  • This video is a more in depth video on how I made my liquid flux and flux paste. Since my most popular video so far is my previous how to make flux paste I decided to do a more informative in depth version for everyone. Just a note, my friend, and that is the tool you are using to handle the jar to and out of the hot water, is backwards. The red end is used to grasp the jar neck, or threaded part. the handle
of the tool is the black insulated flat part, to keep you from grasping hot metal. When you grasp the jar, after reversing the tool, you will lift the jar vertically with the tool facing down. You
will have much more control and safety over the transfer of the jar. I am from a family of canners, that's why I know. 78 years of experience.

Haha I thought the grasp was a little weak. Thank you for the advice sir, I very much appreciate that.

I got on here to say the same thing. I'm 54 years old and as a young boy I would help my mother can fruits and vegetables every summer.
Glad to see you're now using the tool to it's utmost potential.

Thanks for the video & great to see you have a fire extinguisher nearby, especially when heating alcohol,
    BUT
it's not placed in a good location. If anything catches on fire in a pot or frying pan (especially fat or oil) the flames & spitting oil will prevent you reaching through the flames to reach the extinguisher! Attach it to the wall well in front of the stove.

You have the gift of a natural scientist, experimenter and tinkerer like all the greatest inventors. The scientific method comes naturally to you. Enjoy it, some people go their whole life without ever understanding the joy of tinkering.

That Harris flux probably isn't for electronics (its for plumbing)- flux that has ammonium chloride will corrode a circuit board and components. Use only rosin flux on electronics.

If you add a couple drops of glycerin into the process of making the flux it will keep it from smoking so much

Was hoping you would test the douglass fir flux on the wire. Have you tried it? Is the pine superior? I have lots of doug fir, not so much pine around here

I have done the same without cooking it in hot water, i use Gum Rosin with 99,9% alcohol, and you have to wait a day or a half a day and stir occasionally, then you also have your own flux, but i make it more liquid, works easier.

    • @rimmersbryggeri

You can aslo put a close djar in the dish washer. We used to make candy shots that way but the rosin is maybe more solluble in alcohol than boiled sweets.

@@AmigaWolf No but the heat will help dissolve it for flux though. I seem to remember there was something called pine rosin chewing gum back in the days of acorn coffee and pine bark bread though. In the "nordic" countries there is also something called tar pastilles.

Amber chips was cheap, they are not so cheap now, the cheapest i could find was GBP 9,85 (€11,37) for only 100g.
Gum Rosin is a LOT cheaper, and cost GBP 2,55 (€2,94) for 100g, but you also have to pay GBP 10,49 (€12,11) import costs, but also not as cheap as it was, and GBP 10,50 (€12,12) for 1000g (1 kilo), but you still have to pay GBP 10,49 (€12,11) import costs.
