      @C.D. Wolf, et al, the Vauxhall Chevette is actually a respectable rally car and it is also not a bad tuner, drifter, or track car if it is configured right, and ditto for its American cousins, which are the Chevrolet Chevette and the Pontiac T-1000. I have even seen some people put LS swaps, and heavy modifications, to a Chevrolet Chevette and made it into a surprisingly good muscle car as well. What is to say that the Vauxhall Chevette and Pontiac T-1000 could not also be altered that way as well themselves?

    My first car was a Chevette hatchback, I loved it, bought it off a neighbour for 70 quid in 1987. I think it was a 1.3L bit boy it was nippy. The neighbour was a diesel fitter but had the best looking Pontiac Firebird ever, I think he may have done some tinkering... :)

Why Vauxhall gave this little car the 'front end' it did defies understanding... the Firenza or Kadette or even the Viva front end would finish this car off so much for the better. spiritual successor to the crossflow and 2000E swaps from the 80s, nice. Kadett C GTE axles are beefy like mini Manta axles, I forget which other models had the big stuff, mainly found in Germany.

    • @garethdavies3220
      @garethdavies3220 4 роки тому +1

      Manta A series was the common swap, for a perfect fit spring / axle brackets needed relocating outwards about 20 mm per side. Manta B or Cavalier axle casings could be narrowed as well ,and use A series Manta halfshafts. Ford English axle diff pinion flanges also straight swap for the horrible u bolt propshaft joint on the front of the torque tube, makes for a better propshaft. Also for front brakes Volvo 240 four pot calipers are an easy fit on the front stub axles with possibly Opel Rekord vented discs.

    Great to see an old Chevette in fantastic condition. I don’t much care for Vauxhall or Fords, but this car is like some of the 70s music that I used to hate. It offers me a link back to being a teenager in the 70s and helps me remember my youth. The compilation albums have songs by The Jam and SLF, both of which I hated. Now, I confess to singing along, as I remember what I was doing and which of my girlfriends I was going out with! It’s also great to see you guys taking your time and working hard to bring the Chevette back to life.

    Matt there are aftermarket coolant distribution/stat housings available off the shelf for the zetec rwd conversions. The standard axle will either shatter the diff like a boiled sweet or a halfshaft will make a bid for freedom, taking the wheel,drum and hub with it,ask me how I know😀. I don't hold much regard for those MT75's either, tbh.
    I used a Capri axle on my Chevette with a 3.7-ish ratio but V6's come with a 3:09 and after 1983,lsd equipped. The axle in my actual Capri,a quaife ATB with factory standard bearings,crown wheel and pinion and shafts has taken some serious stick since I built it in 1997,firstly from a na 4.0 TVR V8,through some nitrous 4.3 BV to the current 5.2 stroker with probably 6 times the torque of that Zetec,so it will last and then some.If I recall some Jags have a 2:1 diff if you really want to cruise!

    Not the first time I've seen a Ford transplant in a Chevette. Way back in 1987 when I had a 79 Chevette L saloon (same colour as yours, China Blue), I knew a mechanic who had put a 2 Litre Ford Pinto OHC 'crossflow' engine with two Weber 40 DCOE sidedraught Carbs coupled to an Opel Manta gearbox, suspension setup, brakes and back axle. The whole car was lowered a couple of inches, man that thing was fast.

      I had a 1986 chevette with a 5 spd back in the early 90's I had it hot rodded up I took the head off and ported it and ported the intake and had the car for about a year I loved pulling the e brake and sliding around corners and doing donuts in the car anyway I was racing my friends Toyota Celica at the time and over revved the engine and spun a bearing I drove it around for about a week showing it no mercy and the day it let go I was pulling into my driveway when it let go spitting oil and parts of the block and connecting rod out onto my driveway LOL! it was a good little car anyway found another engine for it and sold it after.

Bought new sills for my NZ Chevette whe I was back in the UK in 2018. Though about trying to take them on the plane as ‘skis’. chopped them in three, flat packed them and stuck in the suitcase from my flight back to NZ. Just collecting parts for a Toyota 3sge conversion.

      well if the original builder used 95+ connectors then they're weather pack connectors so they wont get wet. If they connectors are the factory ones from the cars build years then blow them out or wait till they dry done. Every vehicle gets water in the engine bay when it rains sooo....ya

      Worked at a car dealership back in the 70's. There is a specific way to do it if you are gonna start it right away. It doesn't matter much if allowed to dry thoroughly. Man on here said it right, it does rain and stuff gets wet.
