My Protestant great great great great grandfather was a proud Irishman who was exported by the English as an Irish rebel in 1820. 203 years later I am as proud to be Irish as he was despite not having been to Ireland.

Protestant or catholic that does not matter these men died for Ireland. They fought against the crown and died defending the values of the Irish Republican movement. May we never forget no matter affiliation when one dies to defend the oppressed they die heroes of the oppressed of every nation

As Wolfe Tone and the Proclamation of 1916 were quite clear on, Ireland for Catholic, Protestant and dissenter. The orange, white and the green.

the orange, white and green flag was later -- 1848. In the time of the United Irish, the Orange Order was founded deliberately to undermine all unity between Catholic, Protestant and Dissenter (Presbyterian and other Protestant sects).

Unfortunately the new free-state elite (the forerunners of FF and FG) found it easier to use Catholicism to give legitimacy to their robbing blind of the Irish people to enrich themselves. That's why the free-state turned into a priest-ridden hellhole that lasted until the mid eighties.

My ancestors were Ulster Protestants that settled in Pennsylvania in the mid-18th century. One of them joined the British military and defended a frontier fort during the French and Indian War, but later supported the American Revolution by serving several years as the commissary to the Continental Army, a complicated, difficult, and dangerous job under miserable conditions.

I'm also of Ulster protestant ancestors... From Antrim and Down... Many americans have this ancestors... known as Scotch irish in the USA... I'm from the fulton line of Lisburn (where also Henry Fulton an united irishman born who probably is a cousin),,, It's strange to say Ulster Scots fought alongside catholics and after became pro loyalists

@@TheGabriel12341 Because the average Ulster-Scot had his own reasons for supporting the United Irishmen, they were barred from power sharing by the Anglican establishment. The leaders of UI were just liberals who supported and inspired by left wing radicals of the French revolution like the Jacobins. This all started to fall apart as expected when they got crushed by the British army and sectarianism started arising among the ranks.

Yes, the Orange Order was deliberately set up to undermine the United Irishmen and played a big part in the repression after the Rising, which drove a lot of Presbyterians to emigrate to the US and Canada

@Never Unprepared also to love your neighbour as yourself is the greatest commandment, the 7 deadly sins are a extra-biblical development and therefore prioritising them over the word of God is not living your bible, it's being a selfish contrarian

This history of Irish nationalism is why, during Oscar Wilde's visit to the US IN 1882, he went to visit Jefferson Davis, to talk about the "lost cause" of the Confederacy. His parents were Irish Protestant Nationalists, so for them, their own nation's "lost cause" was an extremely important topic of conversation.

they were nothing the same though, the south never had any real claim prior Ireland did, the south was fighting for slavery not freedom, Ireland was fighting to free themselves from slavery.

@@fkboyStalin Yes, exactly, and in my opinion that might be a reason why Jeff Davis did not have that conversation with Wilde, claiming to have a headache and leaving the dinner table. Davis's wife and daughter stayed, and the talk was of literature instead of politics.

Majority formally Catholic but largely non-practicing except for ceremonies of Baptism, First Communion and Confirmation. Also wedding. The Catholic Church controls most education in the Irish State and gives Catholics first choice of place for their kids, which gives the Church the means to enforce compliance, at least formally. If the Church lost control of education I think you'd see a further drop in even ceremonial observance and already the churches are fairly empty on Sundays.
In addition there are Protestants (various sects), atheists, agnostics, Jews, Muslims, Hindus ....
Education should be state-staffed and managed and secular, with education about different religious beliefs as part of the general curriculum.
