I've been playing this game since it came out and literally EVERYTIME I watch one of your videos, I learn something new! Great job!! I never thought of turning off the degrees of freedom in RCS....mind blown.
Great info! Awesome video and i love how in depth you are. This is going the save all my Kerbals so from being lost in space cause i ran out of fuel lol👌😎✌
I learned a lot. I usually just slot four blocks at the top, and four blocks at the bottom and hope for the best. It has worked this far due to the reaction wheels. So thank you for the information, as well as the entertainment. For people that has a large tank at he top section, emptying it might move the centre of mass quite a bit.
Thank you thank you thank you for all your tutorials they have really helped me with KSP even if KSP2 has a boatload of tutorials I will still come by and check yours out
Welp. Spent literal hours last night trying to dock an old station and part of a new upgrade (assembling in parts as it was too wide to fit in my current fairings unless I separated it), and the old station wasn't efficiently built, and was already low on MP. Couldn't get the angles quite right to save myself last night. Doesn't help that for some reason my station was only capable of yaw to the left and pitching down. (A common feature in my ships at some point or another, I'm not sure why). Came and watched the next video, then this one, jumped back into my save file as one particular comment had given me a eureka moment. Translation. Last night I'd been trying to go up and to the left using my regular pitch controls, trying to jump between the LIN/ROT docking modes and normal maneuver mode, and it was frying my nut. You mentioned separate controls for the other 3 degrees of freedom. So I looked at the controls page ingame. All I had to do was hold RB while using the joystick. So I set the targets up on each ship, managed it easily even after my old station decided for whatever reason that it wanted to rotate away from my upgraded docking hub (which is also my first experiment with KAL 1000 - it just turns some lights on and rotates them to face the docking ports to light them up, was very handy in the end). Very long winded, but that is to say, thank you!
Hey. Just wondering how you connected the decoupler above the parachute at 3:26. Nevermind. Figured it out after a bit. Anyone else wondering, right click on the Airstream Protective Shell and enable interstage nodes.
Super useful video. Balancing out around the CoM is not that necessary imo, since as seen here SAS will negate it. If you are 95% there it's fine, since the CoM can shift anyway depending on e.g. how much fuel you have burned in your main tank or other things. What you could do is set half the fuel you would typically have when maneuvering around with RCS in space and balance that point out. This way you should be well balanced at max and min fuel left.
My mum lander has a giant mono tank as I burnt through it so fast with yaw pitch and roll. Turning it of into hoping my lunar lander will save a huge amount of mass!
All of these tutorials are great! Thank you for all of your help with KSP! Quick question: When I do a similar build to this one, the parachute deploys through the separator ring or decoupler. Anyway to have the truss structure removed from the fairing once you deorbit so the chute can deploy with no issue?
Love the educational format of your videos. I'm having some difficulty getting the station into orbit, when I stage the first two boosters away the rocket loses control wildly for some reason. Maybe something's been updated since it's 2 years after you built this.
No, nothing has changed in that way. I just needed to learn to build vessels that are easier to fly for tutorials. Try adding some tailfins to the core booster, or perhaps an extra set of reactions wheels.
@@MikeAben Yeah, I'm pretty fresh so my piloting skills aren't great yet. I think I was dropping them too early, once I made sure to be stable after 10k it was fine. I got the station up to 120k orbit.
Funny update: I'm working on the contract to expand the station. I took the original Kerbin Station and replaced the storage pod with a science lab and eventually got it into orbit, and into close rendezvous with the station for my first ever docking attempt... and I had no RCS. Well, somehow I did it anyway, by getting a 5m rendez and drifting them together while hopping back and forth to aim the docking ports... It made my day, lmao.
From some1 that is really REALLY bad at using the RCS i would strongly recommend to always use 4-way symetry when placing the RCS thruster blocks unless u really know what u are doing. The main reson for that is that u can very clearly se in what direction u are thrusting becouse all 4 of the blocks are 90 degrees from each other. If u use 3-way symetry it always looks like u are thrusting in an angle and cant easily make out in what direction u are thrusting. Even if u have it dialed in odds are that u will mess things up due to the fact that u are most likly moving the camera around alot so left and right moves around from your camera perspective and trying to figuer out in what direction u are thrusting from an already angled thruster block is a nightmare for some1 that dosent already 100% know what they are doing. Having 4-way symetry makes things SO MUTCH easier to se in what direction u are going. Becouse when looking at the thruster blocks u only se clear 90 degree thrusting.
First, thank you for your videos! I'm returning to KSP after not playing for about 5 years, and I wish your videos existed back when I first started playing! I have been learning so much, and you are a fantastic teacher! I decided to use one of your craft files for the first time, and used your Space Station Craft file to start building a space station. Only problem is, I for some reason cannot get that craft into orbit. The craft is either flipping in the atmosphere, or running out of fuel before orbit is achieved. Is it possible the 1.11 update broke this craft file?
It's possible. I've not played enough with 1.11 to be sure. Definitely make sure to remove any kerbals and their gear before launching. Their mass counts now. Don't hesitate to add more fuel or bigger tail fins to the booster if you need to.
It comes up when you click the arrows that are right above it which brings up that whole column of tabs. f(x) is just the regular sorting, but other tabs sort the parts in different ways.
Ugggggg....I CANNOT get my craft to stop spinning no matter what I press. I also can't find that menu to change what rcs does.. I figured out how to rendezvous with my space station fine. But the rcs is NOT DOING WHAT I WANT!! Lol Also if I take stability control off my craft just spins and spins ...I dont know why
For the life of me i cannot dock. Not even mechjeb can dock. I select both docking ports as targets. I select the control from here. But sas never gives me the option to lock on target so i always come in off line.
Look at the science archive in the R&D centre. A lot of science, especially surface science, is biome specific. Going to different biomes allows you to collect more. Within 100 km or so of the KSC there's water, shores, grasslands, highlands, mountains and deserts. Each building of the KSC is also a biome, some more than one. Explore around. Still on Kerbin there's tundra, ice caps, and the north and south polar ice shelfs, and I've not even gotten into the Mun and Minmus yet.
The fact your Lets do the math series hasnt got you more subs makes me feel sad about the state of society as a whole. It also makes me feel smart or at least much less lazy than 99% of KSP players. It also reminds me of how lonely and antisocial i am as a result lol ... Great video's

150 hours into KSP so far, and I still learned a LOT from this video. Thank you!
This series of videos is just insanely good.

Quick saves help as well :) I used to do them all the time when docking. Who am I kidding, I still do.

You bet. The reaction wheels make up for a lot. I just find a lot of blocks on a small vessel gets twitchy when docking.
You're the best KSP teacher in UA-cam, Mike.

This was extremely useful and answered all questions I had about RCS!

HOW?!
Now I get it! Thank you Mike, superb explanation as always!
Exactly what I needed, thanks very much!
really, great tip for rcs torque adjustment. Thanks!
Excellent tutorial!! Hope to see you do KSP 2 tutorials after it gets its performance update.
That's the plan. I don't see the point of a lot of tutorials when things are obviously going to change.
Super useful video.

RCS build aid was the best mod and I still can’t believe it was never made stock
i think this is the most useble picture 11:02
Amazing video! Thanks a lot for teaching us mate
"Department of Redundancy Department" LMAO xD
i didint knew that you could disable the rcs for pich roll and yaw

The chute will deploy with the truss structure there to. It's just an ascetic choice to decouple the docking port.
interstage is a welcome work around to a problem many have, three 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻

BRO
ALL I NEEDED IS HOW TOI GO UP AND DOWN
THANSK,
3:25 How did you do that? How can I enable the green placement points to put decoupler above parachute? Thanks!
There is a fairing under the parachute. Right click on it and toggle on "interstage nodes".

It comes up when you click the arrows that are right above it which brings up that whole column of tabs. f(x) is just the regular sorting, but other tabs sort the parts in different ways.
How do you toggle between symmetries? (2, 3, 4, etc.)
Click on the icon or press 'x'.

I feel like I should have way more science by this point but I've hit a wall and can't figure out how to get more
