
Sepultura Arise! Next mix video! 🤘
God damn man I love your tones! I laughed out loud when I heard the pull offs/hammer ons 😂 nailed the Metallica tone.

Awesome 🤘 'Revolution is my name' next?
that sounds really good. thanks for showing how you mix it.
Yeeeep "Through The Never" has gotta be the absolute best song off the Black Album. It rips!
Truly amazing. Will look into buying that drumkit!!! Wish it had a demo/taster version, but no problem

Was definitely waiting for a black album rendition from you Josh, sounds great!
Sounds great

WOW good work dude sounds amazing!
This is just nuts! Very nice!
Really great tone.Good job🤘🔥
Would be awesome if you did Death - Symbolic recreation
Ola would be proud
I would say take my money but you've already got it 😂. This is SO sick 👏
Fantastic as always man!!!
Would be great to having your Guitar DI Files for playing around with good tone.
They’re get posted to my patreon
If you separate the bass track on sad but true you can hear the baritone that james used
Can you do a full mix recreation video for a Dimmu Borgir song?? That would be so epic!!
Big EPICNESS
Tried out the same settings but just used the eq in the plug in. Still sounds pretty tight, do a justice one next? 😂
Yes
your channel is epic
Kickass
Doing a side by side comparison, this is a much darker mix.
You got my attantion, sir - let me grab my phones :D
Wat else you got on there for post processing ? Just eq? Sounds boosted and brighter
Metallica's new guitarrist, ladies and gentleman.
Killer! 🤘🏻

I swear to god I can hear James' vocals buried in there xD
Fuck yeah
Now, Master of Puppets recreation 🤪
Jesus, dude! That's REALLY close. Like, you could tell me it's an instrumental mix of the original recording and I'd probably believe you close.
Groove packs
Coming!
Good thing he used the thrashiest song on the album.
I think the way you did it with the quad tracked on the sides and the one in the middle is right thats how they get that chorusy type sound
