Hi Phil, good review. Not sure if it has convinced me to change from ar2. I know you say you’re not a fan of microfiber rollers but the rota, think it’s the green microstar I find great for ceilings. Been using it for the last couple of years and holds loads and makes painting ceilings a joy. Been using 12” think it’s the longer pile. They do a blue shorter pile. washed it out twice in all that time
Thanks for the heads up Phil, the Brewers rep was excited that they'd got a rival to AR2 but I thought it a bit suspicious they didn't state what the scub rating was or anything. But opacity wise, I find AR2 struggles over dark patches as well.
I bought it to try on a quick rental turnaround. Ceilings were all vinyl silk over Artex, far from white and marked here and there. The coving was oil glossed (!) and had gone very yellow 🤮 Anyway I keyed and primed the coving (1 x Bullseye 123 Plus) then 2 coats of AF1 all over, neat, with a 9” medium pile Albany sleeve, and it looked fantastic. No flashing, didn’t have any issue with orange peel or brush marks, and no more spatter than any other paint 🤷🏻♂️ Also, I got a couple of splodges of the magnolia wall paint on it and it wiped off fine… contract would’ve come off with the mag. 🤷🏻♂️
Great to hear you had same experience as me because reviews like this will put non experienced people off using it and can even put us off using it if we hadn't have used it already and found it totally different with our method... I used a two fussy blokes microfibre and got a great smooth finish and near zero splatter exactly same as other paints as you say... its the type of roller sleeve that makes the huge different.. Ive found the Hamilton microfibre medium sleeve great also for low splatter... I will have to try an albany as they look the same 😁 .
The rep sold it to me and gave me some to trial and I kept it for a large ceiling with a lot of light coming through and it was flashing and banding like a goodan!! Had to revert to the AR2 for the win and it was perfect! Wasn’t impressed, I’ve used it since in an area with less light and it wasn’t as bad. But it didn’t give me much confidence at all!
Hi Phil, brewers said they use 15litre buckets so it can be thinned for spraying. Took 5 minutes to get the lid off this morning with sore fingers afterwards.
Like I said in the video then. OI think the back of the tin should say, 5-10% thinning as general painting.. like Isomat does. Clearly I'm no mind reader lol
Thanks for the video, Phill. Use to use Benjamin Moore ceiling paint to a rep got me on AR2. Is AR2 as good🤔🤔 It's a close call . All i would sa is have a word with the BM rep and try the ceiling paint. You could put it on with a yard broom and still get a lovely finish.
I switched to this when it first came out and haven’t looked back. I haven’t had any of the issues you experienced here. I’ve actually found it to dry out nice and level. But I do use medium pile microfibre rollers. I do agreed on the paint transfer when wiping down though. It’s definitely not the class 2 scrub as described. But not as bad as the contract matts. Hopefully it’s something they can sort out when they no doubt redo the formula.
the wipe down for me makes it a no, the thinning of the paint and chance of roller is do able... coming off if wallpapering isn't acceptable for me on a domestic job though.
Depending on customer budget. Either isomat ceiling or AR2. The AF1 price point and also being handy to collect from brewers. Just made me start keeping it as stock.
Hi Phil... I agree with the comments about the roller sleeve being the main problem, Also you say you used a blow heater so it probably has dried to quickly not allowing the paint to pull back and level out a bit.... I've been using it and I'm impressed especially as its a class 2 .. I used to think I need to put on a heavy coat for coverage/opacity and use a longish pile roller for coverage & speed but I found it always left the horrible stippled finish also. "Unless I kept back rolling over it to take the stipple off which defeats the object" ... so I tried/tested and found that a thinner coat has multiple benefits... it dries faster (don't always need for a heater so it levels better) , hence dries smoother ...and believe it of not Ive actually found it covers better because the mottling finish is tighter if that makes sense? ..so it less patchy and see through... plus I can roll it again sooner due to drying faster naturally... or I speed up drying when I have to with a large fan "no heat" just air movement. P.s just a thought - If it's 3 coats why do 3 heavy coats when 3 thin and fast will do the same but better... we all do things different but that's what Ive found works better for me 😬
@@ProfessionalPainterDecorator Hi Phil, to be honest i couldn't see that it did from the video but obviously it did otherwise you wouldn't have said it did...but I'm sure your talking only traces of paint because its nothing like a contract paint that literally comes of back to the original colour... I basically tried it because I had been using crown extra matt low reflective and that's also way better than contract matt ... but I wanted something more durable with a low sheen ... I thought it was really good when I deliberatly test wiped it first time I used it... Simply put its not a class 1 paint and also doesn't cost the price of a class 1 paint so considering its a class 2 its really good for the class it sits in. Regarding what does a class 2 mean.. Ive leant a fair bit from you mostly regarding spraying as I'm fairly new to that so I value your expertise ... this is just my findings and how I do this particular thing differently .. Give it a go.. you may be surprised. .. Because I feel It's definitely the type of roller sleeve used that makes a huge difference to begin with, followed by the application.. Ive found and seen many times that laying it on heavy makes the roller skid leaving horrible streaky lines if you don't back roll over and over it to remove the excess paint .. which then means you may as well of used a shorter pile roller to begin with. Also going over a durable paint to begin with it would of spread for miles so to speak... that's why it didn't cover even going on heavy.. If it went over say a porous contract type paint or something like that it wouldn't spread far but would have covered fantastically because contract is like a sponge. Its these variables that often get overlooked that cause the problem and not always the paint. ohh and p.p.s. in fairness Ive found no white paint normally covers a colour in 2 coats when rolling and especially over a durable finish because the paint doesn't suck into it like it does over dry porous paint like cheap matt contact type paints do.
Haha😂.. I just meant I'm not putting you down like some do.. Did you know that Ar2 is also a class 2 wet scrub rating? so paint comes of when wet wiped just the same on that product as well... So why is it not a no on that as well then?🤔🤣

Opacity on the Isomat ceiling paint has reduced my use of it, spraying is fine, but as you say too, over filler or marks, it's not got the body for two coats

@kevinjackson6387 not used & tbh don't need to as the CROWN 10L matt is under £40 & there is no flashing whatsoever & just a completely flat matt finish which you can touch up in middle & it won't notice or flash, I'm finding the matt whites look translucent today especially over a mist coat but is drying solid, CROWN is not that thick but as i just said is drying solid so get it on & leave it, never use to be like this so don't know if formula has changed, environmentally friendly etc but paint was definitely thicker going back 80's 90's ?
@bigdude8470 not sure how mate as low reflective, or was it just standard crown matt ? but like as with all paint you get it on & leave it, the worst thing to do is roll back over once drying as it just pulls it off, I'm baffled as to why ?

Have to disagree with you regarding wiping, I papered up to it on coving no problem when I used it the other week, and it's a class 2 scrub which would back that up, definitely nothing like a contract. Quick key and x2 over a silk ceiling looked sound Does splatter like crazy even unthinned, but that roller sleeve is definitely responsible for your problems no doubt. @ProfessionalPainterDecorator I was driving mate lol so couldn't really see how bad it was for you. But just adding my own findings, didn't wipe off for me at all and that was over lightly keyed silk of all things so have no doubts on it really personally, ,especially coupled with it being a class 2 it shouldn't be wiping anything off at all (and hasn't for me anyway) I am by no means am saying this is a good product or better than ar2, it's OK. But all your gripes with it can be explained/fixed pretty easily, and it's definitely not a contract matt in slightest, It's acrylic styrene binder in it it's just rebadged wrx super ceiling
I've actually found this quite alright to brush and roll. However, it's an absolute nightmare to spray. You literally have to double filter this like posh coffee, otherwise it's constant tip blockages, much like the Albany smooth masonry paint, which is pretty awful, in my opinion. I won't be spraying this product again.
Thats very low coverage 9sm2 Litre. I pretty impressed with dulux trade vinyl matt it goes for miles 17Sm2 thats almost 2x as much coverage and dries nice and flat 2nd coat just glides on never had much issue with flashing since its been reformulated.
Just used this in my downstairs toilet. Not impressed at all. Brand new tape and jointed house, so to avoid any issues with flashing, poor jointing finish, I went with this. Sanded the ceiling, primed, filled, sanded, filled and sanded again and finally primed. Cut in with a brush and roller and straight away it was tearing and pulling, rolled it out and hoped for the best. Today I got up and looked at it and fuck me, looked horrendous. Every overlap it’s pulled the paint off, and has left the surface of the ceiling with what looks like tapered Edged boards. If it wasn’t a clients house I’d have to re do the whole thing. Luckily it’s my house and i won’t be looking up at it it if I can help it. Nightmare
Too thick on the application, thin it down more. The quantity of paint in the can was probably your clue. High solid content? (High solids = More weight). All the best.
Have you tried the Isomat Ceiling paint? on the can it says to think 5-10% (anyway) maybe a bit more for spraying. Do you think the AF1 should come with an instruction to thin no matter what you go over.. porous, or like me, a non porous surface??
@ProfessionalPainterDecorator Interesting you ask that. I need to check back and find where I read/found this, (I do know it was to do originally when spraying). But it was that Dulux paints are generally sold as a 'concentrate' , meaning they are meant/expected to be thinned down the whole time - and still perform to the quality expected. They are batched concentrated more than necessary. When you think and see about some people are getting fantastic results (both rolling and spraying), when really thinning down (high quality) materials. I will say - often at the expense of another coat though!
@@ProfessionalPainterDecorator On this basis, I tried Crown clean exreme, knowing the product well, thinned to around 20% (a sprayable consistency) and had a go rolling it (medium pile - broken in sleeve). 3 coats over a previously painted set of walls, 80 grit sanded first, brought it to a bang flat 'melamine like' finish. No hint of orange peel or stipple AT ALL. Absolutely immaculate. If you can be arsed with the extra coat. Doing high end classy work where the customers want quality and don't care if there's an extra bit to pay to get it perfect. It's worked well, so I've stuck with it. And that paint lasts well too.

Have you tried the Isomat Ceiling paint? on the can it says to think 5-10% (anyway) maybe a bit more for spraying.
Do you think the AF1 should come with an instruction to thin no matter what you go over.. porous, or like me, a non porous surface??

Interesting you ask that.
@@bobspread everything looks good on a photo. ;)

On this basis, I tried Crown clean exreme, knowing the product well, thinned to around 20% (a sprayable consistency) and had a go rolling it (medium pile - broken in sleeve).
You might laugh but, wickes ultra matt is as good as any for ceilings !
Does it pass the damp sponge test ??
@ yes
I used it as per instuctions....so terrible....I gave the rest away!
Not as good as Tik then?
